Psy assignment 1
1. There are 2 social settings that I am
going to talk about. The first one is
schemas; the second one is
representative heuristics.
Schema is a mental concept that tells
someone what to expect from situation
and experiences. Information provided
by schemas usually comes from life
experiences. Our brains will
automatically use schemas to make
future encounters with similar situation
easier to navigate. I will provide a
schema that I obtain from the picture.
As I can saw that, he keeps checking on
his phone, maybe he had some
experience that he miss out some
important messages before. So that’s
why he keeps checking on his phone from times to times.
The main concept for representative heuristics is a short-cut for decision making that uses the
past experience to decide. Our brains will actually rely on the past life experiences and
mental representations that looks similar to the new situation and guide our judgement and
decisions. The benefit obtains from making decision via past experience are that we can get
the result much faster, in the other hand; we might also make the wrong decision. From this
picture, he is wearing sportswear, it seems like he is a sporty guy and maybe he is going to or
just finished exercise.
2. My conclusion from above is that, we could not a hundred percent rely on our past
experience, although they are quite useful.
