With Window 7 you will have a new profile with a different structure. Moving from Windows NT profile structure to Windows 7 profile structure. Your profile will now use the redirected, roaming, and cached configurations.
There are several benefits to this new profile structure. Redirected profiles redirect specific folders in your profile to your S drive. Folders being redirected are the Desktop, Application data, Contacts, Downloads, IE Favorites, Links, and Searches. By utilizing this profile structure we reduced the impact from profile resets and you should no longer experience any data loss on a reset. This will increase the amount of storage that you need on your S drive and requests for S drive storage capacity increases can be requested by placing a work order. Redirected profiles will help to lower the time it takes for you to login to computers across campus by reducing the size of your profile.Roaming profiles allow for the same profile data to be available on any computer you log into on campus. Roaming profiles help to secure data from your profile in that the profile is not stored locally on computers where public access is available such as classrooms and labs.We are adding cached profile configuration on all faculty and staff office workstations. Cached profiles will help to lower your login times when you are at your office since the profile will not need to be retrieved from the server on each login. Cached profiles will also help with local setting items that won’t “stick” like the Microsoft quick access toolbar.
Very large profiles in XP caused many issues, login times were slow, profile resets were painful, data was lost when log offs took a long time and the computer was shut down before the data transfer was complete due to the size of the profile.
Profile quotas natively built into Windows 7 profiles will keep quotas low. Windows 7 proifle size will be less than 100MB which will help to ensure that login and log off times are as quick as possible. Minimal impact will be experienced when a Windows 7 profile is reset.
The 32 or 64 bit architecture refers to the memory address length that can be referenced by the processor. With a 32-bit operating system, the maximum amount of memory that can be utilized is 4GB. 64-bit applications will not work on a 32-bit operating system and 64-bit application programming is rapidly becoming the standard. Many software companies are now starting to only develop 64-bit applications with the latest version, the Adobe Creative suite is a good example of this happening as several applications were specific to 64-bit operating systems. While the 64-bit operating system does have some limitations, we believe that it will best position us for future growth. 16-bit applications from the Windows 3.1 days will no longer work. If newer versions are available a software upgrade will be necessary. Some 32-bit software applications may not work and may need to be upgraded to newer versions as well, as we find these applications we will analyze the application and determine if an upgrade will be necessary. 64-bit operating systems are able to access more than 4 GB of RAM which will allow faster processing on your computer. Moving to the 64-bit architecture prepares us now for future operating system and application upgrades.If you have older software or peripheral devices that are over four years old, please send in the make, model, or manufacturer details to the service desk via e-mail and ask for them to be verified for Windows 7 compatibility. We currently have over 150 applications that are centrally managed and have been tested for compatibility and we have pro-actively replaced over 100 computers on campus that had hardware that would not support the 64-bit architecture.
When you login to Windows 7 for the first time you will be logging into a new profile. Printers both local and networked will need to be setup. Outlook will need to auto configure on first use, this will in no way affect your e-mail. If you have personal folders or e-mail archives, they will need to be remapped to the new Outlook profile. Your Outlook address cache may not be available. This is the auto-fill that pops up when you are tying a new e-mail message. The service desk is able to restore this if it is not available after the upgrade. Any software that you manually installed will need to be reinstalled. This includes software installed by getting local administrator rights and installing from a CD/DVD or the internet. Software that you contacted the service desk to install through elevated privileges will also need to be reinstalled. Software installed via the SHSU Program Installation Menu will need to be reinstalled via the same method. You may need to reset your desktop background, check out the new Windows 7 themes and backgrounds for a fresh new look. Any software shortcuts that were created associated with older software installations may need to be recreated since the installation path is changed with Windows 7. Any managed software may take 24-48 hours to fully install once your computer has been upgraded. Software installed via the SHSU Program Installation Menu should be available to install within a few hours after the upgrade. Any data that you may have had stored on your local computers C:\\ drive will be gone. This should be backed up prior to the upgrade date set for your building as we will be unable to recover local data. You can request an increase in your S drive storage capacity to have a place to backup the data. We do ask that you be mindful to only copy data that is unique (no duplicates) and is needed for University business.
Most labs and classrooms will be upgraded during this timeline. Mini-mester classes have been identified and have been placed on a separate time line. We are working with individual departments to upgrade some lab hardware and we will schedule those in conjunction with the departments needs.
Most faculty workstations will be upgraded on these schedules. Exceptions will be made for those teaching mini-mester classes. Upgrade exceptions will also be made for research machines that are identified as having instruments or software that is incompatible with a 64-bit operating system. We do rely on your input regarding these exceptions. Please communicate with us if you know of these types of systems.
We are actively accepting volunteers to upgrade early from all areas. We have communicated with all of the department directors and are working with them to schedule the upgrades based on the business needs of the department so that minimal interruption is experienced. Software testing is on-going as there are many applications in each area that need to be tested. Hardware upgrades are on-going as well for both computers and printers.
Training is available now through the HR training website. We are currently holding multiple training sessions each week and can expand that as interest increases. Technology tutorials are available for items like adding a pst file or adding a network printer. Remote support is available during our posted service desk support hours by going to support.shsu.edu from any internet connected computer. Remote support includes an integrated chat feature that will allow you to communicate with the technician. You can also call the service desk and use the expedited extension 4-help, 4-4357 specific to faculty and staff. You an also e-mail the service desk with questions as needed. We post all IT related news, outages, changes on our social media sites so if you haven’t already please check these out and keep up to date.
