There are probably a million presentations happening around the world at this moment, with 10 million people sitting in them. And 95% of them are pants. Dull, tedious affairs which do nothing to help the audience engage with your idea. You know what I mean by this. You have probably sat through a lot of them. And if you are truthful you have probably given a few as well
What do I mean by a pants presentation?
What does this mean? That’s 7.1 million people. They don’t want to be there. Even the other 25% are not getting it. They are not engaging with your idea!
We know what a pants presentation is, so we don’t do them do we….. I am standing up here with a big target on my chest giving a presentation on presentations, so I took the opportunity to shoot myself first.
It took me about 1 minute to find this in one of my presentations.
But I am not the only one. Lots of interesting information here – but is it relevant to a presentation? Better in a handout?
And who would care about longevity of composites – after a quarter of this slide you would just be thinking of the longevity of the presentation.
Long Boring Bad slides Un-inspiring
Help! What do we do about this? Presentations are important communication tools. They can work wonders for you – if they are done right. Well – first step in solving a problem is realising it exists. How can we change this? Want SHORT SIMPLE LEGIBLE ENGAGING 10minutes, so just time for a couple of thoughts today.
But first – stop! You need to think about whether a presentation is the best method to communicate!
First of all – should this be a presentation? Slides are to communicate conclusions and insight, not present large amounts of data – if this is the case then give out a document Don’t try and go half way and have a slidument or teleprompter So how do we avoid pants presentations and create splendid ones?
Slides should support your point – you are making it. Keep them simple – one idea per side – slides are free! Cluttered slides distract the audience and they don’t listen to what you are saying.
Remember – use your slides to support your point. Highlight what is important. What is the one insight or conclusion you you want your audience to take away from this? Stoning story – if you need a pointer to highlight an area on a slide – it is too complicated!
Use good quality images – have power and add interest Nothing worse than bad clip art. Consider using sketches – these can be powerful ways of communicating ideas. If you are presenting possible concepts – sketches don’t look perfect and are more likely to invite comment Where to get images? Cameras – take some yourself! Istockphoto Free sites Think about cropping images or modifying them to help with message – xnview, photoshop
The best slides in the world will still need someone to present them When presenting – look at your audience – eye contact. Remember the slides are there to support your point, not make it! Use notes to remind yourself of what to say! Not bullet points. Use presenter view. Consider telling a story…… If you want to know more we have some good books just in and there are plenty of resources on the web!
That’s alright for creative people. But what about the real world? Well, there is no difference. Presentations are about communication, whether ideas or insights. Just apply the same idea to data.
Here we have a classic case. Based on a standard template slide from powerpoint....... This has both a table and a graph repeating the same things – this is rarely necessary and does not help your audience 3D graphs rarely (or never) provide additional clarity. They make it more difficult to interpret the data. And as for the bullet points – just repeating what I could say. And spelling mistakes as well...... So what is the point you want people to take from this? Strong positive support for tigers?
Simplify, highlight Don’t manipulate! Just a few minutes extra work makes lot clearer. But if the purpose is to highight the conclusion in support of work then….
Conclusion – maybe just a picture…… Use the power of images!
Don’t have enough time to go into lots of detail. But there is a wiki page with links to good sources of inspiration and information. Just remember Presentations do not have to be pants. They are your chance to get your ideas and knowledge across and to help change the world. Do it with simplicity Do it with style Do it with passion And all presentations can be splendid
