EQ: What are the characteristics of the two forms of
democracy?
HW: Complete Venn Diagram
                     SPONGE
#1. Take out your gov’t comic
strip
#2. Create a ―notice and
wonder‖ on a sheet of paper
Parliamentary Democracy Presidential Democracy
• Presidential-- a system of government in
which the executive branch (president) exists
  separately from the legislature
• Citizens vote for leader
  •Examples: Russia, US

• Parliamentary – citizens elect legislature,
  legislature selects the leader
   •United Kingdom, Germany
Parliamentary Presidential System

Citizens Citizens
• There are TWO types of Democratic governments in the
  world

• 1. Presidential
  2. Parliamentary

• Sounds easy enough. So if you have a president, you’re
Presidential and if you have a parliament, you’re
  Parliamentary??
• Ehhh…not exactly. Let me explain…
• Citizens vote for members of the legislative
branch, and then the legislature chooses the
  leader
  • The citizens DO NOT get to directly choose the
    leader
• They have to vote on members of legislature
first, and then those representatives choose
  the leader
• Head of government and head of state are
  TWO different people

 Examples: United Kingdom, Germany,
• Citizens usually vote for members of the executive AND legislative
  branch
   • Citizens directly vote for the leader
• A single person is elected as the leader
• This person is both head of government (chief executive) and
  head of state

Examples: U.S.A., Russia, Mexico
• Unique thing about this type: there’s a separation of
powers between the branches of government
• The leader is constitutionally independent of the
  legislature
  • Example: the leader does not make the laws, the legislature does
• Parliamentary: Citizens do not vote directly for the
leader. They vote on the legislature, then the legislature
  chooses the leader.

• Presidential: Citizens directly vote on the leader.

• Which would you prefer to participate in??

Democracy
Oligarchy
Autocracy
Not Sure
1.
I have a single ruler with
     absolute power.
In my country, the people
 are in charge because they
 can vote.
• I can be a dictatorship or an
  absolute monarchy.
• I have a small group of
  people ruling my country.
The citizens have no participation
 in my government.
• 1. What are the two types of
  Autocratic governments?
• 2. Who rules the country in an
  Oligarchy?
• 3. Compare and contrast Autocracy
  vs. Democracy.
• 4. What are the two types of
  Democratic governments?
5. How is the leader chosen in a
Parliamentary democracy?
6. Do the citizens get to choose the
leader in a Parliamentary democracy?
7. How is the leader chosen in a
Presidential democracy?
I can be presidential or
parliamentary.
• Your Task: Create a mascot that will go with the two ways that
citizens can participate in Democratic governments,
  Parliamentary and Presidential.

• Fold your paper in half—on each side:
1. Draw and color the mascot.
2. Write a brief description of why the mascot was chosen.

     • Your paper should look something like this…
