Driven by the recent resurgence of 3D cinema, depth cameras and stereoscopic displays are becoming commonplace in the consumer market. Introduced last October, Microsoft Kinect has already fostered gesture-based interaction for applications well beyond the intended Xbox 360 platform. Similarly, consumer electronics manufacturers have begun selling stereoscopic displays and inexpensive stereoscopic cameras. Most commercial 3D displays continue to require cumbersome eyewear, but inexpensive, glasses-free 3D displays are imminent with the release of the Nintendo 3DS. At SIGGRAPH 2010, the Build Your Own 3D Display course demonstrated how to construct both LCD shutter glasses and glasses-free lenticular screens, providing Matlab-based code for batch encoding of 3D imagery. This follow-up course focuses more narrowly on glasses-free displays, describing in greater detail the practical aspects of real-time, OpenGL-based encoding for such multi-view, spatially multiplexed displays. The course reviews historical and perceptual aspects, emphasizing the goal of achieving disparity, motion parallax, accommodation, and convergence cues without glasses. It summarizes state-of-the-art methods and areas of active research. And it provides a step-by-step tutorial on how to construct a lenticular display. The course concludes with an extended question-and-answer session, during which prototype hardware is available for inspection.

Driven by the recent resurgence of 3D cinema, depth cameras and stereoscopic displays are becoming commonplace in the consumer market. Introduced last October, Microsoft Kinect has already fostered gesture-based interaction for applications well beyond the intended Xbox 360 platform. Similarly, consumer electronics manufacturers have begun selling stereoscopic displays and inexpensive stereoscopic cameras. Most commercial 3D displays continue to require cumbersome eyewear, but inexpensive, glasses-free 3D displays are imminent with the release of the Nintendo 3DS. Soon gi Park (LetinAR): PinMR: Novel Optical Solution for AR Glasses LetinAR is a Seoul-based startup developing see-through optical systems for wearable augmented reality devices. Based on our unique pin mirror technology which has quite different approaches from any other existing combiner optics, LetinAR has demonstrated ultrawide field-of-view more than 80 degrees with 8K high resolution. LetinAR also presented a form-factor-oriented glasses prototype device having the same appearance of normal glasses. In this presentation, we introduce a pin mirror technology and its benefits and contributions to wearable AR hardware including high image quality without any degradation, visual comfort supporting correct vergence and accommodation, wide field-of-view providing immersive experience as well as cost effective manufacturing process. Recently, various devices for three-dimensional (3-D) effect have been developed. For producing 3-D effect of the scene or the region of interest (ROI), disparity should be accurately estimated. People watching 3-D video feel visual fatigue if magnitude of parallax for the ROI is excessively large because a convergence point is not accurately put on the ROI. For producing 3-D effect, a 3-D formatter overlaps left and right images by shifting horizontally the right image by the estimated disparity of the ROI. In this paper, an adaptive disparity estimation algorithm for auto convergence of the ROI in a video is proposed using the first-order Taylor series expansion of disparity and adaptive disparity search range prediction in a stereoscopic video. First, a stereo video that consists of a number of pairs of left and right images is captured in parallel stereo camera configuration. A window in each frame is selected within the ROI and tracked. Then, for automatically adjusting a convergence point on the ROI, two steps are needed with the previously estimated disparities. The first-order Taylor series expansion is used to approximate disparity of the current frame of a video. Then, a moving average filter is used to adaptively determine disparity search range in similarity measure computation. Subjective evaluation such as visual fatigue, comfort, and 3-D effect of the proposed algorithm and existing algorithms is performed. Experimental results with four test videos and subjective evaluation show that the proposed algorithm gives 3-D effect with visual comfort.

Heliodisplay is a technology used for displaying images in mid air. Invented by Chad Dyner. In the heliodisplay, a projector focuses the image onto a layer of mist in mid-air, resulting in a two-dimensional display that appears to float. Hi-Tech projector that display pictures in the air. An interactive free space display developed by IO2 technologies. It is a planar display i.e. 2D not 3D. Works as a free space touch screen when connected to PC. Eco-friendly , low power consuming and various image and video formats. The device converts the imaging properties of the air so that the air is taken in, converted instantaneously, and then re-ejected out. The system thus creates a dynamic, non solid particle cloud by ejecting atomized condensate present in the surrounding air. Now the projector projects the given input on the found invisible screen.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
