The media product challenges conventions of real pop music videos and packaging in the following ways:
1) The music video uses fewer shots and camera angles than a typical pop video and incorporates colors that match the heartbreak theme of the song rather than bright colors.
2) The digipack packaging has similar photos but uses matching somber colors rather than bright hues typically seen in pop albums.
3) Both the video and packaging take influence from Ariana Grande's simple, cohesive album design to emphasize the song's meaning rather than drawing attention through flashy elements, as is common in pop genres.
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. My music video uses the idea of other music videos by the way the
angles are used and how they move, and also using the idea of
using the conventions of a music video. This means having
someone that relates to the song that can also lip sync too. Not
only this but because my music video was a pop genre I chose to
challenge it with my group to go for an alternative pop which goes
against the conventions of a pop music video. A normal pop video
that I had researched showed that it is crazy, loud, has a lot of
colours and uses a lot of shots, however my group chose a pop
song which was a heartbreak song, so we went against everything
and did the opposite, so instead of using a lot of bright colours, we
used colours that matched the song and the meaning. We also
made sure that the music video had a lot of scenes but were
similar which was still the same as normal pop music videos but
instead we used less shots and angle movements so that it weren’t
extreme and went with the heartbreak song.
3. The digipack also was different to normal pop genre digipacks
because they usually have bright colours, a lot of colours and have
similar pictures, however we copied the idea of having similar
pictures but instead of it being colourful we decided to make it like
the music video and used colours that went with the song. The cd
cover and back cover use the same type of pictures with different
poses and style which made it look like a pop genre cd but with the
idea of making it alternative going against the conventions. The
types of digipacks I looked at were pop albums but because the
whole idea in my group was to be alternative we decided to look at
albums that matched our genre. One of the albums we looked at
was the Ariana Grande album. This album is simple and looks the
sae throughout. Because it is simple it goes against the idea of pop
being crazy and colourful so because of this we use the idea of the
Ariana Grande album and took it into consideration to make our
digipack look simple and the same throughout so that it matched
the song, ‘reason why’.
4. This is the Ariana Grande album that we had used to help us in
coming up with ideas to make our own.
The idea of this was to keep the
simple look of it because it
makes a big impact on the artist
as well as what they want to put
across. This shows how it is
about her and that was what we
wanted out album to look like so
we took the idea of this and used
it for our own.
However, the writing on this is small, we decided to make the
writing on ours bigger so that it did fit with the pop genre and so
that it was more out there too.
