What is a supercapacitor (SC)?
• Supercapacitors (SC’s) are energy storages having
similarities with both batteries and conventional
capacitors.
• Unlike batteries, SC’s store electrical energy, not
chemical energy. Unlike capacitors SC’s contain
moving ions.
• Supercapacitors have many names: electrochemical
capacitor (EC Capacitor), Electric double-layer
capacitor (EDLC), ultracapacitor, ... All meaning the
same thing. 2
Difference between a supercapacitor and a
conventional capacitor
• Conventional capacitor has a solid dielectric and
current collectors smooth surfaces.
• Supercapacitor has rough electrode surfaces and a
liquid dielectric.

Why supercapacitors……?
• Power is the amount of energy used or produced in a
certain amount of time. Batteries have a higher
energy density (they store more energy per unit mass)
but supercapacitors have a higher power density
(they can release energy more quickly).
• They can do large work in less time
(eg: In power start and in acceleration of vehicles,
upcoming technology of trams etc…)

Battery Supercapacitor
• The cycle life of battery
cells is restricted to roughly
one thousand
discharge/recharge cycles
• Electron transfer occurs
across the two electrodes
with the electrolyte as the
medium transfer
• The charge storage by
redox reaction occurs in the
battery
• Low power density
• The cycle life of battery
cells is about a million
times
• 100 times shorter than the
conventional
electrochemical cell
• Redox reaction across the
double layers
• Functions over a larger
range of temperature
• Higher power density

 Important characteristics of a supercapacitor:
• Supercapacitor can be fully charged and
discharged in seconds
• SC’s can be charged and discharged even up to a
million times.
• SC’s have very low energy densities vs. batteries; -
SC’s have very high self-discharge vs. batteries.
• Almost linear voltage curves enables very
accurate state of charge estimations

How supercapacitor works
• In discharged state all the ions are
distributed randomly within the cell.
• In charged state all the positive ions travel to
the negative terminal and vice versa.
• The higher the carbon electrode surface area
is, the higher the cell capacitance is.

Cycle behavior of a supercapacitor
• Cell capacitance 420F : Charge and discharge current: 4,2A.
• Room temperature ~22 °C.
• Entropy effect is noticeable.

Main components in general
• Thin aluminum foils, which are attached with
“electrode paste”
Electrode paste
• Carbon coating with high surface area
• Conductive carbon
• Adhesives
Rest of the components
• Porous separator (plastic or paper)
• Liquid electrolyte
• Casing

Applications now and future possibilities
• Regenerative braking
• Releasing the power in acceleration
• Starting power in start-stop systems
• Regulate voltage to the energy grid
• Capture power when lowering loads and assisting
when loads are lifted
• Back-up power in any application where quick
discharge ( or charge) is required
• Can be used in transport (trams, cars etc…)

Conclusion
• Supercapacitors can be used with or as alternative to
batteries
• It can be very quickly charged/discharged many number
of times (millions)
• It can be used in applications where short bursts of
energy is needed
• Capacitances from 1 Farad to hundreds of Farads or
even thousands can be made
• Voltage range can be maintained from 2-5 volts

What is a supercapacitor (SC)? • Supercapacitors (SC’s) are energy storages having similarities with both batteries and conventional capacitors. • Unlike batteries, SC’s store electrical energy, not chemical energy. Unlike capacitors SC’s contain moving ions. • Supercapacitors have many names: electrochemical capacitor (EC Capacitor), Electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), ultracapacitor, ... All meaning the same thing. 2
  • 3. Difference between a supercapacitor and a conventional capacitor • Conventional capacitor has a solid dielectric and current collectors smooth surfaces. • Supercapacitor has rough electrode surfaces and a liquid dielectric. 3
  • 4. Why supercapacitors……? • Power is the amount of energy used or produced in a certain amount of time. Batteries have a higher energy density (they store more energy per unit mass) but supercapacitors have a higher power density (they can release energy more quickly). • They can do large work in less time (eg: In power start and in acceleration of vehicles, upcoming technology of trams etc…) 4

Battery Supercapacitor • The cycle life of battery cells is restricted to roughly one thousand discharge/recharge cycles • Electron transfer occurs across the two electrodes with the electrolyte as the medium transfer • The charge storage by redox reaction occurs in the battery • Low power density • The cycle life of battery cells is about a million times • 100 times shorter than the conventional electrochemical cell • Redox reaction across the double layers • Functions over a larger range of temperature • Higher power density 6
  • 7.  Important characteristics of a supercapacitor: • Supercapacitor can be fully charged and discharged in seconds • SC’s can be charged and discharged even up to a million times. • SC’s have very low energy densities vs. batteries; - SC’s have very high self-discharge vs. batteries. • Almost linear voltage curves enables very accurate state of charge estimations 7
  • 8. How supercapacitor works • In discharged state all the ions are distributed randomly within the cell. • In charged state all the positive ions travel to the negative terminal and vice versa. • The higher the carbon electrode surface area is, the higher the cell capacitance is. 8

  • 11. Cycle behavior of a supercapacitor • Cell capacitance 420F : Charge and discharge current: 4,2A. • Room temperature ~22 °C. • Entropy effect is noticeable. 11
  • 12. Main components in general • Thin aluminum foils, which are attached with “electrode paste” Electrode paste • Carbon coating with high surface area • Conductive carbon • Adhesives Rest of the components • Porous separator (plastic or paper) • Liquid electrolyte • Casing 12

Applications now and future possibilities • Regenerative braking • Releasing the power in acceleration • Starting power in start-stop systems • Regulate voltage to the energy grid • Capture power when lowering loads and assisting when loads are lifted • Back-up power in any application where quick discharge ( or charge) is required • Can be used in transport (trams, cars etc…) 13

Conclusion • Supercapacitors can be used with or as alternative to batteries • It can be very quickly charged/discharged many number of times (millions) • It can be used in applications where short bursts of energy is needed • Capacitances from 1 Farad to hundreds of Farads or even thousands can be made • Voltage range can be maintained from 2-5 volts 14
