Donne, Bici e... Varesotto «Il ciclismo? Non è roba da donne». Lo diceva Alfredo Binda, campione di un ciclismo epico e al limite dell’umano: e il destino ha voluto che proprio a lui, all’eroe di Cittiglio, venisse intitolata la gara più importante del ciclismo femminile in Italia. A far la rivoluzione, a Cittiglio, piccolo paese della provincia di Varese, ci pensò una giovane maestra elementare, ai primi anni Cinquanta: fu la prima donna ad acquistare una bicicletta e a usarla per spostarsi in paese. E a nulla valse l’ira del parroco, che tuonava dal pulpito e gridava allo scandalo. Ormai, la rivoluzione era cominciata e non c’era verso di arrestarla. Poi, sempre nel Varesotto, si disputarono le prime gare vere e proprie: erano gli anni Sessanta e, le corse femminili, radunavano grandi folle di curiosi, ma anche tanti contestatori benpensanti. «Tornate ai fornelli! Andate a fare la calzetta!» gridavano non pochi scalmanati, tra il pubblico. Tuttavia, la rivoluzione proseguì, con il braccio muscoloso da operaia e passista di Florinda Parenti, ciclista pioniera, che durante una competizione in Valcuvia, mise a tacere uno a caso tra i facinorosi scandalizzati: a colpi di pompa di bicicletta sui denti. Oggi, in provincia di Varese, il ciclismo è una realtà importante, che ha finalmente conquistato un intero territorio. L’immagine di una ragazza in bicicletta è simbolo di bellezza, è un piacere che allarga i cuori: in passato non era così. Un documento di nove pagine del Governo Italiano diviso in tre punti e una conclusione. Il primo punto è intitolato: "A Fragile Recovery: Challenges and Opportunities " Il secondo punto è intitolato: "A Comprehensive Policy Mix". Dove si descrive un complesso di misure che realizzino una politica espansiva al posto di quella di austerità e rigore fin qui imposta dalla Commissione (e dalla Germania). Bisogna aumentare le capacità di crescita, sostenere la politica monetaria della Bce, varare una politica fiscale europea che tenda a riequilibrare le politiche nazionali aiutando la loro flessibilità in modo da ristabilire tra loro un equilibrio attualmente molto alterato. Completare l'Unione Bancaria ed estendere le garanzie in favore dei depositi bancari dei singoli Paesi. Fare intervenire l'Europa anche nelle politiche sociali e sindacali dei singoli Paesi, sempre al fine di rafforzare l'integrazione europea ed una politica di crescita e di equità. Rafforzare i confini europei verso il resto del mondo e smantellare al più presto possibile i confini interni ripristinati in molti Paesi violando il patto di Schengen. Dunque una politica comune dell'immigrazione più volte chiesta dall'Italia ma finora inesistente. Il punto tre del documento rappresenta, con un titolo altamente significativo, lo sbocco istituzionale della politica europeista delineata nelle pagine precedenti: "From the Short-term to the Long-term View"

Il sistema di sorveglianza OKkio alla SALUTE, promosso dal Ministero della Salute - CCM (Centro per il controllo e la prevenzione delle malattie), coordinato dall’Istituto superiore di sanità, in collaborazione con il Ministero dell’Istruzione dell’Università e della Ricerca, le Regioni e le Aziende Sanitarie Locali, fornisce il quadro epidemiologico aggiornato della distribuzione dell’eccesso ponderale e dei comportamenti a rischio nei bambini della scuola primaria, con un dettaglio nazionale, regionale e aziendale, favorendo la pianificazione e la valutazione di interventi efficaci, in attuazione del programma “Guadagnare salute” e nell’ambito del Piano Nazionale della Prevenzione. Sono stati presentati il 21 gennaio a Roma presso il Ministero della Salute, Auditorium Biagio D’Alba, i risultati della raccolta dati Okkio alla Salute 2014. Il sistema di sorveglianza nazionale raccoglie informazioni sulla variabilità geografica e l’evoluzione nel tempo dello stato ponderale dei bambini delle scuole primarie, sugli stili alimentari, l’abitudine all’esercizio fisico e le eventuali iniziative scolastiche favorenti la sana alimentazione e l’attività fisica.

TerraVIVA aims at helping and stimulating people to rediscover the history and beauty of the Olona Valley often hidden under fallacies and false beliefs. TerraVIVA looks at its region, geography, history and traditions with curiosity, greed, interest and passion. By promoting our culture, the surrounding areas and their heritage, by raising the attention of citizens, shopkeepers and restaurateurs on this topics we will be able to make our Valley more and more “appealing” not only to our tourists but also to the inhabitants of the surrounding cities and the citizenry itself. TerraVIVA is a new, free, coloured guidebook which combines new technologies with old tools: on the one side it is multimedia, free downloadable and accessible on the Net; on the other side it is graphically captivating, multilingual (IT, EN, DE and RU) and provided with an easy-to-use pocket-sized map. A condensation of 68 pages which allows us to relive and experience again the places where we were born, the traditions we grew up with and the recipes which warmed our heart... but it is also, and above all, a starting point, an incentive to promote us, to broaden our culinary and geographical knowledge in order to build closer relationships and connections between our region and people who work and live in it. Industrial Archaeology, Valmorea railway, Visconti and gentlemen chefs, local and vegan recipes as well as places to visit in each town, restaurants and shops: these are just a few things that you will nd in our guidebook. So, all you can do now is discover and enjoy it... the Olona Valley I mean, not the guidebook!

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The same food on the plate of the other guests is more desirable. Well, we don’t think so, let us explain why! TerraVIVA aims at helping and stimulating people to rediscover the history and beauty of the Olona Valley often hidden under fallacies and false beliefs. The project has been made possible thanks to the financial support of the Chamber of Commerce of Varese and the Associazione Commercianti of Busto Arsizio but, above all, thanks to the eight Municipalities of the Olona Valley which had the willpower and vision to join together and create DIVO: Distretto del Commercio del Medio Olona (Trade District of the Middle Olona). With this aim in mind, TerraVIVA looks at its region, geography, history and traditions with curiosity, greed, interest and passion. Cairate, Castellanza, Fagnano Olona, Gorla Maggiore, Gorla Minore, Marnate, Olgiate Olona and Solbiate Olona, the main characters of this guidebook, are reread and rediscovered both from a tourism and culinary point of view and as it happens with a tasty menu, whose dishes can be savoured andknown thoroughly, past and sense experiences will seduce you and stick in your memory. Un condensato di 68 pagine che permette di riappropriarci e di riassaporare i luoghi nei quali siamo nati, le tradizioni che ci hanno cresciuto e le ricette che ci hanno scaldato il cuore… ma anche e, soprattutto, uno spunto, una spinta a valorizzarci, ad ampliare la nostra cultura gastronomica e geografica in modo da allacciare rapporti e legami sempre più forti tra il territorio, chi ci lavora e chi lo vive. Archeologia industriale, ferrovia della Valmorea, Visconti e cuochi gentiluomini, ricette tipiche e ricette vegan, cosa vedere e dove mangiare o acquistare Comune per Comune, sono solo alcune delle cose che troverete in questa guida. Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
