22 jump street movie trailer analysis
1. Movie release date: June 4th 2014
Genre: Comedy/action/adventure
Director: Chris Miller, Phil Lord
Audience:
The age rating for 22 jump street is a 15 and this age rating is well
suited for the type of film that it is. 22 Jump street includes a lot so
swearing and scenes in which are not suitable for ages under 15. The
violent scene and language used in the film is best suited for 15 year
olds as this would not disturb this age or above. Some of the language
used within the movie is suited for this age as younger ages would not
understand the language used.
Genre:
The genre of this movie trailer is known as an
action/ adventure aswell as a comedy. The content
of the film suits the genre as certain scenes of the
film make the audience laugh. The adventure
element also suits the genre as they are on a
mission in the story line.
2. Mise-En-Scene:
Lighting- The lighting in the trailer is very bright and the scenes are
mostly shot in the sun or in a bright room. The bright lightning shows
that it is a happy film and the film shows off how there is a lot of fun
involved.
Props- The props used in the film are mainly props such alcohol,
drugs and sunglasses. The use of alcohol and drugs link to the
audience as the film is aimed at teenagers and above and in society,
teenagers are stereotyped as the type characters to be taking drugs at
that age. The use of sunglasses relate to the bright lighting showing a
positive atmosphere. The beach party clip also links to the audience.
There are also guns which are used as a prop. This prop shows the
audience what the characters job. Although guns are seen as
dangerous weapons, in the trailer they are shown to be cool and they
are not shown as a threat. The use of the gun is very laid back, seeing
as the two characters are meant to be cops.
Actors- The actors used in the film are very young and this relates
and reminds the audience who the film is aimed towards.
Costume- The costumes that the people in the movie trailer are
wearing are all brightly coloured. The brightly coloured clothing relates
to the atmosphere of the film but also links to the age of the
characters in the film. For the women who are in the film, there is also
very little clothing on them and this links to the audience, attracting
the male population and engaging them to watch the film.
3. Editing:
At the beginning of the trailer there are a few clips
that quickly jump to each other as they are filmed
within the same room and for the same scene just
from different angles. These quick jumps from each
angle helps with the flow of this section of the trailer
and it helps to introduce the story line and the genre
of the film. It also goes with the pace of the music at
the beginning as the music played is very slow and
the clip follows through playing slowly.
The music then changes to a more upbeat song and
a song which links to the audience. The jumps from
clip to clip get faster at this point and link to the
song. This is called anchoring.
There are also slides along the screen enabling the
text to appear on the screen. The first set of text to
appear on the screen, there is a closing curtain
transition, with the left of the screen coming
towards the middle and the right of the screen doing
to same to both meet in the middle. This helps the
text to flow and link with the rest of the trailer.
Camera:
The camera shots include long shots, close ups and
also a hand held camera at points.
The long shots from the camera help to show the
beautiful scenery and also the settings in which the
characters are in. This helps to set the scene for the
audience and get an idea as to what the film is going
to be about.
The close ups are generally of conversations of two
people and this helps to focus on what the
characters are talking about.
The hand held camera in the trailer is used to
overview events in the trailer. This shows to the
audience that there is a lot going on and it is quite
chaotic. It also represents the life of a teenager and
what it is like.
4. Narrative theory:
Linking to the narrative theory of Propp, you can see
that the two cops are the hero’s at the beginning as
they are on a mission to find a drug dealer. The drug
dealer within the school that killed a young girl, is
the villain. The villains are also the other school
teenagers who are taking drugs and misbehaving at
the university. However although the two cops are
seen as hero’s at the beginning, they seem to turn
into the villians also in a way when they settle in and
make friends. They both start to get involved in the
drinking games with the other students but they also
start to take drugs too and that shows them as being
the villians as they are not doing what they have
been asked by their job.
