A Day in the Navy

•   On April 11, 328,074 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 65,117 selected Reserve
    Sailors, with 5,713 mobilized Reserves; and 203,329 civilians are serving in the Department
    of the Navy.

•   There are 287 active ships in service; 150 (52 percent) ships, including four aircraft carriers
    and six large-deck amphibious ships, and 37 (68 percent) submarines are underway away
    from homeport.

•   There are 9,304 individual augmentees, 4,360 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on
    the ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.

•   The Navy League’s 2011 Sea-Air-Space Exposition commences in National Harbor, Md.,
    with participation from a variety of Navy leaders, to include Secretary of the Navy Ray
    Mabus, Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Navy Surgeon General
    Vice Adm. Adam M. Robinson Jr., Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Nevin P. Carr,
    Deputy Director of the Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness
    Division John Quinn and many others. With more than 150 exhibits, the event is the world's
    premier maritime exposition and provides the Navy, as well as the other services, the
    opportunity to meet and interact with industry providers who work with the latest in sea
    power technology.

•   Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/SW) Rick West releases a birthday message to
    the fleet for the submarine community’s 111th birthday.

•   Guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), guided-missile frigate USS
    Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) and fleet replenishment oiler USNS Big Horn (T-AO 198)
    participate in exercise Joint Warrior 11-1 off the coast of Scotland.

•   Africa Partnership Station West and USS Robert G Bradley (FFG 49) continue the third
    training "hub" of 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria.

•   Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) transits to Kingstown,
    Jamaica, in support of Continuing Promise 2011, a five-month humanitarian assistance
    mission to nine countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

•   Guided-missile frigate USS Boone (FFG 28), USS Thach (FFG 43) and U.S. Coast Guard
    Cutter Escanaba (WMEC 907) conduct division tactics while steaming together towards
    Brazil for the kick-off of UNITAS LANT, which begins April 15 and includes the navies of
    Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.
•   Naval Oceanographic Office personnel conduct the 37th of 76 planned airborne laser
    hydrographic survey missions off the coast of Honduras, supporting safety of navigation
    requirements from U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and Joint Inter-Agency Task Force
    South.

•   The Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines USS Scranton (SSN 756) and USS Newport
    News (SSN 750) and Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) conduct
    maritime security operations in the European Command area of responsibility.

•   Vice Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, visits the Ticonderoga-class,
    guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) while in Naples, Italy. Monterey is supporting
    maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet
    area of responsibility.

•   USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and embarked U.S. 7th Fleet staff from Fleet Anti-terrorism
    Security Team Pacific return to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, following a
    two-month patrol and support of Operation Tomodachi.

•   U.S. Navy personnel, civilian workers and Japanese employees at all Navy installations
    throughout Japan observe a one-month anniversary moment of silence at 2:46 p.m. in
    memory of those who lost their lives in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan March 11.

•   Civil service mariners and Sailors aboard Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition
    ship USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5) provide logistics services in support of Operation
    Unified Protector off the coast of Libya.

•   MH-60S Sea Hawks from the “Wildcards” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23,
    embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), conduct search and
    rescue proficiency training in support of maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden.

•   The amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45) conducts Scan Eagle unmanned
    aerial vehicle flight operations while assigned to Combined Task Force 151 in support of
    counter piracy and maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

•   While operating in the Arabian Sea, Carrier Air Wing 17, assigned to USS Carl Vinson
    (CVN 70), flies 25 sorties totaling 152 hours to support U.S. and coalition forces on the
    ground in Afghanistan.

•   Rear Adm. Alton L. Stocks, commander, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va., awards a
    Purple Heart to Marine Cpl. Daniel Dobay, who was wounded by an improvised explosive
    device while serving with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division in Afghanistan.

•   Guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) holds a steel beach picnic on its flight deck
    that includes food, music, games, and a weight-lifting competition while deployed in support
    of maritime security operations within the U.S 5th Fleet area of operations.
•   Personnel from Naval Supply Systems Command's Fleet and Industrial Supply Center
    Sigonella Site Bahrain Logistic Support Center deliver vertical launch system hatches in
    support of repairs to the USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60).

•   Four Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26, Southfield, Mich., perform
    general maintenance aboard Al Basrah Oil Terminal off the coast of Kuwait.
•   USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) transit the
    Strait of Hormuz into the Arabian Gulf in preparation for a port visit to Bahrain.

•   More than 130 Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) students are in their second
    week of first phase training, which will last seven weeks.

•   The Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, including USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Mesa Verde
    (LPD 19) and USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), conducts pre-deployment emergent integrated
    training with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit off the coast of North Carolina.

•   Deputy Commander, Navy Warfare Development Command, Rear Adm. Ken Carodine
    speaks to an audience of 200 students, parents and educators about the Navy's mission and
    capabilities at the Frisco, Texas, Career and Technical Education Center during Dallas/Fort
    Worth Navy Week.

•   Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona engineers begin the 32nd installation of the eLog
    system, a cost-effective maintenance tool developed by Corona, aboard U.S. Coast Guard
    Cutter Venturous (WMEC 625) in St. Petersburg, Fla.

•   More than 470 Navy hospital corpsmen students and 111 Navy hospital corpsmen instructors
    engage in advanced medical skills together with Airmen, Soldiers and Coast Guardsmen at
    the Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

•   Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk Logistics Support Center in Willow Grove, Penn.,
    supports the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, in the battalion’s mobilization from Pennsylvania to
    Naval Station Norfolk.

•   Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic honor guard personnel participate in 58
    veteran/retiree funeral details.

•   More than 107 fans post a response to the U.S. Navy’s Facebook page post asking fans,
    “What does your day in the Navy look like?” Guy Anastasia writes, “Retired Sailor and just
    flew back from great lakes. Watched my third generation Sailor graduate. Jeremiah Johnson
    adds, “Training steely-eyed warriors of the deep at Submarine Learning Facility, Norfolk.”
    Brock Taylor writes, “Took some cool photos of Cherry Blossoms near command hill at
    Fleet Activities Yokosuka, held a moment of silence at 1446, exactly one month after the 9.0
    earthquake and experienced a couple more rather large aftershocks.”

•   Recruiters help 197 people join America's Navy.

A Day in the Navy April 11, 2011 (LINKS ARE TO ASSOCIATED PHOTOS OR ARTICLES) • On April 11, 328,074 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 65,117 selected Reserve Sailors, with 5,713 mobilized Reserves; and 203,329 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy. • There are 287 active ships in service; 150 (52 percent) ships, including four aircraft carriers and six large-deck amphibious ships, and 37 (68 percent) submarines are underway away from homeport. • There are 9,304 individual augmentees, 4,360 of whom are mobilized Reserves, deployed on the ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations. • The Navy League’s 2011 Sea-Air-Space Exposition commences in National Harbor, Md., with participation from a variety of Navy leaders, to include Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Navy Surgeon General Vice Adm. Adam M. Robinson Jr., Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Nevin P. Carr, Deputy Director of the Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division John Quinn and many others. With more than 150 exhibits, the event is the world's premier maritime exposition and provides the Navy, as well as the other services, the opportunity to meet and interact with industry providers who work with the latest in sea power technology. • Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/SW) Rick West releases a birthday message to the fleet for the submarine community’s 111th birthday. • Guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), guided-missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) and fleet replenishment oiler USNS Big Horn (T-AO 198) participate in exercise Joint Warrior 11-1 off the coast of Scotland. • Africa Partnership Station West and USS Robert G Bradley (FFG 49) continue the third training "hub" of 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria. • Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) transits to Kingstown, Jamaica, in support of Continuing Promise 2011, a five-month humanitarian assistance mission to nine countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean. • Guided-missile frigate USS Boone (FFG 28), USS Thach (FFG 43) and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba (WMEC 907) conduct division tactics while steaming together towards Brazil for the kick-off of UNITAS LANT, which begins April 15 and includes the navies of Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.
  • 2. • Naval Oceanographic Office personnel conduct the 37th of 76 planned airborne laser hydrographic survey missions off the coast of Honduras, supporting safety of navigation requirements from U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and Joint Inter-Agency Task Force South. • The Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines USS Scranton (SSN 756) and USS Newport News (SSN 750) and Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) conduct maritime security operations in the European Command area of responsibility. • Vice Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, visits the Ticonderoga-class, guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) while in Naples, Italy. Monterey is supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. • USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and embarked U.S. 7th Fleet staff from Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team Pacific return to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, following a two-month patrol and support of Operation Tomodachi. • U.S. Navy personnel, civilian workers and Japanese employees at all Navy installations throughout Japan observe a one-month anniversary moment of silence at 2:46 p.m. in memory of those who lost their lives in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan March 11. • Civil service mariners and Sailors aboard Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5) provide logistics services in support of Operation Unified Protector off the coast of Libya. • MH-60S Sea Hawks from the “Wildcards” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4), conduct search and rescue proficiency training in support of maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden. • The amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45) conducts Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle flight operations while assigned to Combined Task Force 151 in support of counter piracy and maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. • While operating in the Arabian Sea, Carrier Air Wing 17, assigned to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), flies 25 sorties totaling 152 hours to support U.S. and coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan. • Rear Adm. Alton L. Stocks, commander, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Va., awards a Purple Heart to Marine Cpl. Daniel Dobay, who was wounded by an improvised explosive device while serving with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division in Afghanistan. • Guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) holds a steel beach picnic on its flight deck that includes food, music, games, and a weight-lifting competition while deployed in support of maritime security operations within the U.S 5th Fleet area of operations.
  • 3. • Personnel from Naval Supply Systems Command's Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Sigonella Site Bahrain Logistic Support Center deliver vertical launch system hatches in support of repairs to the USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60). • Four Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26, Southfield, Mich., perform general maintenance aboard Al Basrah Oil Terminal off the coast of Kuwait. • USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) transit the Strait of Hormuz into the Arabian Gulf in preparation for a port visit to Bahrain. • More than 130 Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) students are in their second week of first phase training, which will last seven weeks. • The Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, including USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) and USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), conducts pre-deployment emergent integrated training with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit off the coast of North Carolina. • Deputy Commander, Navy Warfare Development Command, Rear Adm. Ken Carodine speaks to an audience of 200 students, parents and educators about the Navy's mission and capabilities at the Frisco, Texas, Career and Technical Education Center during Dallas/Fort Worth Navy Week. • Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona engineers begin the 32nd installation of the eLog system, a cost-effective maintenance tool developed by Corona, aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Venturous (WMEC 625) in St. Petersburg, Fla. • More than 470 Navy hospital corpsmen students and 111 Navy hospital corpsmen instructors engage in advanced medical skills together with Airmen, Soldiers and Coast Guardsmen at the Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. • Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk Logistics Support Center in Willow Grove, Penn., supports the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, in the battalion’s mobilization from Pennsylvania to Naval Station Norfolk. • Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic honor guard personnel participate in 58 veteran/retiree funeral details. • More than 107 fans post a response to the U.S. Navy’s Facebook page post asking fans, “What does your day in the Navy look like?” Guy Anastasia writes, “Retired Sailor and just flew back from great lakes. Watched my third generation Sailor graduate. Jeremiah Johnson adds, “Training steely-eyed warriors of the deep at Submarine Learning Facility, Norfolk.” Brock Taylor writes, “Took some cool photos of Cherry Blossoms near command hill at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, held a moment of silence at 1446, exactly one month after the 9.0 earthquake and experienced a couple more rather large aftershocks.” • Recruiters help 197 people join America's Navy.
