3. Cheap Ship….. What is this?
Cheap Ship gives you the best possible prices for
shipping terminal to terminal. You have to have
everything packed tight into boxes and taped up
well with duct tape. You can drop them off at our
major port city terminals and a few internal ones
like Atlanta and Chicago. We can then ship your
things to a terminal anywhere in the world. You
then will have to organize customs clearance, pay
port fees etc. Want to know more?...........
4. Packing
Pack everything into moving boxes, cases or trunks.
Use plenty of bubble wrap, make sure everything is
packed full and tight and taped up well with duct
tape. Your boxes are going to be placed onto a
pallet 48 x 40 inches so you will get better space
usage if all your boxes are the same size.
5. Palletizing
When you drop off your things at the terminal, they will be
stacked onto a pallet. Pallets are 48 inches by 40 inches and
made of plastic or wood. Obviously items of a uniform shape
will stack well together and makes the best usage of space.
Your shipment will then be shrink wrapped to keep it all
together. Pallets can be loaded up to a height of about 6.5
feet safely. Beyond that you will most likely be using 2 pallets.
6. Drop Off
If you would like to load and drop off your
own pallet we can send you a pallet, securing
straps and plastic cover for an additional $150 on
top of the price. If not you can drop off your things
on the arranged date, Mon-Fri 8-30-5-30pm. You
need to make sure all your boxes have the labels on
we emailed you after booking. Hand the terminal
clerk your bill of lading showing your shipping line
booking number and they will tell you where to drop
off your things.
7. Shipping
Normally within 7 days the pallet will have been
loaded into a shipping container and taken to the
port for loading onto a vessel. Depending on where
the destination is it will be on the ship anywhere
from 2-6 weeks. You will be able to click on our
tracking program “U Track” any time on our web site
to see the progress and see the shipping information,
container number, and eta of the ship at the
destination port.
8. Documentation
After you have dropped off your things at the terminal
we will measure the loaded pallet and then invoice you
by email based on the volume and the cubic rate we
quoted you. Once paid we will confirm the loading into
the shipping container and soon after the vessel sails
from the port we will email you a Bill Of Lading that
will confirm the voyage number, departure and eta and
the shipping agents name at the destination you will
need to contact before the ship arrives there.
9. Arrival Overseas
You will need to check with Customs at the
destination to see what paperwork you need to
produce in order to clear your shipment. Also check
with the consulate before you depart as in some
cases you might need some paperwork stamped at
origin before you depart.
10. Customs Clearance
After speaking to the shipping agent who will confirm
what you will need to do, you will probably have to visit a
customs office and show the local officer your shipping
documentation, a packing list showing what is in your
boxes, passport, possibly showing work or visit visa and a
completed local customs form. Depending on the Country
you will then wait a few hours or may be days until you
are notified that your shipment has cleared customs.
If you prefer you can probably pay the shipping agent to
arrange the customs clearance for you. Average charge is
about $150 to arrange Customs Clearance but can depend
on the destination.
11. Port Charges
Once you have got your shipment cleared through
Customs you will then have to pay the port charges
and handover fees to the shipping agent before you
can collect them. You will also have to pay any
customs inspection or x ray charges at this time.
The port charges or “THC” (terminal handling
charges) will range depending on the country and
the volume of your shipment but will probably be a
minimum of $250 and can then increase about $25 /
cubic meter.
12. Collection
Once all fees are paid at the shipping terminal’s
office, you will be given a delivery order paper that
you can take to the warehouse and collect your
things. You can also ask the agent a price for
delivery if you need.
13. Please Note
You need to be in Country when your things arrive and get them
cleared through customs asap. The shipping terminals will start
to charge storage after 3-5 days of your cargo arrival. If you
need storage arrange to collect it from the shipping terminal
and put it into a self storage place. Do not presume a shipping
terminal will store things for a similar price as a self store!
Our guarantee pricing does not cover Cheap Ship services as you
will have to pay fees at the destination before you can collect
your things from the terminal.
14. Old Wives Tales
Movers will tell you that you can not pack your own
things as its against the law or the very least will cause
huge problems with customs at the destination
resulting in delays. This is totally False and spread by
those who employ packers at a cheap rate per hour and
provide you a packing service often costing you
thousands. If you follow our documentation procedures
there will be no delays due to you packing things
yourself. In fact by the time we have finished with you,
your documentation will look as good if not better than
a mover and customs at the destination will have no
idea whether you packed the things yourself or a
mover packed them for you.
And an apple a day works too!
15. Shipping 101
It doesn’t matter which shipping service you
choose, your boxes will be loaded into a shipping
container at one of our shipping terminals and then
loaded onto a container vessel. These shipping
containers carry most of the worlds trade between
countries and is the safest, waterproof and secure
method of transport.
16. Math 101
(How to work out your cubic feet)
If the boxes you are using don’t list the cubic feet on them,
measure in inches the Length x Width x Height, multiply
together and divide by 1728 and that will give you the cubic
feet of your carton. Now if you want to work out the volume
of the whole shipment, stack all your boxes together into a big
square or cube and again measure the longest, widest and
highest points of the stack, multiply them together and divide
by 1728 and that will be your volume.
For our cheap ship option, your
things will be stacked on pallets
48 x 40 inches and the height
will be based on the highest
point of the pallet so try this at
home by stacking your things in
an area 48”x40” using a tape
measure and masking tape.
