- Emotional intelligence or Emotional quotient (EQ) was introduced by Daniel Goleman.
- was popularized as a result of Daniel Goleman’s (1995) work.
- can be defined as the ability to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotion, to
discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use
emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.
EQ – refers to the ability of the person to accurately perceive, evaluate, express and regulate
emotions and feelings.
According to Salovey And Mayer (1990) emotional intelligence is:
“The ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among
them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.”
According Reuven Bar-On (1996) emotional intelligence is:
“An array of non-cognitive (emotional and social) capabilities, competencies and skills that
influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures”.
According to Six Seconds Team (1997) emotional intelligence is:
“The capacitates to create optimal results in you relationships with yourself and others.”
According to Maurice Elias (2001) emotional intelligence is:

Three major models:
Ability Models regard emotional intelligence as a pure form of mental ability and
thus as a pure intelligence
Mixed models of emotional intelligence combine mental ability with personality
characteristics such as optimism and well-being.
Trait Models of emotional intelligence refers to an individual’s self-perceptions of
their emotional abilities.
The five components of EQ are the following:
1. Self-regulation – refers to the ability to calm down anxiety, control impulsiveness, and
react appropriately to anger
2. Motivation – refers to the passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status.
3. Empathy – refers to the ability to respond to the unspoken feeling of others.
4. Self-awareness – refers to the awareness of one’s own personality or individuality.
5. Social skills – refers to the proficiency to manage relationships and building networks.
