Sequencing refers to a series of items or events
occurring in a specific order. Fun, sequencing activities
done at home with your child will prepare him/her to
recognize the sequence of events in stories. Sequencing
is a precursor to retelling stories and predicting what
might happen next.
Place 4 Items in Sequential Order From Left to Right
To sequence items in the correct order, children need to
understand and use target words: first, second, third, last,
next, and after.
Use Target Words to Describe the Sequential
Order of the Items
The large red square is first. The blue triangle is second. The yellow
circle is third and the red rectangle is last.
or
The red square is first. The blue triangle is next to the red square. The
yellow circle is after the blue triangle and the red rectangle is last.
Gather Items to Sequence
Make the activity fun! Have your child sequence toys and
other items according to your directions. Begin by gathering
your child’s favorite toys and items from around the house.
Choose Items that are Different in Color, Shape, and Size
Have Your Child Sequence Toys and Other Items
According to Your Directions.
Place the blue ball
first, and the bear
second.
Place the car
third, next to the
bear.
Place the timer last.

Guide your child by
asking what would
happen first, next….
Have your child arrange
the cards in the correct
order. Then have him/her
explain the order.

Move from using cards to asking questions. Ask
your child - What happened first in the
story, next, last?
OR
What did Goldilocks do first – eat the porridge or fall
asleep in Baby Bear’s bed? If your child doesn’t
know the answer, help your child find the answer in
the story.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Pictures may be used instead of
sentences to answer questions.

Comprehension - Teaching Pre-Kindergarten Children Sequencing

  • 2. Sequencing- Comprehension Focus first last Sequencing refers to a series of items or events occurring in a specific order. Fun, sequencing activities done at home with your child will prepare him/her to recognize the sequence of events in stories. Sequencing is a precursor to retelling stories and predicting what might happen next.
  • 3. Place 4 Items in Sequential Order From Left to Right To sequence items in the correct order, children need to understand and use target words: first, second, third, last, next, and after.
  • 4. Use Target Words to Describe the Sequential Order of the Items The large red square is first. The blue triangle is second. The yellow circle is third and the red rectangle is last. or The red square is first. The blue triangle is next to the red square. The yellow circle is after the blue triangle and the red rectangle is last.
  • 5. Gather Items to Sequence Make the activity fun! Have your child sequence toys and other items according to your directions. Begin by gathering your child’s favorite toys and items from around the house.
  • 6. Choose Items that are Different in Color, Shape, and Size
  • 7. Have Your Child Sequence Toys and Other Items According to Your Directions. Place the blue ball first, and the bear second. Place the car third, next to the bear. Place the timer last.
  • 8. Sequencing Pictures Cards Sequence Picture Cards Using Target Words Guide your child by asking what would happen first, next…. Have your child arrange the cards in the correct order. Then have him/her explain the order.
  • 9. Sequencing Photographs Sequence Photographs Using Target Words first next then finally
  • 10. Bridging Sequencing Items to Sequencing Events of a Story Move from using cards to asking questions. Ask your child - What happened first in the story, next, last? OR What did Goldilocks do first – eat the porridge or fall asleep in Baby Bear’s bed? If your child doesn’t know the answer, help your child find the answer in the story.
