travel, with a partner, from the
north end of the building to the
south end. Students will then
travel from the east to the west
end while using a compass.
Students should travel in the
shortest distance available.
located in the park. Students will
have to correctly identify the
species of tree before moving to
the next location (mark or
waypoint). Multiple choice task
cards with tree species on it will
be provided.

Objectives:
SWBAT navigate themselves,
with a partner, around another
park by NVCS (Holmes Foster
park).
Equipment:
10 ETREX GPS devices
Activities:
Students will provided with GPS
coordinates of specific trees
found in Holmes-Foster park.
Students will input the
coordinates and only use the GPS
ETREX devices to find the
waypoints. At each waypoint
students will have to identify the
correct species of tree before
moving to the next waypoint.
Day 6
Objectives:
SWBAT navigate themselves,
with a partner, around Mount
Nittany (nearby mountain).
Equipment:
6-7 topographical maps of Mount
Nittany, 10 ETREX GPS
devices, 6-7 compasses
Activities:
This is the culminating activity of
the unit. Students will hike and
navigate, with a partner, Mount
Nittany finding waypoints and
caches along the way.
Summative Assessment (Day 4)
Answer the following questions concerning Outdoor Adventure Education. Please use complete
sentences.
Name__________________________________________ Date____________
1. What can a topographical map tell you about a specific area?
2. Explain how you can use a compass to navigate yourself?
3. What star constellation is important when trying to navigate in the dark?

cards, whistle
Introduction: 5-7 minutes
(Check for Understanding) An overview of the 1st lesson in this unit will be covered.
Students will be asked questions verbally and responses will be written on the whiteboard
in the Multi-Purpose Room.
Questions 1- What can you tell me about the Map we looked at yesterday? (Student
responses should include the GPS coordinates of Tussey View Park: 40. 7838452 / 77.
8411673 and descriptions of the area behind our school)

should include…have a partner with you at all times, be prepared with hydration,
protection, nutrition, and first aid, have a plan, etc,)
Questions 3-What can you tell me about the GPS dev ices we used in the first lesson of this
unit? (Responses should include how to power them on, how to use the menu function, how
to mark a waypoint, discussion of finding waypoints using the “Go to” function.
Student Objectives: Student Will Be Able To
SWBAT demonstrate loco motor movements and fitness activities at each waypoint
necessary to navigate and complete the Waypoint station performances (when students find
each waypoint they will follow cues to either perform jumps, hops, gallops or fitness
exercises such as push ups, sit ups, Burpees, balances, jumping jacks, x-outs, and scissor
kicks)
