1. Professional Development should be ongoing with
instruction and technology.
2. Teachers must have strong beliefs in formative assessment.
3. Communication lines must be open and responsive.
4. Teachers must see purpose in technology based formative
assessment.
5. PLCs must share common beliefs & believe in student
engagement.
6. PLCs must believe that formative assessment in instruction
and the technology that assists and expedites the process is
connected to school improvement and student achievement.

PLCs – Professional Learning Communities
 PLCs are teachers and administrators that “seek and
share learning, and act on their learning” (Hord, 1997,
p. 10)
 PLCs are associated with workplace educational
organizations arranged by subject or grade level by the
educational hierarch of educators

CoPs – Communities of Practice
 Often teachers in PLCs turn to communities of practice
(CoPs) to develop their own identities and roles to meet
the educational organization’s goals.
 CoPs do not operate on agendas or set meetings, they
“share their experiences and knowledge in free-flowing
creative ways that foster new approaches to problems”
(Wenger & Snyder, 2000) and may meet face-to-face or
online.

PLC’s and CoP’s goals are to embrace the spirit of
collaboration and enhance their effectiveness as
professionals for the benefit of students.

1) External factors outside of the
teachers’ control – hardware,
software, etc.
(Ertmer, 1999; Ertmer, Ottenbreit-Leftwich, Sadik, Sendurur, & Sendurur, 2012; Kim,
Kim, Lee, Spector, & DeMeester, 2013)
Two types of barriers affect technology
utilization in the classroom:
2) Internal factors – teacher beliefs
and their perceptions.
What are your beliefs and perceptions on the
use of technology in your teaching and
assessment FOR learning?
1. I believe students should be assessed more subjectively
with portfolios and other subjective methods.
2. I believe that you can’t adequately assess students in some subjects.
3. My course is not assessed at this grade level or subject area.
4. I don’t have the time to learn the technology.
5. I don’t have the support that I need to learn the technology.
6. I can’t work with her/him. We can’t work together.
7. Data doesn’t show everything that my students need to know.
8. There’s too much technology to learn with so many options.

  4. Last year I began working with teachers and administrators with technology. This demonstrates the type of things that I did. Over half the time, I was working with teachers, assisting them with their most pressing technology integration needs. I also worked with campus and central office administration, assessment development, trouble shooting, my EdD research, training, and other tasks. I would like to increase the time that I have with teachers this year. My job centers on helping teachers.
  5. The majority of my time with teacher assistance centered around assessment development, troubleshooting, and data results. Very little time was spent collaborating with teachers. I would like to spend more time with teachers this year collaborating. I can help you find different ways to teach with technology…
