His real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
He was born on October 2, 1869 in India, which was then part of the
British Empire.
He was called Mahatma because it means “GREAT SOUL”.

He studied law in London, when he was 18 years old.

to perform legal services in South Africa.
He spent 7 years in jail in different moments of his life because he
defended Indian people´s rights.
1. The British didn´t allow Indian people to travel in first class service

Indian people but always in a peaceful way.
He was against violence. He was a PACIFIST.
In the late afternoon of January 30, 1948, the 78-year-old Gandhi was
shot by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist upset at Gandhi´s
tolerance of Muslims.
The violent act took the life of a pacifist who spent his life preaching
non-violence.
Godse and a co-conspirator were executed by hanging in November
1949.
