Spring in Barcelona4 Parque Guell3

  1. 1. Aerial view
  2. 2. Gaudi planned and directed the construction of the park from 1900 to 1914 for Eusebi Güell for a residential park intended for sixty single- family residences. The project, however, was unsuccessful and the park became city property in 1923. Though never fully completed, it still remains one of Gaudi’s most colorful and playful works. While for houses he drew on natural forms, here he shaped nature into colonnades, archways and covered galleries with well- camouflaged artificial structures. It’s a playground for the mind: visual jokes, like columns that simulate palm-tree trunks or rubble-surfaced arches that grow out of the ground. Gaudí was strongly influenced by natural shapes and used them in his work. Park Güell houses also the Gaudí House Museum, where the architect resided between 1906 and 1925. The house, designed by Francesc Berenguer i Mestres (1848 - 1914) and built between 1904 and 1906 was create as the show home for Gaudi’s project for the park Güell residential development Carob viaduct Museum viaduct Planter’s viaduct The Nature square
  3. 3. Gaudí House Museum
  4. 4. Currently, the house features a collection of furniture and objects designed by Gaudí
  5. 5. Chimney lined with trencadís
  6. 6. Door of the lower house of the Casa Milà Entrance gate - detail
  7. 7. The original furniture on display inside comes from the Casa Calvet, the Casa Batlló and the crypt of the Colònia Güell and gives us a glimpse into the way the architect's designs evolved
  8. 8. Gaudí's creativity and ability to innovate can also be seen in the objects on display in the garden, including the wrought iron railings from the Casa Vicens and the Casa Milà Fragment of gate of the Casa Vicens
  9. 9. Tickets for the Gaudí house museum can be purchased separately at the house entrance itself
  10. 10. Rosary pathway crosses the park from east to West and is one of Park Güell most important pathBird nests built in the walls
  11. 11. Allamanda evergreen climbing vine
  12. 12. Rosary pathway and the Nature square
  13. 13. Rosary pathway, stone palm trees and bougainvillea
  14. 14. Rosary pathway
  15. 15. The first person to buy a plot in the Park, in 1902, was a friend of Güell, lawyer Martí Trias i Domènech, who commissioned architect Juli Batllevell with building his villa
  16. 16. Roadways around the park to service the intended houses were designed by Gaudí as structures jutting out from the steep hillside or running on viaducts, with separate footpaths in arcades formed under these structures. This minimized the intrusion of the roads, and Gaudí designed them using local stone in a way that integrates them closely into the landscape. His structures echo natural forms, with columns like tree trunks supporting branching vaulting under the roadway, and the curves of vaulting and alignment of sloping columns designed in a similar way to his Church of Colònia Güell so that the inverted catenary arch shapes form perfect compression structures
  17. 17. Gaudí created viaducts around the park, wide enough to pass the carriages. Provided with an arcaded gallery and located behind the Casa Güell, the Washerwoman portico (Carob's viaduct) also carries out the function of an earth retaining wall
  18. 18. The retaining wall that supports the path that traverses the entire Park Güell horizontally takes the form of a portico with the profile of a great wave held aloft by sloping columns. It is popularly known as the Pòrtic de la Bugadera (Portico of Washerwoman) because of the sculpture on one of the columns
  19. 19. So called because of the rock statue of a washerwoman at one end, the Washerwoman portico
  20. 20. Bird nests built in the walls
  21. 21. Many architects have made further studies of this viaduct considering that it has a perfect shape, all the weight is perfectly shared in the column due to the structure that was made
  22. 22. The Carob's viaduct starts in one side of the Nature square and goes around the school (Casa Güell). The style of this viaduct is baroque with shaped wave
  23. 23. Casa Larrand (Eusebi Güell lived there until his death). The house became a municipal public school in 1931
  24. 24. Platanushispanica
  25. 25. The park supports a wide variety of wildlife, notably several of the non-native species of parrot found in the Barcelona area
  26. 26. The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), also known as the Quaker parrot
  27. 27. The carob (Ceratonia siliqua)
  28. 28. The carob (Ceratonia siliqua)
  29. 29. Planter’s viaduct – aerial view
  30. 30. The Magic Viaducts are an important part of the Park, often described as the best symbols of the nature throughout the whole park. These paths are around 3km long, and are the best solution to overcome the topography and connect the various parts of the park. The Viaducts were designed in different styles. This one, the Planter's viaduct, goes around all the park from the west to the east. The style of this viaduct is Romanesque
  31. 31. All of Park Güell is open and freely accessible to Barcelona residents, but since 2013, entrance to part of the monumental area has been restricted, to avoid overcrowding by tourists
  32. 32. The restriction limits the maximum number of people allowed inside to 800 visitors per hour, and requires an entrance ticket to get in
