The Steps in Long
   Division
     By Miss B.
Does McDonalds Sell Cheese
        Burgers?
O Use this helpful phrase to remember the
 steps of long division.
Before We get Started
O Underline the first digit of
    the dividend (inside box)
O Can I make a group of 6
    with 2 marbles?
O Underline the 4
O Can I make groups of 6
    with 24 marbles? YES!
O You will place the 1st digit
    of your quotient (answer)
    above the 4.
                                   6 246
O Place an x here as well
as above any digits to the
    right in the dividend.
O Your will have 2 digits in
    your quotient
Step 1: Does (Divide)
O How many
  groups of 6 can
  you make with 24
  marbles?
O Use objects or a
  multiplication
                          4
table to help you. 6 246
O You can make 4
  groups of 6
O Write the 4 above
  the 4 in the
  dividend
Step 2: McDonalds (Multiply)
O Multiply the 4 in
  the quotient by
  the 6 (divisor)
O Write the
                         4
  product under 6 246
  the 24 you
  underlined in 24
  the before we
  start step
Step 3: Sell (Subtract)
O Subtract your
 product from
 the underlined
 number in the 4
 dividend. 6 246
                    24
                    00
Step 4: Cheese (Check)
O Check that your
  difference is
  less than your
  divisor. 4
O If it is not, you 6 246
  need to check
  steps 1-3. 24
O If it is, you are 00
  set to move on
  to step 5
Step 5: Burgers (Bring Down)
O Next bring down the next
  number in the dividend.
O If it is equal to or larger
  than your divisor repeat
  the steps.
O If it is less than the
divisor, place a 0 to hold
  the place value in the
                                   4
  quotient and then bring
  down the next number in
  the dividend. (see
                                6 246
  example 2)
O If there are no more
  numbers in the dividend,
                                  24
  what ever is left over
  becomes the remainder.
  (see example 2)
                                  0 06
Step 1: Does (Divide)
O How many
  groups of 6 can
  you make with 6
  marbles?
O Use objects or a
  multiplication
                          41
table to help you. 6 246
O You can make 1
  group of 6 24
O Write the 1 above
  the 6 in the
  dividend.
                       6 0 06
Step 2: McDonalds (Multiply)
O Multiply the 1 in
  the quotient by
  the 6 (divisor)
O Write the
                         41
  product under 6 246
  the 6.
                        24
                      6 0 06
                           6
Step 3: Sell (Subtract)
O Subtract your
 product from
 the 6.
                     41
                  6 246
                    24
                  6 0 06
                       6
                       0
Step 4: Cheese (Check)
O Check that your
  difference is
  less than your
  divisor. 41
O If it is not, you 6 246
  need to check
  steps 1-3. 24
O If it is, you are 6 0 06
  set to move on
  to step 5
                           6
                           0
Step 5: Burgers (Bring Down)
O If your difference is 0
and there is nothing Your answer is 41!
  left to bring down, you
  are finished!
O If there is another digit
  in the dividend to bring
  down start the steps
                                    41
  again.
O If your difference is not
  0, but less than the
                                 6 246
  divisor and there are
  no other numbers to 24
  bring down, the
  difference becomes
  the remainder. 6 0 06
                                      6
                                      0
How can you check your
        answer?
O Multiply the
  quotient by the
  divisor.
O If your product
                              41
  is the dividend, 6 246
  you are correct!
                      41
                     x 6
                     246
Example 2
O If it is less than the
  divisor, place a 0 to
  hold the place
  value in the
  quotient and then
  bring down the
                              4 0 R5
  next number in the
  dividend.
                           6 245
O If there are no 24
  other numbers to
  bring down, it
  becomes the 005
  remainder.
