FIELD STUDY 6 – On Becoming the 21st Century Teacher
THE TEACHERIN A SCHOOL SETTING
______________________________________________________________________
My FS Learning Task Overview:
A teacher as a professional will always be found in a school setting. A teacher’s
official working place is a school. A school is an institution where learning occurs under
the guidance of a professional called the teacher.
How does a teacher operate or function in a school setting? How will a teacher
manage the learning environment in the school setting?
My Desired Learning Outcomes:
 List the activities in the daily routine of the teacher.
 Identify the teacher’s role in creating a conducive learning environment in the
school.
My Learning Essentials:
A regular school day is equivalent to 8 hours. It begins officially at 8:00 in the
morning and ends up at 5:00 in the afternoon. Adjustments are sometimes made, but
the time spent in school is 8 hours. Majority (of the eight hours) is spent guiding the
learners in their lessons, which is called the contact period. Usually, the teacher is
assigned to teach for 6 hours. The remaining time of 2 hours is spent for co-curricular
activities. Normally, there are five schooldays week, Monday to Friday.
Usually, a teacher is assigned to one class, as a class adviser. She is made to
teach one or more subject content areas depending on the population of the school and
the number of teachers. There are schools where the teacher teaches all the subjects
for the whole class while in bigger schools they have subject area specialists, who teach
the same subject in the same grade level in different grade levels.

My Learning Map:
This experiential learning episode will take you to the school setting. You will
spend more time making observations and talking to your resource teacher. Here are
the steps that will guide you in the journey today.
Step 1: Visit a particular teacher in the school
Step 2: Secure the teacher’s program. Study the time schedule and the activities.
Step 3: Make a school setting observation at a certain period of the day’s
activities.
Based on the daily program, find out what the teacher is supposed to do during
the time of your visit. Observe what the teacher is doing. Take note of the different
activities.

FIELD STUDY 6 – On Becoming the 21st Century Teacher
My Reflections / Insights:
Based on the teacher’s program, your observations and your interviews, answer the
following questions
1. Would you consider teaching as a full time job? Why? Why not?
Answer:
Yes, I would consider teaching as a full time job, it is because it requires
commitment on the job. Commitment is one of the most important factors to
become a good and an effective teacher. Teaching is exciting yet a very difficult
profession. A teacher must know how to handle his/her students’ diverse
behavior and characteristics. A teacher must also be flexible at all time. He/she
must know to solve from the least to major problems at different situation and
handles such situation calmly and at the same time, a teacher must become
patient at all time.
2. Are the conditions in the classroom conducive to the welfare of both the learners
and teacher? How will you improve it?
Answer:
In the classroom that I have observed, the students were noisy even if their
teacher is around, maybe because they were not disciplined well. I would say
that the condition on that classroom is fair enough to be considered conducive to
the welfare of both the learners and teacher. To improve this situation, the
teacher must know first how to discipline his/her student. He/she must be look
respectful, intelligent and approachable. Also, the learning must not only be given
through discussions but also through group activities. With these, there will be a
student-student as well as student-teacher interaction.
3. After closely observing the teacher in the school setting, are you motivated to
continue on becoming a teacher? What in the teacher’s practices inspire you to
become a professional teacher?
Answer:
After observing the teacher in the school setting, I can say that teaching is
really an interesting profession and I was become more motivated to pursue my
degree. Seeing the students enjoyed participating in which you can see on their
faces that they were eager to learn is what inspires me to become a professional
teacher. A teacher that really knows every detail of what he/she is going to teach
and how she handle and manage her time well for almost 8 hours a day and 5
days a week is also very inspirable for us future teachers.
FIELD STUDY 6 – On Becoming the 21st Century Teacher
4. How can I improve the school setting that I have observed when I become a
teacher?
a. Classroom Arrangement
Students will be tasked to arrange the classroom (table, chairs) before and
after every class. The attention of the students who are changing seats will be
called. Disciplinary actions will be incurred.
b. Bulletin Board Display
Announcements and school updates will be placed on the bulletin board to
keep the students posted. It will be removed once it is obsolete.
c. School Playground
The school playground will be maximized to cater different school and
extracurricular activities that encourage students to participate.
