In the UK alone, over 2,000 young
people take their own lives every
year.




Some of them are students.
We cannot stop suicide from occurring; it has
always been part of our society.




But there is sufficient evidence that prevention
and intervention can go a long way in helping
somebody STOP from making the decision to
take that irreversible final step.
   Students often feel afraid to tell anybody about their
    suicidal feelings for fear of being told they are being over-
    dramatic or because they are scared they will be forced to
    relinquish control and placed under monitoring conditions
    to stop them from harming themselves.




WE NEED TO…




      TACKLE THIS ISSUE ACROSS UNIVERSITY
     CAMPUSES IN A STUDENT-FRIENDLY WAY.
AIMS: 1)To initiate self-worth and higher levels of self-
esteem we want to ask students to think of the reasons
why they are here and what benefits they bring to this
world that nobody else can.


                                            1) What do you get
      Keep it
                                            out of bed for? Is it
      student-
                                            having lunch with
      friendly; ask
                                            your friends, going
      questions
                                            out at night, your
      like:
                                            course, your career
                                            aspirations?




  ASK students what they do that makes them
  important to other people; ask them for specific
  examples: eg ‘I always make my friend Kate laugh
  again when she falls out with her boyfriend.
Record students answers to
these questions on camera,
on ‘keep calm and love life’
notepaper, post and
photograph notepaper
around campuses, post to
facebook and twitter…

ENCOURAGE A MENTAL HEALTH
 PROFESSIONAL FROM EACH UNIVERSITY
 TO COME IN AND TALK TO STUDENTS

 SOMEBODY WHO IS SUICIDAL: CHANCE TO
 DISCUSS SUICIDE AND ITS IMPACT ON

4. FIND SOMEWHERE THAT PRINTS T-SHIRTS.

5. FIND SOMEWHERE TO PRINT POSTERS.

6. ASK YOUR UNION AND WELFARE OFFICER IF
   THERE IS ANY MONEY AVAILABLE TO LAUNCH
   THIS CAMPAIGN (we can ask them afterwards if
   they seem hesitant. )

ENCOURAGE A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL FROM EACH UNIVERSITY TO COME IN AND TALK TO STUDENTS ABOUT HOW THEY COULD SUPPORT SOMEBODY WHO IS SUICIDAL: CHANCE TO DISCUSS SUICIDE AND ITS IMPACT ON OTHERS ENCOURAGE VOLUNTEERS TO WRITE TO THEIR STUDENT NEWSPAPER AND LOCAL NEWSPAPER ABOUT WHEN THE PROJECT IS RUNNING AND COLLECT STATISITICS ABOUT SUICIDE AT THEIR UNIVERSITY
  • 8. INGREDIENTS: •7 VOLUNTEERS •A CAMCORDER/SOMETHING TO RECORD VIDEO RESPONSES WITH •T-SHIRTS PRINTED (we will email you the design and send you some money) •KEEP CALM AND LOVE LIFE NOTEPAPER. (posted to you) •PENS •POSTERS (we will email you a design). •LOTS OF ENERGY AND ENTHUSIAM!!!!!!!
  • 9. THINGS TO START WITH 1. LOOK THROUGH THE PROJECT BRIEF. 2. GET A GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS TOGETHER. 3. HAVE A CHAT. 4. FIND SOMEWHERE THAT PRINTS T-SHIRTS. 5. FIND SOMEWHERE TO PRINT POSTERS. 6. ASK YOUR UNION AND WELFARE OFFICER IF THERE IS ANY MONEY AVAILABLE TO LAUNCH THIS CAMPAIGN (we can ask them afterwards if they seem hesitant. ) 7. PLAN A WEEK TO DO IT.
