8. Experiment 1 process
• For my first experiment I have tested out mixing real life photography with my own graphic art, I originally was going to recreate
the road runner scene of the fake road in the wall, however as I began I changed my idea to Dexter's laboratory and have tried
to make it as he has blown the hole in the wall. I then placed an image of some lined paper behind the layer so it all looks like its
drawn on and using the multiply setting the image and the paper can combine to make it seem more realistic and add more
realism to the final product.
• I started with a simple image of a wall then using the quick select tool I selected several bricks and deleted that section of the
layer to create the effect of a hole, I then began to draw Dexter's lab using the graphics tablet basing it partially from what I
remember but also implementing my own designs, using the tablet is a far better way to draw in Photoshop as it recreates the
feeling of a pen to paper which is much easier and has made my product look far better then if I were to use the mouse tool .
• Once the lab was complete I then went online and copied by eye an image of Dexter using the tablet again, I found one where
he has exploded something to make it seem like the hole is his fault, as well as drawing a few white bricks on the floor outside
to make this effect much clearer.
• To finish the product I added color only to Dexter and the lab leaving some of the paper white to make it still look like its been
drawn in.
• Once it was complete I went back and added a sign that says “Derelict building keep out”, this was to make it look as though he
shouldn't’t be there and to add the the Imaginary side of the image, also as Dexter's character tends to not really care for things
like this or as if he has placed it to hide his lab.
• Looking at the final product I think the outcome has came out as I hoped, as it’s the first time I have tried use this style I was
worried the drawings and the photo would not work together, however with this it is rather clear what is happening and what I
have tried to portray.
• I have also used a couple of methods and skills I have learnt on this experiment such as the multiply tool to add the the realism
of the drawing but also getting to use the graphics tablet, which was a great way to get my drawing looking half decent but also
much easier and quicker and it gave me far more freedom with the design.
• However my product could have been improved if I were to use my own image as I think that the wall is quite clearly a stock
image, also if I had added color to the bricks as well maybe and spent more time adding more bricks it could have came out
really well. I also would have liked to have used tools such as the shadow and burn tool on the colored version to add more
detail and just make it more interesting and realistic.
10. Experiment 2 Process
• For my second experiment I have gone with something different but still sticking with the graphics side of art using my own drawing,
however I have tried making a moving graphic or a gif. I wanted to make something trippy for my experiment so I could incorporate that
sort of spiral effect.
• I started by drawing the character using the graphics tablet and using shortcuts such as the circle tool as borders which I would normally
have to draw, adding shading by changing the opacity of the colors the shadow is on top of.
• Once he was done I could start the animation process starting with the moving spiral thing in the back. To make this I just made loads of
circles different colors rasterized them then merged the layers, then to get it to move I duplicated the layer as many times as there was
colors and changed each layer of the circles color as if they were changing in order.
• I then did the same sort of process with the eyes so it matches the back ground, however I included little spinning spirals which I just had
to duplicate then turn on each layer of the animation.
• Making the text was actually quite tricky as I drew the text out first trying to make it un-even and a bit all over to match the meaning of
the word, but then for each letter I wanted to create a different effect, so for the I, A and the S I made it so they simply just had layers that
moved slightly on each frame and with the N I just had it so it changed color to match the back.
• The N and the E are both pretty different to the others as with the N I just drew to overlapping letters then had them moving to create a
blurry effect, and for the E I just had it so it is cut up into colors that slowly change and move around the E.
• Once I had a lot of the animation done I wanted to try and add more detail to the character, so I added stuff to his clothing and using a
similar technique to the N I made the word “HELP” move, and I also added a Rainbow tab to his tongue to add to the trippy style of the gif
as well as the topic of “Insanity” using the same technique as the E so it is animated.
• The final part of the animation I tried to implement was the planet and other things that spiral around his head so he seems more out of it
or in his own little universe. To make this I drew the planet using the circle tool and the pencil, and for the other shapes I used the custom
shape tool, I then duplicated the layers and changed the size on each frame moving it to the side and down slightly so it looks like its
circling his head.
• After completing and exporting the product as I gif I am happy that the product has came out the style id liked and the animation works
how I wanted it to when making the product, using the frame animations to make a trippy edit like this has been a great learning curve as
its got me used to how to animate in this style but also opens up more for me to do in future production.
• I am really happy with the planet and other objects which circle the characters head in this animation as I have managed to pull it off and
is something I have never really tried to do at all, it could have been made a bit smoother however I am happy for this is my first.
• However if I could go back and improve the experiment I would have liked to test out some other and more skilled animations which
would have really tested my skills and showed me some new things I could use, also I would have liked to try and add some Photoshop
effects.
• Also doing this has been enjoyable and has made me more interested in animation and interested in how to make a animation which is
professional and detailed.
11. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• After finishing my experiment I am actually quite
pleased with how both of them have came out,
and I would like to try and include a bit of both of
them with my product making maybe two
exhibits that use each style.
• I would really like to try include my own taken
images but as well as my own drawing, and I
enjoy the animating and believe I am good at it so
would benefit including this.
