CHARACTERIZED BY THE
COMBINATION OF THE TWO
WORDS, "MONO" (ONE) AND
"RAIL", MEANING A
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM THAT IS
SUPPORTED AND STABILIZED
ALONG A SINGLE RAIL, WHICH
COMMONLY IS CALLED A BEAM
WAY FOR AN ELEVATED SYSTEM.
3. CLASSIFICATION
1.MONORAILS THAT ARE SUSPENDED
UNDER A BEAM WAY ARE ALL ELEVATED
TYPES, AND BECAUSE OF NECESSARY
TRAFFIC CLEARANCE UNDER THE VEHICLE,
HAS THE LARGEST AERIAL REQUIREMENT
IN MONORAIL COMPARISONS. THE BEAM
WAY IS ABOVE THE VEHICLE AND
PROPULSION MOTORS AND BOGIES ARE
ON TOP OF THE VEHICLES. AN EXAMPLE IS
THE WUPPERTAL MONORAIL IN
GERMANY. THIS IS PERHAPS THE OLDEST
OF ALL MONORAILS AND IS STILL IN
OPERATION.

2. MONORAILS THAT ENVELOPE AND STRADDLE A BEAM WAY A TYPICAL AND MOST APPLIED MONORAIL
WORLD WIDE IS THE ALWEG MONORAIL CONCEPT, WHICH ENVELOPES AND STRADDLES A NARROW
DEEP BEAM WAY. THE ALWEG VEHICLE IS SUPPORTED BY 2 BOGIES, EACH HAVING LOAD BEARING
WHEELS ON THE TOP OF THE BEAM, AND IS GUIDED BY 2 ROWS OF STABILIZING WHEELS ALONG EACH
SIDE OF THE BEAM WAY. IN THIS CONCEPT THE BEAM WAY IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE VEHICLE
SYSTEM EITHER WHEN ELEVATED OR AT SURFACE.

monorail technology trade named Urbanaut, which has a unique central guide rail on top of the
beam way that prevents uplift and derailment of the vehicle.

KL Monorail
THE KL MONORAIL LINE IS AN URBAN MONORAIL SYSTEM IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA. IT OPENED ON 31
AUGUST 2003, WITH 11 STATIONS RUNNING 8.6 KM (5 MI) ON TWO PARALLEL ELEVATED TRACKS. IT
CONNECTS THE KUALA LUMPUR CENTRAL TRANSPORT HUB WITH THE "GOLDEN TRIANGLE".

15. STATIONS
THE LINE CONSISTS OF A SINGLE DUAL-WAY LINE THAT LINKS AREAS OF INNER KUALA LUMPUR
PREVIOUSLY NOT SERVED BY RAIL TRANSPORT.
THE STATIONS ARE DESIGNED AS ELEVATED STRUCTURES WITH TICKETING FACILITIES ON EITHER
THE GROUND LEVEL (AS SEEN IN THE KL SENTRAL STATION) OR THE FIRST-FLOOR LEVEL. THE
PLATFORMS ARE ON THE TOP FLOOR, SEPARATED FROM THE MONORAIL LINES BY FENCING.
THEY WERE ORIGINALLY COVERED BY LARGE CANVAS ROOFS, WHICH WERE REPLACED IN 2014
BY ALUMINIUM ZINC ROOFS.[2] CERTAIN STATIONS ARE SITUATED ABOVE ROADWAYS, OR ARE
SLIGHTLY LONGER THAN OTHERS. EACH STATION IS ALSO DESIGNATED WITH A SPONSOR, WITH
ROUTE MAPS ASSOCIATING EACH STATION WITH A PARTICULAR PRODUCT BRAND.
16. Rolling stock
The line uses permanently coupled two-car trains of a similar design to the Seattle Center Monorail's ALWEG
trains.[9] Each monorail train can accommodate 158 passengers during regular operations. The monorail carriages
themselves were constructed by Scomi Rail, a Malaysian monorail manufacturer,[9] at the Scomi Rail plant in
Rawang, which also featured its own tracks for monorail train tests.[10]
In December 2014, KL Monorail began putting the first two of its four-car trains into service[11] The Scomi SUTRA
monorails were designed and manufactured by Malaysian rail company Scomi Rail. Each train can accommodate
430 passengers per trip, compared with 213 passengers for the two-car trains.[11] Two more four-car trains are
scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2015 with the remaining eight arriving in stages. All the four-car trains
are scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2015.[11] Upon the delivery of the new four-car trains, the original
two-car trains which have been in use since KL Monorail opened will be decommissioned.[11] The new trains are
equipped with four closed-circuit television cameras and space for wheelchairs and strollers
