A’laa El Sherbiny: Co-founder & CFO
Graduated from Indiana University School of Law with MS in International
Business Law, A’laa earned the Vital Voices GROW fellowship which is a highly
competitive and internationally-renowned one-year accelerator program for
women owners of SMEs.
6. OUR VISION&MISSION
Our vision: Reshape Alternative Fuels, by positioning them as a
leading energy source, not just a “second option”.
Our mission: Increase the commercial value of wastes through
developing innovative solutions.
7. THE PROBLEM
Egypt generates annually 35 to 38 million tons of waste, and is steadily
increasing annually by 15%.
Approximately 20 million of the waste are not collected due to several different
reasons, but mostly for lacking of waste valorization.
However, waste can be transformed from a huge challenge to a great
opportunity, through suitable technology and know-how.
8. THE SOLUTIONS
Waste can be used as replacement of fossil fuels or raw materials in energy
intensive industries (EII) . This process is called
Co-processing : Material Recycling + Energy recovery
For example at the extreme high temperature of a cement kiln every component
of waste is fully recovered: combustible ones are burnt, releasing heat to
process, while non combustible ones contained in the waste become part
of product substituting raw materials.
Therefore, Alternative Fuels is one of the best solution for disposal of wastes that
otherwise can’t be recovered.
9. BUSINESS IDEA
BioEnergy operates in three different but related areas.
Waste to
Energy

10. WASTE TO FUELS
BioEnergy produces Alternative Fuels for energy-intensive industries (EII) derived
from different kind of waste:
1) Biomass: fuel produced by shredding agriculture waste
such as rice straw and tree trimmings.
2) Refuse Derive Fuel (RDF): RDF is a fuel produced by
shredding and dehydrating rejects from MSWs.
3) Industrial, oil and sewage sludge: fuel produced through
dehydrating of different kind of sludge.
4) Tires Derive Fuels (TDF): fuel produced by shredding
end-of-life tires.
11. BIOMASS – PRODUCTION MODEL
BioEnergy processes agriculture waste in several collection points across
Egyptian governorates, through our mobile facility, composed by two mobile
shredders.
We produce shredded biomass derived from different kind of agriculture waste:
o Tree trimming
o Deforestation waste
o Urban gardening waste

13. RDF – PRODUCTION MODEL
BioEnergy produces RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuels) through solid partnerships with
several recycling facilities across Egyptian governorates.
After the selection of rejects at the recycling facilities, our production process is
divided in two macro-phases:
Mobility is the key of our success:
Reduction of logistic costs
Consistent supply: tackling inefficient collection of waste.
1
• Semi mobile equipment:
first shredding of
materials at different
recycling facilities.
2
• Final processing of waste
at our stationary facility.
14. RDF CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY

Sorting of valuable materials (metals, glass,
paper, PET, etc.), organic fraction, and rejects
Semi-mobile primary shredder:
Volumetric reduction up to 150 mm
Windshifter:
Separation heavy and light fraction
Secondary shredder:
Volumetric reduction up to 30 mm
17. TDF– PRODUCTION MODEL
Recently BioEnergy started to supply TDF (Tires derived fuels).
BioEnergy has the state of-the-art solutions which guarantee a clear cutting of shredded
tires.

20. HAZARDOUS WASTE
In May 2016, BioEnergy signed a partnership with Polyeco, a world-renowned
waste management company, specialized in hazardous waste.
The scope of the partnership was the participation to the international tender -
EEAA/ICB/TS/2016/1 – launched by the Ministry of Environment (EEAA-
POP’s Unit) and financed by World Bank.
The scope of the tender is the repackaging, shipment and disposal of around
660 tons of a dangerous pesticides (Lindane) stockpiled in two different
sites - Al-Adabeya port and El-Saff – since 1997.
The partnership between Polyeco and BioEnergy was awarded by the World
Bank and EEAA-POP’s Unit for the implementation of the project.
The works are just started, with the collection of material samples.
