People have a craving for the outdoors for several reasons. Spending time in nature provides psychological benefits like reduced stress from being in fresh air away from cities. It also improves bonding with family and friends during outdoor activities. Being active outdoors as a youth provides skills that lead to success later in life, such as risk assessment, self-reliance, teamwork and environmental stewardship. Some extreme examples show that adventurers are drawn to challenging themselves in the outdoors through activities like caving, despite risks. Overall, interacting with the natural world enhances both mental and physical well-being.

3. Only recently people have actually had a craving for the
outdoors because 100 years ago you were working and living
around it. Now we’ve got transport and technology, make the
most of now, people say. But the outdoors has become part of
us and we are slipping away from it. Maybe a reason is that it is
harder to do something like climb Mt Everest and be famous for
it because it has already been done. When you’ve climbed a
peak, or something, you want more so you do another and
another and eventually you get really into it. I think this is the
craving, being away from the city and mainly feeling free.
Freedom is a lot of things and is a nice feeling.

Outdoor recreation can occur at many levels, e.g. from enjoying
autumn colours in a local park to extreme mountain climbing
adventures. It is very important and valuable at all levels and is
an expected component of our lives not a luxury item for the
privileged few. It is a big part of our daily lives, not separate
from other aspects of our other lives, and as such it plays an
important part in the quality of life. New Zealanders value the
opportunity to escape to the outdoors and enjoy either the
active, social or learning benefits of being in the outdoors.
Outdoor recreation can be good on many levels like social,
cultural, environmental and much more.

6. Are people in the outdoors?
According to a Sport and Recreation NZ (SPARC) survey on participation levels in
physical activities, men seem to like to get out there and do things like tramping which is
sixth most popular which doesn’t even feature in the women’s top ten. This shows men
go out there more and do things. Six of the top ten activities for men are all outdoors,
while for women, four of the top ten activities for women are outdoors. This means that
only a small percentage of women have a craving for sports like tramping and climbing.
The reason they could crave these sports is that it is a sport more popular for their
gender making the craving stronger. Less women do these sports but tend to be very
good at them.
This shows that the majority of people enjoy the outdoors so may have a craving.

7. What might be the reasons they
crave the outdoors?
Intrepid magazine describes how a woman craves the outdoors so much that she puts herself in
dangerous positions like being trapped in Waitomo Caves. Jane Furket was recovering in hospital from
being trapped for 10 hours deep within the Waitomo Caves. She was with two companions and fell into a
stream 1100m below the surface. She suffered a broken hip and lost 3 teeth. She was trapped between
2.40pm and 1.30am. It was a challenging rescue which involved carrying a stretcher through the windy
caves. She was an experienced, recreational caver from the Nelson Caving Club.

11. Conclusion
Why do people have a craving
for the outdoors?
Many people in New Zealand enjoy being in the outdoors. People like Mark Inglis and
Jane Furkitt who put themselves in positions in the outdoors that almost killed them seem
to go back for more. This presentation proves that people are so bewildered and
amazed by the outdoors and they enjoy being away from everything, which makes you
feel very privileged and makes you think about all the good points in life rather than the
bad making you feel less stress. As well as that there is a bonus, you stay fit and healthy
or just enjoy the feeling. Being in the outdoors gives you skills like trust and
determination that you can use in other parts of your life.
