2. Mahatma Gandhi - Biography
 His real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
 He was born on October 2, 1869 in India, which was then part of the
British Empire.
 He was called Mahatma because it means “GREAT SOUL”.

 When he was 13 years old he got married with Kasturba in an
arranged marriage. She was 13 years old too. They had 5 kids.
 He studied law in London, when he was 18 years old.

 After looking for a job in India, Gandhi obtained a one-year contract
to perform legal services in South Africa.
 He spent 7 years in jail in different moments of his life because he
defended Indian people´s rights.
1. The British didn´t allow Indian people to travel in first class service
in trains.
2. The British didn´t want the Indian people to vote.
3. The British didn´t let them sell salt, an important food for their diet.

 He fought very strongly against these acts of discrimination to the
Indian people but always in a peaceful way.
 He was against violence. He was a PACIFIST.
 In the late afternoon of January 30, 1948, the 78-year-old Gandhi was
shot by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist upset at Gandhi´s
tolerance of Muslims.
 The violent act took the life of a pacifist who spent his life preaching
non-violence.
 Godse and a co-conspirator were executed by hanging in November
1949.
