Brad Peniston launched the #ScrantonMovieTitles and #ScrantonMovieNames hashtags on Twitter, which went viral overnight on November 4, 2011. Several members of the NEPA Twitter community participated by tweeting movie titles set in Scranton using the hashtags. The document then provides background on hashtags and showcases some of the creative titles people tweeted, attributed to different Twitter users.

- If you are not familiar with Twitter, you may ask yourself “what is a hashtag”?Basically, a hashtag is a keyword prefaced with the pound sign/tic tac toe board symbol on your keyboard, is used to mark words or topics in a Tweet that may interest you.
- What if major motion pictures were based in Scranton?The next several slides will explore my artistic/geeky take on how some of the movie posters would look if this was the case, also on each slide, I will give credit back to the original tweeter.
- Our first slide is “A Fish Called Towanda” which my husband woke up out of a dead sleep to tell me. In the picture here, you can see The Fish and a photo of downtown Towanda that I stole from Wikipedia. I’ve got to be honest and say I have never seen this movie before, I have no idea what it is about!
- Next up, we have “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic The Sound of Moosic”. I think this movie poster would be more realistic if Julie Andrews were dancing in front of the Shoppes at Montage. Contributors are Kernsie & Bgfulton on Twitter…they actually both had the same idea…great minds think alike!
- Look out ladies and gentlemen. It’s the feel good film of the decade!SlumdogMiddleswarth. I ask you, how can you NOT give eating an entire bag of BBQ Middleswarth potato chips in one sitting 5 stars? Contributor is me once again!
- Some of our more famous NEPA “celebrities” started tweeting with the hashtag and Rock107 mentioned it on the air. Hoover107, tweeted “Sweet Valley Girl”…which is where I’m from, here’s my crappy attempt at photoshopping myself next to Nick Cage. Like for sure.
- Here we have….BACK MOUNTAIN TO THE FUTURE. Somedays I wish I had a delorean to get through the traffic around the rock cut at rush hour. Contributor is Dave DiRenzo from the Rock 107 Morning Show.
- Here’s another one I came up with, “Dial M for Mehalshick”. Hazleton native, Andy Mehalshick, is NEPA’s crime watch dog….he needs your tips for the next big news story. Now you know how to reach him, he’s only a letter away.
- Phil Yacuboski is a former reporter for the now defunct WYOU-TV 22 news. He got in on the tweeting action and contributed “Thank Championship Polka”. You can’t have a summer bazaar in NEPA without an accordian and some brass horns present
- Staying on the summer church bazaar thought for a moment…you can’t attend one without sampling some piergois. As you can see from the map, we are the pierogi capital of the US. Don’t hide pierogies from me, I can sniff them out a mile away!. Crouching Tiger Hidden Pierogi was one of my tweets.
- PechaKucha Night founder BradPeniston had several good contributions to this hashtag, one of them being “Minooka-sablanca”. I have never seen this movie, but I did review the movie quotes online. “Here’s looking at you, heyna?” “Play it once, Snedeker. For old times’ sake.”
- TweeterRadioshell contributed “Forrest City Gump”, which I’m told is on tonight on TBS. “Momma always said, Life was like a box of Gertrude Hawk, you never know what you’re gonna get”.
- Because no one can ever get enough chocolate, I dedicated two slides to talk about Gertrude Hawk. This one is Gertrude Hawk Down (a play on Black Hawk Down). Leave no chocolate behind. EAT EVERY SINGLE DELICIOUS ONE! Contributor is me again.
- Several people tweeted with their take on the “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” flick. I decided to pick the one “Fear and Loathing on Interstate 81” for this presentation. Who hasn’t feared and loathed driving on 81 during rush hour and in the winter? Welcome to bat country!
- Fellow NEPA Blogger and presenter Mandy Boyle had a several good contributions, but I ‘m only so good at manipulating photos, so I picked an easy one. “Dude Where’s My Tercel?” Just what floor you parked it on in the Boscov’s parkade, and you won’t have any trouble.
- Tweeter ChrissyK20 wanted to memorialize the now defunct Rocky Glen Amusement park. I have very fond memories of going to this park with my family. So here we have the Rocky Glen Horror Picture show. How’s that for a timewarp? Pretty scary if you ask me.
- For the few days that this hashtag became popular, it was all I could think of. As you can see I have several movie titles that I tweeted about. Here, Johnny Cash walks the Mine, right into a ring of fire perhaps into Centralia.
