Real need for examples showing best practices
Task force launched in June 2012 at the Europeana Plenary
Wiki: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/-
/wiki/Main/Taskforce+on+hierarchical+objects
Final deliverable: January 2013
@maxkaiser

20. Main activities | 1
Identify different cases where hierarchies are involved
Eight case studies collected from different domains:
• Hierarchical description of objects from libraries
• Hierarchical representation of event-related documents
• Hierarchical objects in audiovisual archives
• Hierarchical objects in the context of the Hope project
• Hierarchies for archeological objects
• Europeana 1914–1918
• The Montiano family archive
• Israeli artist biographies
Inventory of display solutions

21. Main activities | 2
Providing best practices for mapping to EDM
@maxkaiser
22. What happened in the meeting yesterday…
Discussion of first draft of the final report
Analysis of different case studies
• Hierarchical representation of event-related documents
• Hierarchical objects in audiovisual archives
• Hierarchical description of objects from libraries
• Hierarchies for archaeological objects
Discussion of keys issues
• Question of granularity: what to include in hierarchies?
• Modelling of hierarchies in contextual resources?
• How to sequence parts in hierarchies?
• How to represent missing parts?
Task force will run for two more months
First draft version of report in December 2012
@maxkaiser
23. Task Force EDM FRBRoo (EFAP TF)
Intention: analyse how to map existing data formats into an
EDM model extended by FRBRoo
Kick-off July 16, 2012
Wiki: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/-
/wiki/Main/Task+Force+EDM+FRBRoo
@maxkaiser
24. EFAP Task Force: Goals
Start from mapping provided by CIDOC
Deliverable:
• Combined model of properties and classes including sample data
• Modeling principles and mapping rules
Results will be of use for everyone who wants to model
derivative relations in EDM
@maxkaiser
25. EFAP Task Force: Members
Chairs: Martin Doerr and Stefan Gradmann
Trond Aalberg Steffen Hennicke
Kerstin Arnold Antoine Isaac
Rodolphe Bailly Patrick LeBoeuf
Detlev Balzer Maja Žumer
Robina Clayphan Kai Eckert
Karen Coyle Justyna Walkowska

@maxkaiser
26. EFAP Task Force: Current status
3 virtual meetings: documented in the Wiki
Selection of mapping examples
• Don Quixote
• Hamlet
• Musical example
• Example from a Swiss Poster collection
Smaller groups work on the examples “offline”
Last virtual meeting (Nov 15): share and discuss first
mapping exercises – available on the Wiki:
http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/-
/wiki/Main/Prep+Call+Nov+15
@maxkaiser
27. Status after meeting yesterday
Decisions:
• Distinguish modelling for integration, querying & representation
• Use FRBR distinction “expression” vs. “work” only if needed
• Produce clear rules for use of this distinction
Use FRBRoo specialisations to optimise mappings where needed
• Identify minimal set of FRBRoo extensions which are required to
represent the level of detail found in the data
Derive mapping rules from these example mappings
• until Christmas 2012
• input for virtual meeting on January 9, 2013
Finish by February (deliverable)
@maxkaiser
28. Persistent Identifiers Task Force
Goal: investigate if Europeana should play a role in the
implementation of PIDs for its Data Providers beyond
promoting their use
Examining what that role could be
Chair: Jan Molendijk (Europeana Foundation)
12 Task Force Members
Physical meeting in June at the Europeana Plenary
Process so far:
• Question paper sent out
• Discussions followed on list
• Reference to current practices returned (e.g. HOPE)
@maxkaiser
29. PI Task Force: Next Steps
Jan Molendijk will combine input into draft position paper
Will be sent to list(s) for comments, then finalized by
End January 2013
