It highlights various events in Gandhiji’s life which provoked him to become a revolutionary using the weapon of non-violence.
Journey through conflicts, Powers, leadership that brought about the change
Episode 1
Superiority of the whites over the Indians (called coloured) preventing them to have same status and treatment like that of whites.
Gandhiji while in South Africa were thrown out of the train as he was travelling in First class which was suppose to be reserved for only native whites, and Indians were suppose to travel in 3rd class.
Leadership style of the Whites: Autocratic
Leadership style of Gandhiji has been paternalistic and charismatic, visionary throughout.
Leadership styles of others i.e. Mr. Khan (Amrish Puri): Participative leadership
Power by whites has been position power where they have always been superior and powerful than others.
Bringing about change in the law was essential, where Indians were given equal status, initially there was denial from whites to negotiate on this issue, and people were not ready to accept, then by educating the people and making them participates in the change process by throwing their identity cards. The change was brought and then finally the law was passed to give equal status to Indians but not to Africans.
During this phase he had a small conflict with his wife, where his wife Kasturba Gandhi protested to do chores done by untouchables, this was the only time in the movie that Gandhiji has been shown to lose his temper, but the tiff was sorted out by their mutual compromise
After his success of the South Africa justice, many senior leaders like Gokhale wanted Gandhiji to come back to India and lead India to freedom.
After coming back to India he went to most of Indian cities to see the how people live what is culture prevalent as he was not very much familiar to India
During his initial days in India he became a part of Indian National Congress who were active in India’s political movement and putting efforts to get freedom, members of the group were Sardar Patel (sayed jaffery), Jinnah (Alaque padmasee), Nehruji (Roshan Seth), Kriplani and Maulana Azad.Among them Jinnah was a very influential leader among the masses and others were combination of Situational and participative.
There seem to be a silent conflict prevalent from the moment Jinnah and Gandhiji met, conflict of power ,as Gandhiji was getting popular among the party leaders as wells as people of India.
Episode 2
Camparan issue, here the landlord charged heavy rent in cash and were forced to produce indigo but no one bought the crops from them. Here there was a conflict between the farmers and the government to grow crop of their own choice and rebate in taxes. This was solved by distributive bargaining negotiation where the government had to modify their rules and leading to a win-lose situation for them.
Due to continuous struggle for power between Gandhiji and the government he was imprisoned for every incidence that Gandhiji participated in. As the government were always challenged to take away their powers, and scared of terrorism wanted Gandhiji to follow non-violence which he was already advocating but people were not ready to accept the change due to prevalent and denial to accept change.
Episode 3
Jallianwala baug massacre, here the Britishers used Coercive power ,as the people were already warned not to have meetings yet they had few after the warning hence the police opened fire killing innocent individuals including women and kids. The general was an Autocratic leader
All through the struggle for freedom Gandhiji was supported by his wife Kasturba Gandhi(Rohini Hattangadi) who was a dynamic lady and who was a situational leader, though she was not involved directly in receiving power or into any conflicts or politics she always supported Gandhiji in his activities.
As the time passed there was end of non-cooperation movement and beginning of dandi march where people followed Gandhiji which later facilitated and supported people for free trade of salt.
After the round-table conference there was a conflict of power between Jinnah and Nehruji who wanted to partition India –Pakistan for hindu and muslim domination respectively but Gandhiji was against the partition, here being a democratic leader Gandhiji offered Jinnah to become First prime Minister of India using the reward power and imposing legitimate power on Nehruji to give his apparent position to Jinnah. But it dint turn out to be so, and India and Pakistan were named two different countries which further lead to problems between Hindus and Muslim which turned into a massive riot which was brought in control by Gandhiji by going on fast unto death, which was successful and all riots were controlled.
At end, Gandhiji was shot dead by Nathuram Ghodse who apparently had lot of individual power and was autocratic in his own rights.
Overall the movie gives us lesson on various styles of leadership that was prevalent and diverse set of people what the condition was that lead to managing change which involved lot of conflict and struggle for power.
Some Quotes that were used in the movie effectively:
Nehru: Bapuji, the whole country is moving.
Gandhi: Yes. but in what direction?
Gandhi: An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
Vince Walker: You're an ambitious man, Mr. Gandhi.
Gandhi: I hope not.
Gandhi: If you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth
Brigadier: You don't think we're just going to walk out of India!
Gandhi: Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate
Indian history is one of amazing one any country can witness having leaders of all traits and characters reacting differently in different situation.
Hey ram!!!
