4. UZ PETI SPLITGRAPHIC MEĐUNARODNI GRAFIČKI BIJENALE
Peti jubilarni Splitgraphic Međunarodni grafički bijenale održava se ove 2011. godine od listopada do
prosinca dovodeći u Split recentna imena svjetske i domaće grafičke umjetnosti.
Od 2003. godine kada je održan prvi Splitgraphic neprekidno djelujemo predstavljajući međunarodne,
hrvatske i lokalne suvremene grafičare, podržavajući nove i klasične tendecije u grafici, trudeći se prije svega
predstaviti dobru i kvalitetnu grafičku umjetnost.
I u tome smo u proteklih deset godina uspjeli: osim skupnih izložaba Splitgraphica održano je preko deset
samostalnih izložbi grafičkih umjetnika poput Mirka Ilića (2003.), Masahira Fukude (2005.),Vaska Lipovca
(2007.), Dušana Džamonje (2009.), Nevenke Arbanas i Maje Franković (2009.), Miroslava Šuteja (2007.),
Kristine Restović i Ivana Kožarića (2005.), Brite Weglin (2009.), Nikole Skokandića i Janice Wong (2005.).
Jednako tako nagrade na Splitgraphicu tijekom godina dodijeljene su ponajboljim imenina grafičke
umjetnosti poput Vaska Lipovca, Masahira Fukude, Huga Besarda, Yoshia Imamure, Davide Kidd, Basila
C. Franka, Nevenke Arbanas i Maje Franković, Mirjane Vodopije, Janice Wong, Brite Weglin, Hishasija
Kurachija.
Tema ili koncept samih izložbi održanih tijekom Splitgraphica se mijenjao tijekom godina. Koncept ili tema
prvog Splitgraphica 2003. bila je Dioklecijanova palača izabrana kao nastavak splitske grafičke tradicije.
Željeli smo povezati Splitgraphic s grafičkom prošlošću grada i slavnom i utjecajnom knjigom britanca
Roberta Adama koji u osamnaestom stoljeću posvetio knjigu arhitekturi Dioklecijanove palače i prikazao je
na grafikama Charlesa L. Clérisseaua.
Drugi Splitgraphic je uspostavio temu dijaloga kao temeljnu ideju koja se od tada provlači kroz sve izložbe
Splitgraphic bijenala. Tijekom drugog Splitgraphica održan je niz izložbi s konceptom dijaloga među
umjetnicima različitih umjetničkih preokupacija, grafičkih tehnika ili pak generacija: Kristina Restović –
Ivan Kožarić (galerija Konzervatorskog zavoda), Sandra Mateljan – Marko Pogačnik (Etnografski muzej),
Nikola Skokandić – Janice Wong (galerija Konzervatorskog zavoda), skupne izložbe dijalog talijanske i
japanske grafike (Muzej grada Splita) i hrvatskih i američkih fotografa (Fotoklub Split).
Treći Splitgraphic 2007. godine je bio u znaku dijaloga ženskih rukopisa tj. grafičarki čiji su radovi zauzimali
oko dvije trećine skupne izložbe. Na trećem Splitgraphicu je utemeljena i Nagrada za mlade umjetnike.
Proteklih godina smo izlagali, podržavali i nagrađivali mlade i još neafirmirane hrvatske umjetnike što je
jedan od glavnih ciljeva bijenala.1

5. Četvrti Splitgraphic 2009. osmišljen je kao dijalog i sučeljavanje različitih grafičkih tehnika propitivanja
medija grafike u suvremenim umjetničkim tendencijama, te su osim skupne izložbe organizirane i tri
samostalne izložbe (Dijalog Nevenke Arbanas i Maje Franković, izložba Brite Weglin i izložba Dušana
Džamonje). Jedan od vrhunaca Splitgraphica je svakako i retrospektivna izložba grafika i crteža Dušana
Džamonje u Staroj gradskoj vijećnici. Splitgraphic 2009. je ujedno i bio najveći dotada što samo govori o
važnosti manifestacije i razini priznanja koje Splitgraphic bijenale stekao.
Osim dijaloga umjetnika i grafičkih tehnika Splitgraphic je uvijek tražio i dijalog gradskih izložbenih
prostora, jedan je razlog nedostatak vlastitog prostora za djelovanje, a drugi je važnost afirmacije i uspostave
urbanog dijaloga splitskih izložbenih prostora. Postavljanjem izložbi u različite galerijske prostore tijekom
trajanja Splitgraphica uspostavljali smo dijalog i povezanost unutar gradskih struktura “zaposjedajući” ih
grafikama. Tako su se samostalne i skupne izložbe odvijale u: galeriji Konzervatorskog zavoda, Muzeju grada
Splita, Etnografskom muzeju, galeriji Emanuela Vidovića, Staroj gradskoj vijećnici, galeriji Loggia Pučkog
otvorenog učilišta, galeriji Studio Naranča.
Na peti Splitgraphic bijenale se prijavio još veći broj umjetnika, brojimo 205 prijava za skupnu izložbu. Novina
koju smo uveli petim Splitgraphicom jest ONLINE Splitgraphic prijava umjetnika i izložba njihovih radova
na internetskim stranicama Splitgraphica, te mogućnost glasanja za iste radove što je nagrađeno novom
Nagradom Umjetnika – umjetnici i posjetitelji glasuju i određuju dobitnika nagrade. Osim skupne izložbe
u Staroj gradskoj vijećnici na kojoj je izloženo 60 autora koje je odabrao stručni žiri, u sklopu V jubilarnog
Splitgraphica će na samostalnoj izložbi izlagati u Staroj gradskoj vijećnici i Hugo Besard dobitnik Grand prix
nagrade 2009. godine. Značaj broja prijavljenih umjetnika i dolaska u Split jednog od najpoznatijih grafičkih
umjetnika današnjice sa trideset i četiri međunarodne nagrade daje nam priznanje za dosadašnji rad. Ovim
kratkim pregledom povijesti Splitgraphic bijenala želimo potvrditi neosporni značaj manifestcije za kulturni
život grada kao jedinoga međunarodnoga likovnoga događaja u Splitu.
Peti Splitgraphic kreće ove godine s idejom nenametanja kustoske koncepcije grafičkim radovima, već im
daje slobodu da egzistiraju bez upisivanja značenja u prostoru. Poštovali smo suverenitet umjetnika kao
primarnog proizvođača umjetničkog djela. Konceptom bez koncepta i postavom izložbe želimo naglasiti naš
odabir uvijek za dobru grafiku, za kvalitetnu autorsku grafiku i takvu je predstaviti publici. Ne želimo vam
reći što da gledate, što je vidljivo, ne želimo vam stvoriti kontekst, ne želimo definirati nečiju umjetničku
produkciju. Otkrijte to sami, uživajte u dobrim grafikama, peti Splitgraphic bijenale je u dijalogu s vama.

6. FIFTH SPLITGRAPHIC INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC ART BIENNIAL
The fifth jubilee Splitgraphic International Graphic Art Biennial is taking place from October to December
2011. Splitgraphic biennial is showing contemporary international and national graphic artists.
Since 2003, when the first Splitgraphic biennial was organized, we have been continually working on
presenting international, Croatian and local printmakers; supporting new and classical tendencies in graphic
art and above all aiming to exhibit good quality prints.
And we have succeeded in doing so in the last ten years: in addition to group exhibitions Splitgraphic
organized over ten solo-exhibitions of graphic artists such as Mirko Ilić (2003), Masahiro Fukuda (2005),
Vasko Lipovac (2007), Dušan Džamonja (2009), Nevenka Arbanas and Maja Franković (2009), Miroslav
Šutej (2007), Kristina Restović and Ivan Kožarić (2005), Brita Weglin (2009), Nikola Skokandić and Janice
Wong (2005).
The Spligraphic awards were received by the renowned names in graphic art: Vasko Lipovac, Masahiro
Fukuda, Hugo Besard, Yoshio Imamura, Davida Kidd, Basil C. Frank, Nevenka Arbanas and Maja Franković,
Mirjana Vodopija, Janice Wong, Brita Weglin, Hishasi Kurachi.
Idea or concept of the exhibitions during Splitgraphic biennial has changed over the years. The concept of
the first Splitgraphic in 2003 was the Diocletian’s palace that was chosen as a continuation of Split’s graphic
tradition. We wanted to link Splitgraphic biennial with city’s printmaking history and with the famous and
influential book by British architect Robert Adam. He dedicated this book to the architecture of Diocletian’s
palace in the eighteenth century, and published it with the engravings made by Charles L. Clérisseau.
The second Splitgraphic introduced the theme of dialogue as a fundamental idea that has been since then
the underlining thought of all Splitgraphic exhibitions. During second Splitgraphic a series of exhibitions
was organized with the concept of dialogue among artists of different artistic genres, printing techniques
or even generations: Kristina Restović – Ivan Kožarić (Gallery Of Art Conservation Institute), Sandra
Mateljan – Marko Pogačnik (Ethnographic Museum Split), Nikola Skokandić – Janice Wong (Gallery Of
Art Conservation Institute), group exhibitions of Italian and Japanese printmakers (The Split City Museum)
and Croatian and American photographers (Fotoklub Split).
The third Splitgraphic in 2007 was based on an idea of a female printmakers dialogue whose prints made
two-thirds of the group exhibition. The Award for Young Artists was founded during the third Splitgraphic.
Over the past years we have exhibited, supported and awarded young and unknown Croatian artists and
made it one of Splitgraphic’s primary goals.1

7. The fourth Splitgraphic in 2009 was developed as a dialogue and confrontation of printing techniques
and questioning of graphic media in contemporary artistic tendencies. Apart from the group exhibition
we organized three solo exhibitions (Dialogue Nevenka Arbanas and Maja Franković, exhibition of Brita
Weglin and the exhibition of Dušan Džamonja). The retrospective exhibition of Dušan Džamonja’s prints
and drawings was one of the Splitgraphic’s highest points. Splitgraphic in 2009 was up that moment the
largest one, which signifies the importance of the event and the acclaim Splitgraphic gained.
Splitgraphic encouraged not only a dialogue among artists and printmaking techniques but also a dialogue
of exhibition venues, one of the reasons being that we still lack our own space to work in, and the other
the importance of connecting and establishing dialogue among city’s exhibition spaces. By installing
exhibitions in various galleries during Splitgraphic biennials we created a dialogue and a connection among
city structures “invading” them with graphic art. We had group and solo exhibitions in: Gallery Of Art
Conservation Institute, The City Museum Of Split, Ethnographic Museum, Emanuel Vidović Gallery, Old
City Hall, Gallery Loggia of POUS, gallery Studio Naranča.
Even more artists applied for fifth Splitgraphic, we had 205 applications for the group exhibition. The
new feature of fifth Splitgraphic is the ONLINE part of the biennial and the online print exhibition on
Splitgraphic’s web site. The new Artist’s award is introduced: the award is won by the print with most votes
– artists and visitors of our web site vote for the best work. Sixty artists were chosen and are exhibited on the
group Splitgraphic exhibition in Old City Hall and during November artist Hugo Besard, winner of Grand
Prix 2009, will exhibit his prints in the same venue. The number of artists that have applied and a visit of
one of today’s most renowned graphic artists who has won thirty-four international awards acknowledge
our work so far. With this short history of Splitgraphic biennial we would like to confirm the unquestionable
significance of manifestation for the city’s cultural life as the only international art event in Split.
The fifth Splitgraphic this year promotes the idea of not imposing curatorial concept to graphic artworks,
but is giving them freedom to exist without assigning meaning in space. We have respected the sovereignty
of the artist as the primary producer of work of art. We would like to emphasize our consistent preference for
good printmaking, for quality artistic prints with the concept without concept and the installation and this is
what we would like to present to our audience. We do not want to tell you what to look at, what is visible, we
do not want to create frame and context; we do not want to define someone’s art production. We want you
to discover it yourself, to enjoy graphic art and to have a dialogue with fifth Splitgraphic.

8. GRAFIKE SPLITA I GRAFIKA U SPLITU
Grafika kao pratnja tiskanog djela, kao dokumentacija, a zatim i kao zasebno likovno ostvarenje, razvila se
nakon pojave tiska, osobito od šesnaestog stoljeća nadalje. Mogućnošću umnažanja uspješno je zamijenila
unikatne slike i crteže i ubrzo postala popularna, bilo kao pratnja tiskane knjige, bilo kao samostalni otisnuti
list. Nakon ranih drvoreza razvile su se ostale grafičke tehnike, od kojih su bakrorez i bakropis bile u prvim
stoljećima najuobičajenije.
Grafika u Splitu počinje s prvim književnim splitskim, a ujedno i hrvatskim, djelom, s izdanjima Judite
Marka Marulića (1450-1524). U tom spjevu, koji upozorava na tursku opasnost i grafičke su ilustracije borbe
s Turcima pod zidinama grada, u kojemu možemo prepoznati utvrđenja Splita. Potpisane su inicijalom M.
Znajući da je pjesnik i mislioc Marulić bio i slikar, možemo pretpostaviti da je on ujedno bio i prvi splitski,
i hrvatski, grafičar, iako za to nemamo pouzdanih dokaza.
Daljnju istaknutu ulogu prikaza Splita, samoga grada ili s okolicom, nalazimo u grafičkim listovima ili
knjižicama (albumima), bilo zasebnim grada Splita, bilo skupnima, u portolanima šesnaestog i sedamnaestog
stoljeća, tekstovnim i likovnim upustvima brodarima o lukama kojima su plovili, u našem slučaju jadranskima
(G.F. Camutio, V. Coronelli i drugi).
I zasebni grafički listovi su se tada umnažali i širili Europom prikazujući istaknuta povijesna zbivanja, tako
je u svijetu slavljeno osvajanje turskog Klisa 1657. godine.
Koliko je presudna bila uloga grafičkih prikaza u znastvenim i u putopisnim djelima prošlih stoljeća, dokazuju
grafički listovi u monumentalnoj knjizi britanskog arhitekta Roberta Adama o Dioklecijanovoj palači u
Splitu (1764.) ili u reprezentativnoj knjizi J. Lavallea putopisa Dalmacijom, s grafikama Splita rađenima na
temelju velikih akvarela L.F. Cassasa (1802.). Otada grafičke listove Splita i Dioklecijanove palače nalazimo
u brojnim putopisnim i znastvenim izdanjima europskih autora.
U daljnjem razvitku tiskarske tehnike koja uz tekstove omogućava i tiskanje ilustracija, razvija se grafika i
kao zasebna grana slikarstva, u različitim tehnikama, koristeći pogodnost umnažanja likovng djela. I splitski
su se slikari istaknuli, više ili manje, na tom polju. Tako je splitske povijesne ili pučke varoške motive slikar
Anđeo Uvodić umnažao u stotinama primjeraka, pa su se nalazili gotovo u svakom splitskom građanskom
domu.
I brojni inozemni putnici prikazivali su Split, a osobito motive Dioklecijanove palače, u raznim putopisnim
izdanjima ili u zasebnim listovima, naročito u devetnaestom stoljeću.
U minulom međuratnom razdoblju usporedo s izrazito staleškom splitskom Prvomajskom izložbom, u
težnji odabira likovnih vrijednosti osnovan je 1969. Splitski salon, a sa željom šireg kruga sudionika i 1974.

9. Bijenale suvremene hrvatske grafike, koji se održavao svake druge godine do rata 1992., znatno pridonoseći
kvaliteti likovnog života u Splitu. Međunarodni grafički Biennale Split nastavlja tu tradiciju, proširujući je
na predstavljanje ne samo mjesnih i nacionalnih, nego i međunarodnih umjetnika.

10. SPLIT IN GRAPHIC ART AND GRAPHIC ART IN SPLIT
After the appearance of the printing press, especially from the sixteenth century onward, the graphic art
evolved illustrating printed texts and documenting them, while later it became an independent artistic
form.. Thanks to the possibility of multiplification, prints successfully replaced one-off paintings and
drawings and soon became popular, either as a part of printed books or just printed on a paper. After the
first woodcuts other printing techniques developed, copper engraving and etching being the most common
at the beginning.
Printmaking in Split began with the first literary work in Split, and Croatia, with the editions of Judita
(Judith) by Marko Marulić (1450-1524). In this epic, which warns of the threat by the Turks, there are
graphic illustrations of battles with the Turks under the city walls which we recognize as the fortifications
of the city of Split. These illustrations are signed with the initial M. Knowing that the poet and philosopher
Marulić was also a painter, we can assume that he was also the first graphic artist in Split and Croatia,
although we do not have any solid evidence to confirm this.
Further important presentations of Split, the city proper or with the surrounding area, we find in the prints
or booklets (albums) - either separate of the town of Split or overall - dating from the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries used as textual and visual directions to the mariners that sailed to the ports of the
Adriatic sea (G.F. Camutio, V. Coronelli and others).
At that time separate prints depicting major historical events were also printed and spread throughout
Europe. The seize of the fort of Klis and the defeat of the Turks in 1657 was celebrated all over the world.
The pivotal role of graphic illustrations in the scientific and travel books from the past centuries is proven
both by the prints in the monumental book on Diocletian’s palace in Split by the British architect Robert
Adam (1764) and in the outstanding travelogue through Dalmatia by J. Lavalle, containing prints of Split
based on the magnificent aquarelles by L.F. Cassas (1802). Since that time we find graphic presentations of
Split and Diocletian’s palace in numerous travel and scientific editions by European authors.
In the further development of the printing techniques which made possible the printing of the illustrations
along with the texts, printmaking evolved also as a separate branch of painting, using various techniques
and benefiting from the multiplication of artworks. The painters of Split more or less excelled in that field
as well. Thus, the painter Anđeo Uvodić multiplied in hundreds of copies the historical scenes from Split or
folk motives from Varoš. His prints could be found in almost every middle-class home in Split.
Numerous foreign travellers also depicted Split, particularly the motives of Diocletian’s palace, in various
travel editions or as separate prints, notably in the nineteenth century.

11. In the period between the two wars, parallel to the existence of the extremely guild oriented annual May
Day exhibition, the exhibition of the Split Salon was founded in 1969 with a view to the selection of valuable
artworks and an increased number of participants. In 1974 the Biennial of Croatian Contemporary
Graphic Art was established and held every two years until the war in 1992, contributing extensively to
the quality of cultural life in Split. The International Graphic Art Biennial Split continues this tradition,
presenting not only local and national artists, but international artists as well.

Hugo Besard rođen je 24. veljače 1955. godine u Etterbeeku (Bruxelles/Belgija). Od 1995. godine je profesor
grafike na ARTESIS, Akademiji Primjenjenih Umjetnosti Sveučilišta u Antwerpenu.
