deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and
treatment of mental disorders (??).
3. PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT MODALITIES
Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
• Discuss issues with the therapist who resolves
it or teach coping skills.
– individual therapy (1-on-1)
– group therapy (groups of 5-10. Common topic. eg
anger mx, suicide etc
– couples therapy, and (couples) eg relaionship
issues.
– family therapy (1 or more families). Individual /
whole.
4. Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT)
• Most common
• Individual or family
• Replace Negative/unheathy thoughts with
realistic ones.
• Eg:- failure.
5. Dialectical behavior Therapy (DBT)
• Accepting negative/unhealthy thoughts and
learning to find balance b/w acceptance and
change.
• Eg:- telling lies, ungrateful. Etc
6. Interpersonal Therapy
• Works for relationship issues
• Teach new interpersonal / communication
skills to improve relation quality.
• Eg:- Couples counseling
7. Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
• Treat PTSD (suicide, death etc)
• Brain stimulated with back and forth
movement of eye. This helps stimulate
traumatic memory which can be resolved.
