What Is An Avatar And How To Use It In Marketing
2. An Avatar (as we’re using the term here) is an icon or figure representing the embodiment or manifestation of a person or an idea: It
is - in a nutshell - your ideal customer.

(Click Here (http://www.madskillsmarketing.com/blog/isnt-it-fascinating-that-nobodys-ever-succeeded-online) for more on how to
identify your avatar.)
Not knowing what an avatar is, and more importantly - not knowing WHO their avatar is - is a common mistake among “newbie”
marketers. Hardly anyone explains to you - in all the “guru” training out there - that before you can marketing anything to anyone,
who have to know who the market is for the product you want to market!
You Wouldn't Feed Steak To A Baby...Would You?
Think about it: If your product was steak, you wouldn’t market steak to babies. You wouldn’t FEED steak to a baby (how would they
chew it?) so if you were marketing steak to babies you’re not likely to make a single sale. (And besides, assuming you found a
savvy, toothy baby online…how would they pay for the steak, right?) ;) (How would they read your copy or understand your
3. marketing video?) Are you getting my point?
As an example, my avatar is someone who is looking to use the internet to generate additional income from home. This person is
between the ages of 24 and 60 and is - for the most part - looking to earn between $3k and $5k per month. He or she will typically
have very little experience with Internet Marketing, though they may have SOME experience with Network Marketing. IN general,
my avatar will have enough computer experience to be able to cut and paste and check and write an email, and my demographic is
pretty evenly split 50/50 between men and women. Does this sound like you?
Once you’ve determined who your avatar is, you’ll want to make sure that every bit of marketing you do in your business is designed
with your avatar in mind. If you’re NOT marketing to your avatar, you’re missing your window of opportunity!
As you’re placing advertising online you’ll want to consider who your avatar is. Where would THAT person be likely to be found
online? If your avatar is an overweight male between the ages of 44 and 60, you’re not likely to find him surfing “work at home mom”
sites. You might have better luck placing advertising on sites that cater to overweight, aging men: gym equipment sites, weight loss
sites, men’s health sites, etc.
Researching your avatar’s demographics will help you determine where to place your advertising for the most bang for your buck.
And one thing’s for certain: if you’re not considering your avatar when you place your advertising, it’s a shot in the dark. Maybe
you’ll hit your target market, maybe you won’t. That sort of mistake gets expensive fast.
If you’re doing Facebook marketing - posting in groups, etc. - you’ll want to consider your avatar, too. Similar to the above example,
think about which groups your avatar will be most likely to join. If your avatar is a young, stay-at-home mom, then you’re going to do
better with mommy-based groups than you will with fishing or car aficionado groups.
Similarly, if you’re marketing online via a website (blogging, for instance), you’ll want to tailor your posts to be relevant to your
avatar. If the product that you’re marketing is a special, scented fishing lure guaranteed to help you hook the biggest catch, blog
posts about flower arranging aren’t likely to attract your perfect customer. However, if you’re marketing a product that teaches flower
arranging, then writing blog posts geared towards gardeners would be a perfect match.
Email Marketing? Avatar!
4. (http://empowernetwork.com/join?id=cicotte)
Keep your avatar in mind as you craft emails to your list, as well. You may be enthralled - personally - with the intricacies of candle
making, but if your list was built around a mechanically inclined avatar who prefers DIY projects for his 1970s muscle car collection,
then your email open rate and click-through rate will be abysmal. Candle making isn’t likely to hold your avatar’s attention and after
a few emails from you that have nothing to do with his interests, he’s either going to opt out of your list, or delete your email without
even reading the subject line.
Finally, as you market to your avatar, the number one thing that you want to do is deliver value. For years it’s been said that
“content is King.” That hasn’t changed one bit. But it could be amended to read “Relevant Content is King!” The most effective
marketing will always include a message to market match: in other words, your content must be relevant to your avatar in order for
your marketing to be effective. And the only way you can craft a relevant message is if you know who your avatar is and
consistently market specifically to him or her.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on high-converting funnels!
