Just as “cloud” hit the legal market in the early part of this decade, we are now staring at “big data” in the legal industry. Trying to make meaning out of this tagline is critically important as different stakeholders look at the future of their departments. In the legal industry, the role of marketing and business development is as critical as ever, and how these departments leverage big data and analytics will shape the future of their success.

Just as “cloud” hit the legal market in the early part of this decade, we are now staring at “big data” in the legal industry. Trying to make meaning out of this tagline is critically important as different stakeholders look at the future of their departments. In the legal industry the role of marketing and business development is as critical as ever, and how these departments leverage big data and analytics will shape the future of their success.
In this talk I’ll walk the audience through a story of how one large company leveraged big data and analytics to better understand the landscape of their patent portfolio in an area that was previously less than transparent.  Armed with millions of bits of data this organization applied a layer of analysis that revealed actionable intelligence that has changed the way they source outside counsel. This big data effort created a lens through which the organization could see layers of value for the future.
Starting at a basic layer the organization saw an opportunity to coach and partner with lawyers supporting their efforts to secure intellectual property rights. They could direct specific behaviors by having insight about their opponents. Armed with this scouting report that could easily pivot their strategy to secure the desired outcome and reduce the costs associated with this success. As a second and more esoteric layer, they saw an opportunity to fix problems inside the USPTO. Armed with insights about the behaviors of thousands of patent examiners, this organization was able to drive change inside one of the government’s most prestigious office.
The message at the end of the program is that big data is here to stay, and those who get out in front of the trend have an opportunity to create sustainable advantages that others won’t.
    Audience takeaways
    •        Big Data is readily available
    •        Creativity in how one uses big data and corresponding analysis is essential
    •        Driving towards competitive advantage is essential for legal marketing and business development teams
