Getting a ride in a taxi cab normally requires you to stand by the roadside waving your
hands at oncoming taxis until one eventually stops. This may seem simple enough, but
during the rush hour it will take ages before you eventually get your ride.
However, with the advent of the Easy Taxi web application, which can be downloaded
for free from the Apps Store, Google Play Store, and Window Store for Android, iOS,
Blackberry, and Windows Phone devices, the hassle of getting a taxi cab ride may be a
thing of the past.
Introduced in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in early May 2013, Easy Taxi enables
people in these states who rely on taxis for transport to book a taxi cab anytime,
anywhere, at their leisure. All they need to do is confirm their pick-up point and book a
taxi with a press of a button.
After the request is sent, passengers will receive a confirmation from a taxi driver, along
with details such as the driver’s photo and name, including the vehicle registration
number. The app will also allow them to keep track of the taxi in real-time on a map.
Although downloading the Easy Taxi app is free, you need to pay a RM2.00 surcharge
as required under the SPAD regulation for on-line bookings. Currently, this surcharge is
waived for the Johor Bahru service.
Easy Taxi is present in 86 cities in 26 countries and has more than 30,000 taxi drivers in
its network. Easy Taxi has managed to secure a commanding network of 4000 taxi
2. drivers with some 50,000 apps downloaded in Malaysia and two million global
downloads globally.
“It is the perfect solution to your taxi woes. We understand the frustrations in trying to
flag down taxis, the long waiting time involved, and not knowing if you’ll reach your
destination on time and safely,” Easy Taxi Malaysia Regional Managing Director, Chan
Heng Joon said.
According to Gustavo Vaz who founded Easy Taxi in Latin America, the biggest
challenge facing Easy Taxi is customer confidence. This is because many people have
had some bad experience with the taxi service.
“There must be strict enforcement to deter cab drivers from flouting the law,” he said.
So how do the taxi drivers feel about Easy Taxi?
“I joined Easy Taxi two months ago and found that I enjoy being part of the team. It’s
very rewarding and my customers are very pleased and satisfied with the service I
provide.” taxi driver, Shin said.
