I. Brief history of Rombo district
Rombo District is one of the seven districts of the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It
is bordered to the north and east by Kenya, to the west by the Siha District and Hai District, and
to the south by the District. The Rombo District contains a large portion of Park. Their activities
is agriculture activities, and are developed in education, and in highest level of Christianity
The staple food of the Chagga people is bananas. Bananas are also used to make beer,
their main beverage. The Chagga plant a variety of food crops, including bananas, millet, maize
(corn), beans, and cassava. They also keep cattle, goats, and sheep. Due to limited land holdings
and grazing areas, most Chagga people today are forced to purchase meat from butcher shops.
Pregnant women eat a diet of milk, sweet potatoes, fat, yams, and butter; these are considered
female foods. Bananas and beer are considered male and are not to be eaten by pregnant women.
According to the Seventh Day Adventist Church History, Rombo is the among of the
oldest district which is located in North East Tanzania conference Organized 1903 and
reorganized 1960, under Southern Tanzania Union Mission(STU). Seventh day Adventist
message inter in Rombo on 1966 under 5 families who were working in soul mill Rongai and
Kamwanga forest. On 1980 Adventist message enter at Rombo Mkuu, and church member were
5 families who were workers on (Rombo district) including District commissioner, the same year
Rombo district enagleted to be district including Himo and Marangu, under Pr P.Jonas. On 1989
Himo and Marangu joined together to be the part of Moshi District, and Rombo remain to be
head quarters of the district. Until now is only (6) Pastors who serves from Rombo district
begun.
14 -28 February 2016, Rombo Mkuu was having a great Crusade where Pastor DAVID
WANANI KIRANGI Who is a Lecture at the University of Arusha was preaching there, also
TUCASA choir from the university of Arusha was serving to Jesus in different ways, pastors in
training also was serving, 35 people accepted Jesus Christ to be their personal saviors through
baptism .Glory to God
Today Rombo District is having (532) church members, (7) churches, (6) church
branchescompanies, (24)small groups and 2 ray preachers, this show that since 1966 up to 2016
the rate increase of church members per year is approximately to be 11 which is equal to 64.
According to the 2012 census, the population of the Rombo District was 260, 963, this is equal to
say in 490 people you found only 1 church member, this is equal to 0.2% 0f the total population
II. Challenges facing Rombo District.
Ecumenism
The terms "ecumenism" and "ecumenical" come from the Greek οἰκουμένη (oikoumene), which
means "the whole inhabited world", and was historically used with specific reference to
the Roman Empire. The ecumenical vision comprises both the search for the visible unity of the
Church (Ephesians 4:3) and the "whole inhabited earth" (Matthew 24:14) as the concern of all
Christians.1
1 Wikipedia FreeEncyclopedia “Definition Of Ecumenism”
Is any effort aimed at the unity of Christians throughout the world. Most often, it specifically
means the visible unity of Christian churches in some form.
In Rombo district the catholic church developed and expanded more and more because of this,
there is small power within believers wish made them to be strong and grow frequently and
somehow are called home of Catholics.
Polygamy marriage.
Chaggas people normally love to have more than one wife or husband, and the Bible does not
allow anyone to have polygamy, and people they know very much that this is sin, when the truth
preached to them they believe but they don’t ready to leave that polygamy marriage, thus why
they hinder them to join with the Adventist church. this is very big challenge anywhere.
Keeping the new born infants and regular church members
Statistics show that, since the church started until now there are only 532 members, but if church
members nurtured well and keeping effectively they must be more than 5000 members in the
district.
New members are not simple individuals but complicated human being. if we try to understand
new members from one aspects, there is possibility that we can leady them in long way.
Therefore we need to understand new members comprehensively through biblical, theological,
and social cultural understanding2.
Isolation for those who want to join in the church
Most of people they not ready to be baptized and joining the seventh day Adventist church
fearing that they will be isolated with their fellow believers, neighbors, friends, co workers even
hindering to do any church activities. but the seventh day church still love those people who their
church membership removed in the church book, praying with them and share together the Lords
supper.
The statistics of Roman Catholic Diocese of Moshi in Rombo district show that;
Mission begun on 1939,under Priest Allophone Mtana,by the year 1990 the church of Moshi
celebrated data show that,5680000(68%) out of 840,386,total population of Moshi diocese were
Catholics.
In 2003, out of 1053204 total population Catholics were 668,479= 63%
In 2007 total diocese of Moshi 1,065,612. Total population, Catholics were 665, 350, =62%
This simply shows that there is high rate increase of Roman Catholics in the church.
III. How people joined in the church
There is some percentage to know there relationships with the Adventist message began in
Rombo district, these will help us to know how people interested to join in the Adventist
message
Most of the people they not join because of some challenges in the church and in the local area

Some members they asked these questions
Does this church have real pastors/elders who see their primary task to be the spiritual care and
oversight of the souls of the members? In other words, just because they have powerful, biblical
preaching does not mean your individual soul will be tended to on a regular basis. Ask the
pastors. Ask other church members.3

IV. Biblical foundation of church growth
Although the Bible does not specifically address church growth, the principle of
church growth is the understanding that Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of
Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). Paul confirmed that the church has its foundation
in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). Jesus Christ is also the head of the church (Ephesians 1:18-
23) and the church’s life (John 10:10). Having said that, it should be remembered that “growth”
can be a relative term. There are different kinds of growth, some of which have nothing to do
with numbers.
A church can be alive and growing even though the number of members/attendees is not
changing. If those in the church are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus,
submitting to His will for their lives, both individually and corporately, that is a church that is
experiencing true growth. At the same time, a church can be adding to its rolls weekly, have
huge numbers, and still be spiritually stagnant.
Growth of any kind follows a typical pattern. As with a growing organism, the local church has
those who plant the seed (evangelists), those who water the seed (pastor/teachers), and others
who use their spiritual gifts for the growth of those in the local church. But note that it is God
who gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:7). Those who plant and those who water will each
receive their own reward according to their labor (1 Corinthians 3:8).

Definition of key terms
I. Church growth
“The Free Wikipedia encyclopedia” define that, Church Growth is a movement
within evangelical Christianity which aims to develop methods to grow churches based on
business marketing strategies. Various church leaders have proposed different ways to grow
churches. One prominent example is the "seeker-sensitive" approach, which aims to make
churches more accessible and sensitive to the needs of spiritual seekers.
Donald McGavran gives us three definition of church growth, (1977), says that
church-growth principle is a universal truth which, when properly interpreted and applied,
contributes significantly to the growth of churches and denominations.
Church growth is that science which investigates the nature, function and health of
the Christian church as it relates specifically to the effective implementation of God's
commission to 'make disciples of all nations’. Also continue to say
Church growth is simultaneously a theological conviction, and an applied science
which strives to combine the eternal principles of God's Word with the best insights of
contemporary social and behavioral sciences, employing, as its initial frame of reference.
However ,”Howard Culbertson” clarify according to Donald McGavran is a carefully discipline
which investigates the nature and function, planting and multiplication, heath of Christian
church, as they seek specifically to effectively implement the Lord’s great commission to make
disciples of all nations and people (Mathew 28-19-20).
White G.E (1911): The Acts Of The Apostles, says, church growth it means the church
and church members must be connected to the source of all spiritual growth, Jesus Christ.
Therefore church growth it means the multiplication of church members in the church through
depending to Jesus Christ who is head of the church.
II. Nurturing
“Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary” defines that, the care and attention
given to someone or something that is growing or develop ing
“Dictionary. Com online” also says nurturing it means
T o feed and protect:
To nurture one's offspring.
To support and encourage, as during the period of training or development; foster:
To nurture promising musicians.
To bring up; train; educate.
“The free dictionaries on line” by Farlex clarify to define that,
the action of raising or caring for offspring: the nurture of an infant.
“Cambridge dictionaries online” proceed to define that, to take care of, feed,
and protect someone or something, especially young children or plants, and help him, her, or it
to develop:
Therefore after knowing some definition of nurturing, I can say that nurturing is care ling and
encouraging the new offspring, church members within the church for church growth or
development.
III. Retention
“Business dictionary online” define that is the condition of retaining (keeping) something. "
“But Merriam-Webster leaner’s dictionary”, says the act of keeping someone or something
Therefore retention it means to keep church members in the church so that the church can
grow.
IV. Ecumenism
According to Free Wikipedia Encyclopedia defining that Is any effort aimed at the unity of
Christians throughout the world. Most often, it specifically means the visible unity of
Christian churches in some form
The terms "ecumenism" and "ecumenical" come from the Greek οἰκουμένη (oikoumene), which
means "the whole inhabited world", and was historically used with specific reference to
the Roman Empire.
Walter A. Elwell, in The Concise Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, defines ecumenism as “the
organized attempt to bring about the cooperation and unity among Christians.” On an
international level, the World Council of Churches represents ecumenism when it states its
purpose this way: “The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches which confess
the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Savior according to the scriptures, and therefore seek to fulfill
together their common calling to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
For example, a Christian priest may invite a Muslim imam to speak in his pulpit, or a church
may get together with a Hindu temple to hold a joint prayer service. Defined this way,
ecumenism is definitely wrong. We are not to be “yoked together with unbelievers” (2
Corinthians 6:14;
V. Discipleships.
The word discipleships does not occur in the New Testament; the idea of disciple however is
expressed by the term mathetes some 261 times with the reference occurring in the gospels and
in the book of acts. it means to make someone a disciple is mainly indicated it means the state of
contained in or condition.
Discipleship is the relationship between a teacher (discipler) and student (disciple).
Therefore discipleships are to make follower, to be a student from the master who is Jesus Christ.
Studies on church Growth
I. Challenges of Church growth
 . The Attitude Challenge
An attitude that allows for a maintenance mentality is a non-growth mentality and will result in
the church moving into plateau and even decline. Along with the attitudes we looked we need
a few more attitude positions.
We need the attitude that has compassion for the multitudes and believes that by the Holy
Spirit, we have all the virtue and power needed to touch everyone and minister to their needs.
Once you believe that, then you must determine to be ready for the opportunity. When the
people begin pouring in, be prepared to disciple the thousands of new people.
 . The Balance Challenge
Any leader must learn how to balance all kinds of growth. This is the challenge of growing the
individual person spiritually and relationally. As that growth happens, your church grows in
grace.
As the individual is nurtured, disciple, and empowered to evangelize, they bring in more people
and you begin to expand, growing in numbers. A wise leader knows how to balance between
growing in grace and growing in numbers.
 The No Plan Challenge
When there is no plan, strategy, or practical ways planned to grow the church, then the church
doesn’t grow. Growth takes certain faith components. When the plan for maintaining the
organization as it consumes more time, resources, and personnel than expansion growth, that
plan is a non-growth plan.
 Growth outpacing the number of leaders being developed
When a church grows quickly, the challenge of leadership development is constant.
The temptation to merely put people in a position of leadership is difficult to resist
because you really do need new leaders—and now. There are more people to care
for, more people to serve and shepherd.
Wise leaders have learned from the mistake of merely filling leadership slots, and
they want to provide godly and loving leaders for the new people. Wise leaders
prepare for the growth by developing and deploying faithful leaders.
 Giving lagging behind the growth
 Typically it takes many months for new people to get connected to a church, own
the ministry and mission of the church, and start giving. So as a church starts to
grow, it is highly likely that she will be serving more and more people without
proportional financial support. In other words, the new giving always lags behind
the new growth. The challenge is to offer increasing ministry without the same
level of increasing funds.
II. Principles of church growth
 Effective leadership
In order to make a church to grow ,effective leadership is very important in the
church, because we lead peoples into right ways, and leadership it means to have
visions, goals ,aims ,mission .looking into the future what will happen after may be
two years ,five years or more
 Inspiring worship
The church cannot grow if there is no time to worship together, evening worship,
morning worship, on every Sabbath, attending in different meeting. church
members must be thought to understand the need of worship to their Lord.
Worship is categorized into three categories which is, we are worship God through
giving, singing, and listening.
 Effective evangelism in the church.
Evangelism Our Real Work.--Evangelistic work, opening the Scriptures to others, warning men
and women of what is coming upon the world, is to occupy more and still more of the time of
God's servants.
Spreading the Message, As a people we greatly need to humble our hearts before God, pleading
His forgiveness for our neglect to fulfill the gospel commission. We have made large centers in a
few places, leaving un worked many important cities. Let us now take up the work appointed us,
and proclaim the message that is to arouse men and women to a sense of their danger. If every
Seventh-day Adventist had done the work laid upon him, the number of believers would now be
much larger than it is. - Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 25. (1909)
 Strategic planning.
In strategic planning we have this three importance things which helps us to reach our goals a
Vision, Mission and Values Statement.
It is difficult to know where to focus efforts and resources without being able to articulate what it
is you are trying to do. Imagine taking a vacation without first deciding where you are going or
how you will get there.
The first, and arguably most important, step of the strategic planning process is to create a church
vision, mission and values statement. This process allows board members and church leaders to
clarify why the church exists (mission) and what the church is trying to achieve (vision).
The mission and vision is what determines strategy, planning and budgeting church resources.
 Creativity
Creativity is very important in the church, seems to be paying dividends, too. The church has
seen some of its strongest gains come in non-religious regions the denomination has established
"Christian cafes," where people can relax and ask questions without feeling the pressures of
church.
III. Importance of church growth
There is many importance of church growth in the church, the following are few not all,
Growing in Christ is the key to growing a church. This is all about being a good and effective
witness of who Christ is and what He has called your church to be and do. Following up,
teaching, and mentoring new as well as seasoned Christians are the keys to spiritual growth and
the replication of the witness.
The church is God's appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service, and
its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. From the beginning it has been God's plan that
through His church shall be reflected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members
of the church, those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to show
forth His glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the
church will eventually be made manifest, even to “the principalities and powers in heavenly
places,” the final and full display of the love of God.
IV. Objectives of church growth.
There are many church objectives which help the church to grow, but am going to give few
objectives, which is as follow as
 is to involve church members in daily bible studies
 To encourage church members to adopt regular worships. example personal worship, family
worship ,evening or morning, cooperate worship(Sabbath school and church)
 To improve leadership practices in order to enhance the credibility of, and trust in, the church
organization, its operations, and mission initiatives. Every church entity in Rombo uses a specific
orientation process for governing board and executive committee members
 To nurture believers in lives of discipleship and to involve them in service
 To enhance unit and community among church members.
 To increase the involvements of young people in the mission of the church.
 To make planting new groups of believers a priority in all parts of the world.
The following are the ways to improve church growth
I. Nurturing
To nurture a church either is very big or smaller one it is not a simple work. A small church is
very different from a medium sized church in the same way. a medium sized church church is
very different from a large church. The real different is not the size but is how the internal
functions of the church operate. Some people think that the church which started with just few
families, after two years should remain with few church members with the same may be 10 years
passed from now.
As a church grow overall needs remain the same, fellowships, bible study, prayer, outreach
programs, assimilation and communications.
We nurture church members in the following things
To involve in church participations,
Like preaching, opening the Sabbath, closing the Sabbath, some actives in the church.
Through recording church memberships
Most of churches they losing their church members without knowing where they are, where
their home place, work place, what they doing, how their membership is in the book of church
membership, as a church clerk heshe must understand how to keep church membership and to
record it effectively.
Nurturing through tithe and offering
Church members must understand the responsibility to their creator on returning and giving
offering. When they done their responsibility the become growing daily and the Lord of Heaven
continue to bless them. Rees Mel(1995).
Stewardship and money are not synonymous.stewarsdship is a relationship, as well as
management.money,or material thing, are the natural results of this management4.
Nurturing through Spiritual gifts
You can design a draft form or a list of different spiritual gifts or talents, where every church
member can fill where he/she is. and then you start to work for that lists of church members, to
involve everyone In church activities according to their gift or talents.
Through visitation
When church member visited several time may be a pastor, church leades.deacon or deaconess,
the fill comfortable, rejoicing and blessed. the great work to church members to make them to
remain in the church is through visiting them, pray together, read the word of God togrther, and
sing together, this method will reach many members and they will continue to stay in the church.
When we do pastoral visitation to church members is very important in nurturing,
Gorsuch, N, J, (1999): Pastoral Visitation Says “pastoral calling and visitation often occur in
response to particular need as an opportunity and privilege, to offer care and nuture, in the
persons context, of someone’s home.”5
II. Outreach Programs in Rombo district
In outreach programs we have different program to do as a church in this world, among of that
outreach is choir programs, use programs, Dorcas program, AMO programs, and others.
Church leaders must understand their responsibilities to prepare programs according to the need
of clients.
Church leaders can prepare a schedule through the year according to church departments or need
of the church; the following are some example on how a church can do.
Nursing Homes and Assisted Care
 Blood share ling to the patients
 Fruits, foods and some water.
 To Provide a church service at a nursing home
 To give some literature materials to the patients, doctors, and nurses.
 To Offer to read short devotionals and pray for residents, patients.
 To wash clothes, bed sheets, blankets
 To slash grasses, to prone trees and fence
 Deliver small gifts to patients and families in the children’s ward (toys, care packages, etc.)
4 Rees,M, (1995):Biblical Principles For Giving And Living, Ministerial Association Of The General
Conference Of The Seventh Day Adventist Church, Silver Spring,MD,28).
5 Gorsuch,N.J (1999):Pastoral Visitation, Creative Pastoral Care And Counseling, Library Congress
Cataloging, USA, Page 2.
Special Needs Kids or Adults outreach programs
 Hold fun days for children with special needs and their families to relax and enjoy themselves
 To help kids to Write letters and send small treats to their friends and help them to pray together
and read the word of God together.
 The church can prepare a day for all children in the street and prepare to them meals.

Have children bake cookies. Use simple, pictorial recipes and premeasure all ingredients. After
the cookie party, have kids seal the extra cookies in plastic bags. Take children to give the
cookies to a shut-in, nursing home resident, or sick child.
 Coordinate a paper drive - Communicate the ecology message from the standpoint that God
created the world and gave us authority over it

In school (secondary schools, primary school, and universities.
 The church can Give some of time to tutor children at a school in a certain area
 Students to get time free car wash for the faculty.
 To Have a “Teacher Appreciation Day” providing gifts to them, where inside there is books
 The church or department can Serve free hot breakfast to students before the school day begins
Free Outreach Orientated Bible Studies.
 To Serve hot breakfast for the homeless in the community
 Have a women's health fair where women can get information about health issues
 Do a community trash clean up
 Provide women in shelters haircuts, manicures, help in writing a resume, job interview skills,
computer basics, etc.
 Church members Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for someone in need
 Paint or fix up a run down school
 We can do a door-to-door evangelism
 To Organize a graffiti cleanup day
 The church can Have a “Free Grass Cutting” day
Any outreach program must be prepared effectively, right time, place, and event.
Care and outreach. Organize a phone chain. Every church member should be contacted at least
once a month and informed of church events for upcoming month. The calls also enable the
callers and those called to relate any concerns, prayers request, illness, or help with a problem.6
III. Retention
6 Young ,R,B(2009):How To Lead A Church To Reach People And Grow,Xulonpress,Usa,102.
In Adventist church when we deals with retention, is categorized into two categories which is as
follow as
i. Retention and
ii. Non retention
Retention deals with Accessions and dropped church members and
Non retention deals with dropped church members and missing church members.
The following data are giving as how most of church member dropped in the church, are some
reasons which will help us to know how the church is going on

IV. Christ like method
Every Member Involved and Trained
Every church member should be engaged in some line of service for the Master. Some cannot do
so much as others, but everyone should do his utmost to roll back the tide of disease and distress
that is sweeping over our world.
Here we are goining to see what methods to whom Jesus used in his ministry
To reach people where they are
When we read in the bible we see lot of verses and details which show that, Jesus Christ he
reached clients where they are, in their work place, in their home place, where they are Jesus was
reaching them.
Example the story of Samaritan woman at the Jacobs well on John 4:17-29, when he was calling
the twelve disciples and other places Jesus reach, so as the church it is good to follow Jesus
method in evangelism.
“Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with
men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs,
and won their confidence. Then He bade them, “Follow Me.”9
Healing and Teaching.
When Christ sent out the twelve disciples on their first missionary tour, He bade them, "As ye
go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and raise
the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." Matthew 10:7, 8.
7 Said by church clerk., of a certain seventh Day Adventist church,His name held.
8 Ibid.
9 White, GE, (1905):The Ministry Of Healing, Pacific Press PublishingAssociation,Mountain View
Calrfonia,CA,143.
Attending Worship
Bible is very clear to remind us to know the responsibilities of attending church worship.
Hebrews 10:25, Verse Concepts, Not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of
some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Mathew 18:20, For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their
midst." Acts 2:42-47, they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to
fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and
many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed
were together and had all things in common;
Also Jesus attended all church worship, as the church attend all church worsip,in the Sabbath,
mid week meeting and different worship, the church will grow daily, day by day as the first
church grow.
V. Discipleships.
Fellowship
It is good to do fellowship in the church, and when we do this church members will be contuning
to increase every day. In order to understand the importance of Christian fellowship, we must
first understand what Christian fellowship is and what it isn’t.. This relationship must be the
basis of Christian fellowship. We can have friendships and relationships with unbelievers, but
true Christian fellowship can only occur within the body of Christ. We are united to one another
by common beliefs, purposes and goals. Our hearts and minds are “other-worldly” because we
follow Jesus Christ, who said that His kingdom is not of this world
 Evangelism
The church of Christ is organized for service. Its watchword is ministry. Its members are
soldiers, to be trained for conflict under the Captain of their salvation. Christian ministers,
physicians, teachers, have a broader work than many have recognized. They are not only to
minister to the people, but to teach them to minister. They should not only give instruction in
right principles, but educate their hearers to impart these principles. Truth that is not lived, that is
not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it
is shared.
Bible study and small groups
People talk more in small groups.
People in a small group, whether based in a home or in the church, are more likely to participate
in discussions than in a large class. Since there are fewer people, there is more opportunity to
talk and less room to hide.
People use their gifts and talents to minister to one another.
God doesn't expect pastors and teachers to do all the ministering. He has given each of us gifts
and talents to encourage, teach, and challenge one another. Small groups provide the perfect
setting for Christians to minister one to another.
Members pray for one another.
God honors and answers prayer. When people become connected emotionally, they are more
open to praying for one another. Often, group members exchange prayer requests or become
prayer partners... (Matthew 18:20)
Small group members encourage each other to grow.
Regardless of a group's focus or format, after a while people are likely to share personal insights
and testimonies. When people share, other group members see new ways they can draw closer to
God and new steps they can take with others.
Training seminars
Every church member should be a training school for Christian workers. Its members should be
taught how to give Bible readings, how to conduct and teach Sabbath-school classes, how best to
help the poor and to care for the sick, how to work for the unconverted. There should be schools
of health, cooking schools, and classes in various lines of Christian help work. There should not
only be teaching, but actual work under experienced instructors. Let the teachers lead the way in
working among the people, and others, uniting with them, will learn from their example. One
example is worth more than many precepts. .

  • 2. I. Brief history of Rombo district Rombo District is one of the seven districts of the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. It is bordered to the north and east by Kenya, to the west by the Siha District and Hai District, and to the south by the District. The Rombo District contains a large portion of Park. Their activities is agriculture activities, and are developed in education, and in highest level of Christianity The staple food of the Chagga people is bananas. Bananas are also used to make beer, their main beverage. The Chagga plant a variety of food crops, including bananas, millet, maize (corn), beans, and cassava. They also keep cattle, goats, and sheep. Due to limited land holdings and grazing areas, most Chagga people today are forced to purchase meat from butcher shops. Pregnant women eat a diet of milk, sweet potatoes, fat, yams, and butter; these are considered female foods. Bananas and beer are considered male and are not to be eaten by pregnant women. According to the Seventh Day Adventist Church History, Rombo is the among of the oldest district which is located in North East Tanzania conference Organized 1903 and reorganized 1960, under Southern Tanzania Union Mission(STU). Seventh day Adventist message inter in Rombo on 1966 under 5 families who were working in soul mill Rongai and Kamwanga forest. On 1980 Adventist message enter at Rombo Mkuu, and church member were 5 families who were workers on (Rombo district) including District commissioner, the same year Rombo district enagleted to be district including Himo and Marangu, under Pr P.Jonas. On 1989 Himo and Marangu joined together to be the part of Moshi District, and Rombo remain to be head quarters of the district. Until now is only (6) Pastors who serves from Rombo district begun. 14 -28 February 2016, Rombo Mkuu was having a great Crusade where Pastor DAVID WANANI KIRANGI Who is a Lecture at the University of Arusha was preaching there, also TUCASA choir from the university of Arusha was serving to Jesus in different ways, pastors in training also was serving, 35 people accepted Jesus Christ to be their personal saviors through baptism .Glory to God Today Rombo District is having (532) church members, (7) churches, (6) church branchescompanies, (24)small groups and 2 ray preachers, this show that since 1966 up to 2016 the rate increase of church members per year is approximately to be 11 which is equal to 64. According to the 2012 census, the population of the Rombo District was 260, 963, this is equal to say in 490 people you found only 1 church member, this is equal to 0.2% 0f the total population II. Challenges facing Rombo District. Ecumenism The terms "ecumenism" and "ecumenical" come from the Greek οἰκουμένη (oikoumene), which means "the whole inhabited world", and was historically used with specific reference to the Roman Empire. The ecumenical vision comprises both the search for the visible unity of the Church (Ephesians 4:3) and the "whole inhabited earth" (Matthew 24:14) as the concern of all Christians.1 1 Wikipedia FreeEncyclopedia “Definition Of Ecumenism”
  • 3. Is any effort aimed at the unity of Christians throughout the world. Most often, it specifically means the visible unity of Christian churches in some form. In Rombo district the catholic church developed and expanded more and more because of this, there is small power within believers wish made them to be strong and grow frequently and somehow are called home of Catholics. Polygamy marriage. Chaggas people normally love to have more than one wife or husband, and the Bible does not allow anyone to have polygamy, and people they know very much that this is sin, when the truth preached to them they believe but they don’t ready to leave that polygamy marriage, thus why they hinder them to join with the Adventist church. this is very big challenge anywhere. Keeping the new born infants and regular church members Statistics show that, since the church started until now there are only 532 members, but if church members nurtured well and keeping effectively they must be more than 5000 members in the district. New members are not simple individuals but complicated human being. if we try to understand new members from one aspects, there is possibility that we can leady them in long way. Therefore we need to understand new members comprehensively through biblical, theological, and social cultural understanding2. Isolation for those who want to join in the church Most of people they not ready to be baptized and joining the seventh day Adventist church fearing that they will be isolated with their fellow believers, neighbors, friends, co workers even hindering to do any church activities. but the seventh day church still love those people who their church membership removed in the church book, praying with them and share together the Lords supper. The statistics of Roman Catholic Diocese of Moshi in Rombo district show that; Mission begun on 1939,under Priest Allophone Mtana,by the year 1990 the church of Moshi celebrated data show that,5680000(68%) out of 840,386,total population of Moshi diocese were Catholics. In 2003, out of 1053204 total population Catholics were 668,479= 63% In 2007 total diocese of Moshi 1,065,612. Total population, Catholics were 665, 350, =62% This simply shows that there is high rate increase of Roman Catholics in the church. III. How people joined in the church There is some percentage to know there relationships with the Adventist message began in Rombo district, these will help us to know how people interested to join in the Adventist message Most of the people they not join because of some challenges in the church and in the local area 2 Jeun .C, S (2009): Church Growth Through Nurturing New Members, seoul, Korea, Proquest LLC, (15).
  • 4. Some members they asked these questions Does this church have real pastors/elders who see their primary task to be the spiritual care and oversight of the souls of the members? In other words, just because they have powerful, biblical preaching does not mean your individual soul will be tended to on a regular basis. Ask the pastors. Ask other church members.3  First Contact with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Rombo Distric   3 Brian Croft, A Senior Pastor In Christian Church ,Presented Online” 4 Questions To Ask Before JoiningThe Church June,4 2014. Their relationshipwith Adventist began raised as an adventist converts incoming members
  • 5. IV. Biblical foundation of church growth Although the Bible does not specifically address church growth, the principle of church growth is the understanding that Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). Paul confirmed that the church has its foundation in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). Jesus Christ is also the head of the church (Ephesians 1:18- 23) and the church’s life (John 10:10). Having said that, it should be remembered that “growth” can be a relative term. There are different kinds of growth, some of which have nothing to do with numbers. A church can be alive and growing even though the number of members/attendees is not changing. If those in the church are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus, submitting to His will for their lives, both individually and corporately, that is a church that is experiencing true growth. At the same time, a church can be adding to its rolls weekly, have huge numbers, and still be spiritually stagnant. Growth of any kind follows a typical pattern. As with a growing organism, the local church has those who plant the seed (evangelists), those who water the seed (pastor/teachers), and others who use their spiritual gifts for the growth of those in the local church. But note that it is God who gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:7). Those who plant and those who water will each receive their own reward according to their labor (1 Corinthians 3:8). Raised as an adventist Through friends, relatives, cowerkers public evangelism door to door Evangelism Adventist message in school literature ministry Humanitarian and Heath ministry
  • 6. Definition of key terms I. Church growth “The Free Wikipedia encyclopedia” define that, Church Growth is a movement within evangelical Christianity which aims to develop methods to grow churches based on business marketing strategies. Various church leaders have proposed different ways to grow churches. One prominent example is the "seeker-sensitive" approach, which aims to make churches more accessible and sensitive to the needs of spiritual seekers. Donald McGavran gives us three definition of church growth, (1977), says that church-growth principle is a universal truth which, when properly interpreted and applied, contributes significantly to the growth of churches and denominations. Church growth is that science which investigates the nature, function and health of the Christian church as it relates specifically to the effective implementation of God's commission to 'make disciples of all nations’. Also continue to say Church growth is simultaneously a theological conviction, and an applied science which strives to combine the eternal principles of God's Word with the best insights of contemporary social and behavioral sciences, employing, as its initial frame of reference. However ,”Howard Culbertson” clarify according to Donald McGavran is a carefully discipline which investigates the nature and function, planting and multiplication, heath of Christian church, as they seek specifically to effectively implement the Lord’s great commission to make disciples of all nations and people (Mathew 28-19-20). White G.E (1911): The Acts Of The Apostles, says, church growth it means the church and church members must be connected to the source of all spiritual growth, Jesus Christ. Therefore church growth it means the multiplication of church members in the church through depending to Jesus Christ who is head of the church. II. Nurturing “Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary” defines that, the care and attention given to someone or something that is growing or develop ing “Dictionary. Com online” also says nurturing it means T o feed and protect: To nurture one's offspring. To support and encourage, as during the period of training or development; foster: To nurture promising musicians. To bring up; train; educate. “The free dictionaries on line” by Farlex clarify to define that, the action of raising or caring for offspring: the nurture of an infant. “Cambridge dictionaries online” proceed to define that, to take care of, feed, and protect someone or something, especially young children or plants, and help him, her, or it to develop:
  • 7. Therefore after knowing some definition of nurturing, I can say that nurturing is care ling and encouraging the new offspring, church members within the church for church growth or development. III. Retention “Business dictionary online” define that is the condition of retaining (keeping) something. " “But Merriam-Webster leaner’s dictionary”, says the act of keeping someone or something Therefore retention it means to keep church members in the church so that the church can grow. IV. Ecumenism According to Free Wikipedia Encyclopedia defining that Is any effort aimed at the unity of Christians throughout the world. Most often, it specifically means the visible unity of Christian churches in some form The terms "ecumenism" and "ecumenical" come from the Greek οἰκουμένη (oikoumene), which means "the whole inhabited world", and was historically used with specific reference to the Roman Empire. Walter A. Elwell, in The Concise Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, defines ecumenism as “the organized attempt to bring about the cooperation and unity among Christians.” On an international level, the World Council of Churches represents ecumenism when it states its purpose this way: “The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Savior according to the scriptures, and therefore seek to fulfill together their common calling to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For example, a Christian priest may invite a Muslim imam to speak in his pulpit, or a church may get together with a Hindu temple to hold a joint prayer service. Defined this way, ecumenism is definitely wrong. We are not to be “yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14; V. Discipleships. The word discipleships does not occur in the New Testament; the idea of disciple however is expressed by the term mathetes some 261 times with the reference occurring in the gospels and in the book of acts. it means to make someone a disciple is mainly indicated it means the state of contained in or condition. Discipleship is the relationship between a teacher (discipler) and student (disciple). Therefore discipleships are to make follower, to be a student from the master who is Jesus Christ. Studies on church Growth
  • 8. I. Challenges of Church growth  . The Attitude Challenge An attitude that allows for a maintenance mentality is a non-growth mentality and will result in the church moving into plateau and even decline. Along with the attitudes we looked we need a few more attitude positions. We need the attitude that has compassion for the multitudes and believes that by the Holy Spirit, we have all the virtue and power needed to touch everyone and minister to their needs. Once you believe that, then you must determine to be ready for the opportunity. When the people begin pouring in, be prepared to disciple the thousands of new people.  . The Balance Challenge Any leader must learn how to balance all kinds of growth. This is the challenge of growing the individual person spiritually and relationally. As that growth happens, your church grows in grace. As the individual is nurtured, disciple, and empowered to evangelize, they bring in more people and you begin to expand, growing in numbers. A wise leader knows how to balance between growing in grace and growing in numbers.  The No Plan Challenge When there is no plan, strategy, or practical ways planned to grow the church, then the church doesn’t grow. Growth takes certain faith components. When the plan for maintaining the organization as it consumes more time, resources, and personnel than expansion growth, that plan is a non-growth plan.  Growth outpacing the number of leaders being developed When a church grows quickly, the challenge of leadership development is constant. The temptation to merely put people in a position of leadership is difficult to resist because you really do need new leaders—and now. There are more people to care for, more people to serve and shepherd. Wise leaders have learned from the mistake of merely filling leadership slots, and they want to provide godly and loving leaders for the new people. Wise leaders prepare for the growth by developing and deploying faithful leaders.  Giving lagging behind the growth  Typically it takes many months for new people to get connected to a church, own the ministry and mission of the church, and start giving. So as a church starts to grow, it is highly likely that she will be serving more and more people without proportional financial support. In other words, the new giving always lags behind
  • 9. the new growth. The challenge is to offer increasing ministry without the same level of increasing funds. II. Principles of church growth  Effective leadership In order to make a church to grow ,effective leadership is very important in the church, because we lead peoples into right ways, and leadership it means to have visions, goals ,aims ,mission .looking into the future what will happen after may be two years ,five years or more  Inspiring worship The church cannot grow if there is no time to worship together, evening worship, morning worship, on every Sabbath, attending in different meeting. church members must be thought to understand the need of worship to their Lord. Worship is categorized into three categories which is, we are worship God through giving, singing, and listening.  Effective evangelism in the church. Evangelism Our Real Work.--Evangelistic work, opening the Scriptures to others, warning men and women of what is coming upon the world, is to occupy more and still more of the time of God's servants. Spreading the Message, As a people we greatly need to humble our hearts before God, pleading His forgiveness for our neglect to fulfill the gospel commission. We have made large centers in a few places, leaving un worked many important cities. Let us now take up the work appointed us, and proclaim the message that is to arouse men and women to a sense of their danger. If every Seventh-day Adventist had done the work laid upon him, the number of believers would now be much larger than it is. - Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 25. (1909)  Strategic planning. In strategic planning we have this three importance things which helps us to reach our goals a Vision, Mission and Values Statement.
  • 10. It is difficult to know where to focus efforts and resources without being able to articulate what it is you are trying to do. Imagine taking a vacation without first deciding where you are going or how you will get there. The first, and arguably most important, step of the strategic planning process is to create a church vision, mission and values statement. This process allows board members and church leaders to clarify why the church exists (mission) and what the church is trying to achieve (vision). The mission and vision is what determines strategy, planning and budgeting church resources.  Creativity Creativity is very important in the church, seems to be paying dividends, too. The church has seen some of its strongest gains come in non-religious regions the denomination has established "Christian cafes," where people can relax and ask questions without feeling the pressures of church. III. Importance of church growth There is many importance of church growth in the church, the following are few not all, Growing in Christ is the key to growing a church. This is all about being a good and effective witness of who Christ is and what He has called your church to be and do. Following up, teaching, and mentoring new as well as seasoned Christians are the keys to spiritual growth and the replication of the witness. The church is God's appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service, and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. From the beginning it has been God's plan that through His church shall be reflected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members of the church, those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to show forth His glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to “the principalities and powers in heavenly places,” the final and full display of the love of God. IV. Objectives of church growth. There are many church objectives which help the church to grow, but am going to give few objectives, which is as follow as  is to involve church members in daily bible studies
  • 11.  To encourage church members to adopt regular worships. example personal worship, family worship ,evening or morning, cooperate worship(Sabbath school and church)  To improve leadership practices in order to enhance the credibility of, and trust in, the church organization, its operations, and mission initiatives. Every church entity in Rombo uses a specific orientation process for governing board and executive committee members  To nurture believers in lives of discipleship and to involve them in service  To enhance unit and community among church members.  To increase the involvements of young people in the mission of the church.  To make planting new groups of believers a priority in all parts of the world. The following are the ways to improve church growth I. Nurturing To nurture a church either is very big or smaller one it is not a simple work. A small church is very different from a medium sized church in the same way. a medium sized church church is very different from a large church. The real different is not the size but is how the internal functions of the church operate. Some people think that the church which started with just few families, after two years should remain with few church members with the same may be 10 years passed from now. As a church grow overall needs remain the same, fellowships, bible study, prayer, outreach programs, assimilation and communications. We nurture church members in the following things To involve in church participations, Like preaching, opening the Sabbath, closing the Sabbath, some actives in the church. Through recording church memberships Most of churches they losing their church members without knowing where they are, where their home place, work place, what they doing, how their membership is in the book of church membership, as a church clerk heshe must understand how to keep church membership and to record it effectively. Nurturing through tithe and offering Church members must understand the responsibility to their creator on returning and giving offering. When they done their responsibility the become growing daily and the Lord of Heaven continue to bless them. Rees Mel(1995).
  • 12. Stewardship and money are not synonymous.stewarsdship is a relationship, as well as management.money,or material thing, are the natural results of this management4. Nurturing through Spiritual gifts You can design a draft form or a list of different spiritual gifts or talents, where every church member can fill where he/she is. and then you start to work for that lists of church members, to involve everyone In church activities according to their gift or talents. Through visitation When church member visited several time may be a pastor, church leades.deacon or deaconess, the fill comfortable, rejoicing and blessed. the great work to church members to make them to remain in the church is through visiting them, pray together, read the word of God togrther, and sing together, this method will reach many members and they will continue to stay in the church. When we do pastoral visitation to church members is very important in nurturing, Gorsuch, N, J, (1999): Pastoral Visitation Says “pastoral calling and visitation often occur in response to particular need as an opportunity and privilege, to offer care and nuture, in the persons context, of someone’s home.”5 II. Outreach Programs in Rombo district In outreach programs we have different program to do as a church in this world, among of that outreach is choir programs, use programs, Dorcas program, AMO programs, and others. Church leaders must understand their responsibilities to prepare programs according to the need of clients. No big issue; I just drifted away, Lack of compassion for the hurting, Moral failure on my part, I did not fit in, Too much focus on minor issues, Conflict in the congregation, Moral failures of members, Moral failures of leader, Pressure from family or friends, Race, ethnic or tribal issues7  Most Important Reasons Why Decided to Stop Attending The following are some reasons why people decided to stop Few members of my age group, Legalistic attitudes, Pastor was dictatorial, Church did not do much to help the poor, I did not believe some doctrines, Unrealistic demands on members8 IV. Christ like method Every Member Involved and Trained Every church member should be engaged in some line of service for the Master. Some cannot do so much as others, but everyone should do his utmost to roll back the tide of disease and distress that is sweeping over our world. Here we are goining to see what methods to whom Jesus used in his ministry To reach people where they are When we read in the bible we see lot of verses and details which show that, Jesus Christ he reached clients where they are, in their work place, in their home place, where they are Jesus was reaching them. Example the story of Samaritan woman at the Jacobs well on John 4:17-29, when he was calling the twelve disciples and other places Jesus reach, so as the church it is good to follow Jesus method in evangelism. “Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, “Follow Me.”9 Healing and Teaching. When Christ sent out the twelve disciples on their first missionary tour, He bade them, "As ye go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." Matthew 10:7, 8. 7 Said by church clerk., of a certain seventh Day Adventist church,His name held. 8 Ibid. 9 White, GE, (1905):The Ministry Of Healing, Pacific Press PublishingAssociation,Mountain View Calrfonia,CA,143.
  • 16. Attending Worship Bible is very clear to remind us to know the responsibilities of attending church worship. Hebrews 10:25, Verse Concepts, Not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. Mathew 18:20, For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst." Acts 2:42-47, they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; Also Jesus attended all church worship, as the church attend all church worsip,in the Sabbath, mid week meeting and different worship, the church will grow daily, day by day as the first church grow. V. Discipleships. Fellowship It is good to do fellowship in the church, and when we do this church members will be contuning to increase every day. In order to understand the importance of Christian fellowship, we must first understand what Christian fellowship is and what it isn’t.. This relationship must be the basis of Christian fellowship. We can have friendships and relationships with unbelievers, but true Christian fellowship can only occur within the body of Christ. We are united to one another by common beliefs, purposes and goals. Our hearts and minds are “other-worldly” because we follow Jesus Christ, who said that His kingdom is not of this world  Evangelism The church of Christ is organized for service. Its watchword is ministry. Its members are soldiers, to be trained for conflict under the Captain of their salvation. Christian ministers, physicians, teachers, have a broader work than many have recognized. They are not only to minister to the people, but to teach them to minister. They should not only give instruction in right principles, but educate their hearers to impart these principles. Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessing can be retained only as it is shared.
  • 17. Bible study and small groups People talk more in small groups. People in a small group, whether based in a home or in the church, are more likely to participate in discussions than in a large class. Since there are fewer people, there is more opportunity to talk and less room to hide. People use their gifts and talents to minister to one another. God doesn't expect pastors and teachers to do all the ministering. He has given each of us gifts and talents to encourage, teach, and challenge one another. Small groups provide the perfect setting for Christians to minister one to another. Members pray for one another. God honors and answers prayer. When people become connected emotionally, they are more open to praying for one another. Often, group members exchange prayer requests or become prayer partners... (Matthew 18:20) Small group members encourage each other to grow. Regardless of a group's focus or format, after a while people are likely to share personal insights and testimonies. When people share, other group members see new ways they can draw closer to God and new steps they can take with others. Training seminars Every church member should be a training school for Christian workers. Its members should be taught how to give Bible readings, how to conduct and teach Sabbath-school classes, how best to help the poor and to care for the sick, how to work for the unconverted. There should be schools of health, cooking schools, and classes in various lines of Christian help work. There should not only be teaching, but actual work under experienced instructors. Let the teachers lead the way in working among the people, and others, uniting with them, will learn from their example. One example is worth more than many precepts. .
