In skydiving, "cutting away" means getting rid of a malfunctioning main parachute so that you can deploy your reserve. It's a life-saving technique where you come to realize that what's happening isn't working and you fully commit yourself to trust your backup parachute. The term "cutting away" has a lot of parallels in real life and this past year, I cut away from my 9-5 job to focus on traveling, living my dreams, and working in RubyMotion full time. This talk will focus on what you need to do to prepare to cut away, tips for how to engage with the RubyMotion community, and techniques on how to find clients with fun and meaningful projects.

My Plan:
I want to travel the USA in a converted van full time
and skydive.(Specific)
I’m going to do this when I’m billing 10+ hours a week
on the side and have my emergency fund at $20,000. I
will continue to stay debt-free.
(Measurable/Achievable)
I’m going to leave my apartment in 3 months to go out
on the road. (Realistic/Time-specific)

• Engage with open source community
• Community recognition
• Portfolio of reusable code
• Goodwill
• Likeminded clients find YOU!
• Take the leap
BSides las vegas 2013 there was a talk by Beau Woods and Taylor Banks. One worked 6 months and then traveled for 6 months. The other was working on building his business so he could live with his wife full time in Costa Rica. And it got me thinking about what I wanted to do. So i thought about it for a while…
40 hours a week would be way too much do do all those things.
Let me tell you… THIS is not the correct way to quit a job. It’s more like getting on a boat.
You don’t get on a boat by JUMPING in with both feet. You put one foot in and then the other. Otherwise you’ll risk rocking the boat so much that you tip over and fall in the water. So I’m going to talk to you today about how to transition from the dock to the boat without getting wet.
So I start out to make a plan.
Also - planning to make a plan is not a plan.
Multiple sources of income create income stability and variety.
I now have 10 apps in the app store that generate passive income.
At whatever you’re good at and whatever you want to work on. I wanted to work in RubyMotion full time so I started working on opensource RubyMotion.
This doesn’t include direct commits to my own projects or to gems I own like motion-print or motion-imager
I contribute to opensource out of selfish motivations. Pure and simple. And you should too. Use the hard work of other people to make your apps and when there’s something you need that it doesn’t do, MAKE it and give it back to the community!
mine was RubyMotion. Yours might be something else but I hope it’s RubyMotion
I’ve been traveling full time in my van for almost a year with no signs of stopping.
Because I have the microphone.
I’ve gotten to have a lot of awesome adventures. Like jumping out of a hot air balloon on Thanksgiving Day last year.
Side note about skydiving - there are a few unofficial rules:
I also achieved a goal of mine to start wingsuiting… you know: the “squirrel suits”
Notice the sign above the airport sign.
and you get to have friends take badass photos of you hanging off airplanes. Yes, I do have the InfiniteRed logo on my helmet. (Todd, you can give me the cash after the presentation.)
I hope my story and these images inspire you to follow your dreams and do what makes you happy. Whether that’s quitting your job or not. But if you’re NOT going to quit your job, please still contribute to open source.
