Synopsis:Timeline
My journey to PCN coordinator began my freshman year. I
joined Akbayan and became part of Luzonia Family. In the spring
I decided to try out for an acting role in the 25th PCN where I
was casted as the fairy godfather Dr. Jose Rizal. From there I
fell in love with PCN. I ran for Public Relations Officer for the
following school year and offered to help with the 26th PCN. That
experience inspired me so much to run for PCN Coordinator for
the 27th. So here I am today and I couldn’t be more excited to
share this story with you.
- Mia Richelle Guevarra
The story you’re about to witness is fictional. It was written as
if it could have happened and all the characters are a figment
of my imagination. The inspiration came from a workshop with
Professor Kim Komenich. He witnessed the EDSA Revolution first
hand taking Pulitzer Prize winning photos.
This story is not to be confused with the take down of Marcos. My
intentions are not to highlight any side to be better than another.
This story is focused on Maria and Ricardo and their laban to be
together during an iconic time in Philippine history.
Laban in Tagalog means fight. Maria and Ricardo’s story begins
a little before the 4 day EDSA Revolution in the Philippines, but
carries on into it. Their families bring them into the revolution,
yet separating one another by their opposing sides. Maria’s
family supports Aquino while Ricardo’s family supports Marcos.
However, their involvement with the revolution doesn’t keep
them apart; it brings them closer together. During a time where
tomorrow is never promised they fight day by day for peace,
freedom, and most importantly their love--- proving that with the
right kind of fight or laban, tomorrow is guaranteed.
4. Coordinator's AddressMabuhay! Welcome to Akbayan SJSU’s 27th
Annual Pilipino
Culture Night: Laban!
I would like to thank you all for taking the time to watch our
production that we are excited to present to you tonight. Thank
you to all the parents, families, and friends who have supported
these individuals during this journey of preparation. Thank
you to each Akbayan General Member, on and off stage, for all
of your hard work and commitment to our organization - we
would be nothing without you!
Akbayan is the Pilipino American Organization at San Jose
State and is recognized as one of the largest groups on campus
with 400+ general members this academic school year. We
provide an ample amount of events and programs that are
always rooted in our three pillars: Cultural, Community,
and Social. This past year, Akbayan has achieved many
accomplishments, and tonight we will celebrate one of our
most notable: Pilipino Cultural Night. PCN is one of my favorite
times of the year to see our general members working together
to accomplish one goal: to learn about our Pilipino culture
and share it with the community on stage! Seeing hundreds of
students continue this tradition ensures me that our ancestors
and our history will endure for years to come.
To Coreazon and Cast of Laban
Congratulations!! I am so proud of all of you, and I am
blessed to have seen you all grow throughout the semester of
preparation. I admire everyone’s willingness to step out of their
comfort zone and try something new, since I know many of
you are first time performers/dancers/actors. You have truly
showed me confidence in your skills and I can assure you that
you have inspired me and will inspire more tonight! To MiaMia,
you have put in HELLA time and heart into this show over the
past year, and now we will all be able to showcase with family and friends what we have been working on. I am lucky to say that I
was by your side for the entire ride. I know all of you have been anticipating this moment, so enjoy it and leave your heart on stage
for our audience to see!
To The 38th element
I love you all! This year has been a journey of ups and downs. We became a team, a force to be reckoned with, we were able to create
and ignite the possibilities for hundreds of general members. I couldn’t have imagined this year with anyone else but you. I loved
this entire experience serving on cabinet with you and as your president. I am in complete admiration of all of our accomplishments.
You truly have become another family to me. <3
To My Family
Thank you Mommy, Daddy and Eilene for your patience and love this entire year. You are my backbone and everything I do is for
you. You have been completely accepting and supportive of my decisions throughout my college career and I cannot thank you
enough. Thank you to all of my relatives who have supported me at every PCN I have participated in, and tonight I dedicate every
dance move and smile to my beloved Nanay Natividad. I miss you every day! To my Legends, I love you all to pieces. To my Adings
Christeven, Rico, Audrey, Grand Adings Kwiteen, AJ, Kaleo, and Great Grand Adings Jacob and Krista, you are my pride and joy. Keep
doin’ you, work hard, stay humble and never stop smiling. “Let all that you do be done with passion.”
Without further adieu, sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
Love always, Ann Gail Dela Cruz

Good evening and welcome to LABAN: Akbayan’s 27th Annual
Pilipino Cultural Night! Thank you for taking the time to be
here tonight to support our organization and our cast.
Our unique cast of 170 is mainly composed of students who
have never done PCN before. These past couple of months
we’ve conquered many road bumps. In our own way, the
process to get here was a laban or fight. Nevertheless, we
welcome you tonight to a show that we’ve put our blood, sweat
and tears into and I could not be any more proud of this cast.
The year of preparation could not be possible if it weren’t for the
people who’ve helped to get us here today. First off, God: You’re
an amazing being and I thank you for giving me the strength
and the push I needed to get here. Moreover, thank you for all
the people you’ve blessed me with.
To the cast of PCN 2015, each and every one of you has made
this show its own. I am proud of you all and I’m thankful to
be able to lead you all through this journey. Thank you for
everything and for being a part of this show.
To Coreazon, thank you for everything. A coordinator is only
as strong as her core. Given that half of you are new to this,
I thank you for making this show different. Thank you for
your creativity, dedication and hard work. From ideas to the
show you all have been my rocks. I know you all have put
your ‘corazons’ into what we’ve created and trust it will show
tonight. We did it!
To Jerico, I am truly blessed to have you as an ading and I
admire everything you’ve done for the show. This program and
the flyer could never be what it is without your creative mind.
I know how much work you put into this and I can never thank
you enough.
To Lorraine, Aiko, and Kevin Truong, Thank you for leading
completely new aspects to PCN and making them impeccable.
To Leslie, Krislynn, Louie, Christeven, Allison, Junn, & Edgar, thank you for being so willing to take on the challenge of joining my
core; especially as newbies. You all have brought something fresh to PCN and the show could not be the same without each of you.
To Meghan and Charlene, thank you two for working so hard to find us practice space. This year was the most challenging yet and
without ya’ll who knows where we’d be.
To Ann, thank you for being a mentor and always being an inspiration as a leader in the Pilipino community. Thank you for being
like my PCN maiden of honor <3 lulz
To the 38th Element, what a year huh? Thank you all for always being so willing to lend a hand. I am eternally grateful for ever
working with such amazing and hard working individuals. I know we’re not done yet but holy crap I’m soooo proud of us.
To #TheApartment, thank you for dealing with me at the end of the day and being thee very best room mates a girl could ever ask
for. I’m sorry for all the things I forget to bring and thank you for always being the ones to bring them. Don’t worry guys; the Tinikling
sticks will be out of the boys’ room soon! Love you!
To Dean, thank you for keeping me sane and inspiring me whether it is through music, art or words. “You’re a positive motivating
force within my life.” Thank you always being so supportive and dealing with the organized mess that I am.
To Kuya JJ, thank you for never failing to be available or to help from USC. Thank you for the countless drafts and edits and emails
and meetings this past year over the script. As much as I’m doing this for my parents, I’m also doing this for you. Thank you for
never giving up on me. Thank you for showing me the magic I could bring to Akbayan and the show. Finally, thank you for inspiring
me to do PCN. I would never be here if it weren’t for you. I hope I earn my Luzonia wings and can make you proud tonight P.S. Sorry
for not saying you were my favorite coordinator during speeches.
To my parents Maria and Ricardo, thank you for being the inspirations in my life. Thank you for being supportive of everything
that I do and loving me no less regardless of the mistakes I make. Thank you for pushing me and being encouraging of my passions
during this planning process. I’m sorry for the time I spent away from home, but I hope that watching everything come to life
tonight will make up for it. I dedicate this show to you both and I only wish to make you proud. I love you <3
Without further adieu, the show you’re about to witness is greater than the average, it’s magic. From an idea to Akbayan’s 27th
Annual Pilipino Cultural Night, I present to you, Laban. Enjoy the show!

Timawa, meaning “forsaken lover,” is a
courtship dance. The story tells of a man

acquaintances at a social gathering. During
their meeting, they discover that they
both share the same misfortune of being
abandoned lovers. They turn to each other for
sympathy and comfort.

A very lively and gay dance. During the old days, this dance was a favorite in

Dugso, a sacrifice dance ritual from
the Higaonon of Bukidnon province in
Mindanao, overlaps as a thanksgiving of
a good harvest, healing of the sick, and the
overall well-being of the commuity. A fire
is lit for the dance in belief that the smoke
will carry these offerings to the gods. The
dance also dispels evil spirits while assuring
nourishment, victory from a battle, and the
blessing of a newly opened field. The evil
spirits are dispelled through the noise made
from the bells around each dancer’s ankles.
These bells are regarded as the best music to
the spirits’ ears.

The Maglanka (meaning “to dance”) teaches young girls the correct skills for
posturing, hand movements, and placements, in which mimics the motions
of birds in flight, branches swaying in the air and fishes swimming. These
movements act as the foundation for learning more elaborate Tausug dances.
The dancers perform all motions of the dance without leaving the scarf as
a way to challenge themselves. In this modern verison, the scarf is simply a

The Kalingga borrowed the beautiful word
ragragsakan from the Ilocano, which means
“merriment.” The two biggest occasions for
a ragragsakan in a Kalinga village are for
the homecoming of successful head takers
and the culmination of peace-pact between
warring tribes. In this dance, Kalinga maidens
balance labba baskets on their heads, wave
colorful tribal blankets, and sing short
salidumay songs as they snake through the
terrace dikes and skip through breaks in the
path. This dance portrays the walk of the
industrious Kalingga women, carrying water
pots on their heads and wearing the colorful
hand-woven “blankets of life” around their
necks. Their walk imitates the climb up the
Rice Terraces in the Mountain Provinces of
the Philippines.

In rural gatherings, this dance offers much merriment and fun. Gayong is
a pet name for Leodegario. According to the legend and to the words of the
song, Gayong and Masiong (pet name for Dalmacio) once attended a feast
commemorating the death of a townsman. While eating, Masiong choked on
a piece of adobo so he called “Gayong! Gayong!” asking for help to dislodge
the adobo from his throat. In this dance, Masiong’s liking for feasts and the
consequence of his voracity are held up to playful ridicule.

Karatong has male dancers using a karatong or a bamboo tube, about a yard
lon, tied horizontally below the waist and struck by two sticks to tap the rhythm
of the dance. Female dancers collect flowers from the mango tree. The annual
parade of San Agustine includes the celebration of blossoming mango trees
that grow abundantly on the island of Cuyo, the former capital of the Palawan
province. Starting at the church patio and ending at the town plaza, groups of
ladies sway their colorful “bunga manga,” which are meant to represent the
flowers of the mango tree while the men strike lively, syncopated beats with
