Michael Clarke has formally trained in hip arthroscopy
and stands out as one of the only surgeons in the
Syracuse area to perform the procedure.
Using a small camera and special surgical instruments,
hip arthroscopy allows surgeons to visualize and correct
certain abnormalities of the hip. Physicians may
recommend the procedure for those patients who have
painful pieces of loose bone or cartilage inside the joint,
as the surgical instruments involved can be effective at
both identifying and removing these structures.

3. Hip Arthroscopy
• Similarly, arthroscopy may be effective for patients with
femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI. This condition causes
overgrowth of bone around the femoral head or hip socket
and is commonly treated by arthroscopic means.
Surgeons may also perform hip arthroscopy for a tear in the
labrum, which is the cartilage that surrounds the hip socket.
Patients with synovitis, or an inflammation of the tissues
around the hip joint, may likewise find the procedure useful.
Damaged tendons due to snapping hip syndrome, or the

arthroscopic surgery for repair, as may some hip joint
infections or abnormalities in the size of the hip socket.
