Santa Maria de Belém, or just Belém is a parish of Lisbon, located 6 km west of the present city centre and 2 km west of Ponte 25 de Abril (25 April Bridge). Its name is derived from the Portuguese for Bethlehem. Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower, Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries), a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, celebrating the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Portugal Lisboa24, Belem3

  1. 1. Santa Maria de Belém, or just Belém is a parish of Lisbon, Portugal, located 6 km west of the present city centre and 2 km west of Ponte 25 de Abril (25 April Bridge). Its name is derived from the Portuguese for Bethlehem
  2. 2. View of the Praça do Império, and, in front, the Jerónimos. The square commemorates the Portuguese Empire and was built for the Exhibition of the Portuguese World in 1940
  3. 3. The Hieronymites Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), located in the Belém district of Lisbon is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style (Portuguese late-Gothic). In 1983, it was classified by the UNESCO, with nearby Belém Tower, as a World Heritage Site
  4. 4. The mythical Sea- Horse or Hippocampus (“horselike sea- monster”; from Greek hippos, meaning “horse,” and kampos, meaning “sea- monster”) is an equine aquatic beast in classical Greco- Roman mythology. In Roman lore, the Hippocampus was said to be the fastest creature in the ocean. It is thus the favorite steed of Poseidon (Neptune), King of the Sea, and a team of them draw his chariot
  5. 5. The Maritime Museum of Lisbon opened in 1963. It is located in the west wing of the Jeronimos Monastery, being one of the most visited museums in Portugal
  6. 6. The 330-seat Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium in Belém, adjacent to the Maritime Museum started functioning in 1965
  7. 7. Paineira rosa (Ceiba speciosa) Considered among the very beautiful trees of the world, the silk floss tree is a species of deciduous tree native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South America. Common name: Floss-silk Tree, Mexican Silk Cotton, Paineira-rosa, Kapok, Silk-floss tree
  8. 8. Church of Santa Maria of Belem

  12. 12.  Bougainvillea is a tropical, shrub-like vine that bursts forth with colorful flowers for 11 months of the year
  13. 13. Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower. Torre de Belém was built as a fortified lighthouse, late in the reign of Dom Manuel (1515–1520), to guard the entrance to the port. It stood on a little island in right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water. The tower composed of a bastion and the 30 m four storey tower is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles

  15. 15. Museu de Arte Popular em Belém
  16. 16. Al-Ishaq Yachting and Portugália (the most famous beer hall in Portugal)
  17. 17. Museu de Arte Popular em Belém
  18. 18. Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497
  19. 19. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient, Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries
  20. 20. The South African government was responsible for gifting the construction of the square in front of the monument: the 50- metre-diameter Rosa- dos-Ventos (compass rose) was executed using different types of marble. Designed by the architect Cristino da Silva, it includes a Mappa mundi that is 14 metres wide, showing the routes of Portuguese carracks and caravels during the Age of Discovery
  21. 21. The top of the monument (reached via an elevator or stairs) offers views of the Tagus river, the Belém neighborhood and its many attractions, including the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which date from the Age of Discovery
  22. 22. Portuguese pavement (calçada portuguesa)
  23. 23. Jacaranda
  24. 24. The 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is a suspension bridge inaugurated 1966 (a train platform was added in 1999) often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA (constructed by the same company) With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 23rd largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar). The name "25 de Abril" commemorates the Carnation Revolution
  25. 25. You can get a nice aerial view of the city by traveling across the bridge. You can catch a southbound train in several stations, such as Oriente, Entrecampos or Sete Rios, and travel towards Pragal. The ticket costs only €1.80.
