3 Music Video Analysis My life by The Game Ft. Lil Wayne The video starts with someone running away from someone; we assume he has committed a crime since he is dressed like a stereotypical gangster. He has baggy jeans and a wife beater since it’s filmed in LA where it is very hot. The video then shows the dead body lying on the ground with blood on his shirt suggesting that he had been shot. There are medical people around him trying to resuscitate him however this does not work since he is already dead. This is a long shot to establish the whole scene, his mother is being held off him by the medical people when his heart stops. We then see “The Game” rapping outside what we assume is his house which is a rough neighbourhood. This is suggesting he come from their and although he now has all this money from signing he has lived through bad times where people are always taken from him because of violence which is what he is rapping about in this song. We can establish that it’s a rough area since the houses are small and look run down. There are no nice new cars on the streets, they are all relatively old and look like they are about to break down. We also see Lil Wayne in a cemetery looking at grave stones we assume its people he knew since he’s crouching down and bowing his head after having read the name. We see The Game going into a run down shop which is in his area and stealing some things from their. This suggest that most people in that area also steal things since two men go into that same shop when The Game come out, we see them shooting. They are dressed like him, looking like gangsters with their flat caps. This is the image of a typical gangster. We see the window of the shop shatter from a gun shot then one guy who is trying to rob the shop gets shot by the owner. This shows that the neighbourhood is bad since you wouldn’t keep a gun behind a counter in a little corner shop. My Life By Lil Wayne Ft. The Game (2) When the shot changes from the shop scene to the cemetery we then see a young boy who we assume is The Game when he was about 15 kneeling at his father’s grave since the lyrics say “like I needed my father but he needed a needle” from this quote we can also assume his father died from a heroin overdose. This is a stereotypical image of gangsters who take drugs and the hard life they have to go through at such a young age. Lil Wayne and The Game are rapping in the cemetery next to a big statue of an angel, this symbolises all the dead people as well as a reference to heaven. In the Christian religion angles are believed to protect people as well as bring your spirit to heaven when you die. The angel may suggest salvation from a life of crime as well as hope and spiritual uplifting from all the danger and violence around them. Further on in the video The Game is chilling on his porch when he sees a man running away from the police, he acts like its no big deal suggesting he sees it everyday where he is from. The Game suggests that the police are his enemy and that they take away his loved one, this is because the police shoots a young boy running away from them. There is a scene where the Game is running away from a policeman chasing him; we don’t see why he is being chased. At the end of the video there is a long shot of many people who look like they come from his area in the cemetery walking towards the camera, one by one they vanish which is symbolising all the people who have died. Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi Ft. MGMT The video starts of with people sitting around a table drinking and having fun. Kid Cudi is at the head suggesting that he is important and our main focus. Whilst he is sinning at this party the people around him continue drinking and talking to their neighbour like they have not noticed him. There are cuts which are a scene of a girl who we assume is drunk opening a bottle of champagne. Kid Cudi is singing about how he lives life to the fullest and doesn’t care what people think about him from the video living to the fullest, for him is about partying and having a good time. There is a slow mode effect at the start of the video suggesting that he is drunk, however this can also suggest that you need to live life at a slow pace and have a good time. When the chorus comes we see everyone at the party standing up and raising their glasses as if it was new years. They all put their glasses together and someone pours more champagne into them. We know they are having a good time since everyone has a smile on their face and is laughing; this is partially because they are also drunk. We can tell they are because they spill drinks. We can see all sorts of bottles and drinks around the place. There is an image of people drinking shots as well as having a glass of wine. When he sings about sad time everything is in slow motion, this is because he is realising that although everyone is having a good time, it’s because of the alcohol. Alcohol gives you a false allusion of happiness when you’re on it. The confetti is being thrown about and hands are in the air when the DJ puts a record on. The record is the image of Kid Cudi’s actual CD cover; he is promoting it in the video slyly. Website to song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xzU9Qqdqww
Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi Ft. MGMT (2) There are shots of him singing along side Drake who is another famous singer to show the he has contacts and parties with famous people. When they are both in the room where they are all partying Kid Cudi is surrounded by girls which is a stereotypical image of a rapper (often they have girls, money and bling) this suggest that he is a player. Drake and Kid Cudi then open a bottle of champagne each and spray everyone, this shows that they have money and can afford to splash it out. We see all the girls faffing around and trying to protect their hair and make up. This is also a stereotypical image of girls suggesting that girl’s care about their appearance. The girls are dressed for partying, they have mini dresses or skirts with a nice top and they are wearing high heals. If the girls made the effort of looking good its understandable that they don’t want it to be ruined, however it looks like they are having a good time when the champagne is being splashed on them. When it says “everything shinning will always be gold” Kid Cudi either shows a chain or a ring that he is wearing suggesting he is rich and can afford nice jewellery. The video then ends in a long shot where we see Kid Cudi approaching the camera walking from side to side due to the alcohol. He reaches a door and stumbles trough the corridor holding himself up against the wall. He then sees himself dressed up in a suit stumbling, Kid Cudi then realises that he had to much to drink and looks like an idiot falling over the stairs. At the last moments of the clip after seeing himself in a state he just bows his head with disappointment. Website to picture: www.thehiphopupdate.com
Dynamite by Taio Cruz The video starts with Taio Cruz pulling up to a garage which has sexy females in skimpy outfits doing all the mechanical jobs. The girls are working on the cars; they are handling a bunch of equipment which is usually used by men. Women are not usually very familiar with the contents of a car or motorbike engine. The girls are going “the dirty work” which is stereotypically a man’s job, however they are not dressed as a typical mechanics. The girls are stereotypical for this type of music video, upbeat RnB / Hip Hop music videos often have girls in little outfits dancing around, it makes the artist look good. As he arrives on his fast, new looking bike the camera shots a close up of the make of the bike which is a BMW. This is an expensive make suggesting that he is rich. When he gets off it two girls follow him carrying a brief case each. They keep a distance from him so we can see who’s boss which is obviously Taio Cruz. He is walking through this outdoors garage where we can see many cars getting fixed by ladies in mini shorts and half cut t-shirts. He is a stereotypical image of a player with his bling which is all the vehicles and by the close he is wearing. He looks like he has lots of swagger with his leather jacket and sun glasses, although we see why he may need them since the weather looks really hot. This may be the reason why all the girls are in revealing outfits. He has the girls and cars in his video which is typical since those are the things which boys are meant to like the most. Speed, power, girls and wealth according to Michael Shore’s theories are the things which male adolescents fantasise about the most. This video had all those elements therefore a typical male teenager would love to be in Taio Cruz’s place. When Taio Cruz gets on one of the bonnets of the cars and starts singing all the girls surround him and start dancing like they are in a nightclub. The camera angle is tilted towards him from a low angle suggesting that he is above everyone and has power. wowmusicvideos.com is the website to the picture
Dynamite by Taio Cruz (2) In the next scene there are two girls who work for Taio Cruz carrying red briefcases containing dynamite. They show their merchandise to a lady sitting on a sofa in the book of her car. The red briefcases suggest danger. Meanwhile we see flashes of girls up close working out and taking a rest in the hot weather. This doesn’t have any meaning to the video it only suggest that he’s a player and can get all the hot girls. However through these images this suggest male audiences may buy it to fantasies / enjoy watching these good looking females being slightly provocative and working on vehicles. Some how in the car park/ garage a little blow up pool appears and we see more girls in bikinis dancing and drinking, having a good time. This is irrelevant to the storyline. When they are all partying round the car an explosion goes of behind him, he lift his arms when it goes off suggesting that he made them go off. The crowd goes wild and continues dancing though out the night. When he is about to leave, he takes his motorbike and does a spinner with his back wheal creating a lot of smoke. We see this in a close up shot as well as it being in slow motion, to make sure viewers see how cool he is and that he can do tricks. In general this video does not have any relevance to the lyrics of the song except when people are putting their hand up and dancing since the lyrics are “I through my hand up in the air sometimes, singing ayogotta let go!”. This is a stereotypical video of what a new upcoming male singer would do since it have half naked girls, cars, parties and it shows luxury suggesting he has money. Story BoardTreatment Song: All Time Low Artist: The Wanted Concept: The band which we are going to create a music video for is called “The Wanted” who is a relatively new upcoming band. The song which the video will be for is called “All Time Low” which is their new hit single. We are going to produce the video as well as make the design for the CD cover and a promotional advert to put in a Magazine; this will contain reviews and rating of the single. Narrative: The song is about a man who has been cheated on by his girlfriend and he does not know what to do since he feels so low and down. In the song he suggests that he has tried doing everything to try and forget about his unfaithful girlfriend but cannot since his feelings for her are very strong. In our version of the music video we will commence filming an extreme close up of someone playing a cello and zoom out slowly, this will then end up in a long-shot of the band playing on a stage. This will be filmed in the Tithe Barn at Shiplake College and will be shown from a variety of angles throughout sections in the video.Another scene which we are filming is in a field in Waltham-Saint-Laurence. Here we will be filming our main guy who is going to be playing the part of the broken hearted man. We have chosen Tom for this part since he hit fits the description of a handsome looking guy with an edgy/ rugged side to him.
Treatment Tom will also play the part of the main singer in the band for continuity reasons. This is also so the target audience who can relate to this story believe that the band mean the story line when they are singing it, as well as making it more realistic. Tom will be in a field with his arms out, this will symbolize the emptiness he is feeling due to his broken heart. This will be shot from a high angle so we can see the emptiness of the field and him alone in the field which will symbolize how he is feeling; alone.them there is a scene in which we film in a house., this will be tom getting home from somewhere and walking into his house. He hears the TV on and see’s people’s shoes and clothes on the floor in the living room, after seeing this he runs upstairs to the bedroom just as he is about to open the door, the scene cuts back to the band playing in the Tithe Barn to create suspense. After this cut the image of him opening the door will be shot from a long-shot angle so we can see the girlfriends and lover’s expression when they are caught having an affair. The girl is wearing next to nothing to symbolize that she feels comfortable with her lover and that she is an unfaithful girl dressed provocatively .This then turns into a close up of the secret lover’s face looking very guilty and shocked, as he tries to get his clothes and runs out the door. However Tom is standing in the door way so he is blocked and then Tom punches him and runs out the house. We see him running down a mews and along houses which will be filmed in Marlow and ending up in the field were the other shots are taken. Tom running symbolizes that he wants to run away from everything happening and does not know where to go or what to do, he is just furious and can’t believe what he has just seen. As a beat in the song stops Tom breaks down and falls on the grass this is him realising what just happened and him feeling so bad and down that he literally can’t stand up because of his broken heart.
Treatment There will then be a bird’s eye shot of Tom lying on the grass next to his girlfriend who is fully dressed symbolising her innocence back when they were together, she then fades away and the imprint on the grass will be left. Tom is imagining what it was like when they were together, and then reality hits him when he is singing to no one except an imprint of her body left in the grass. The final shot will be the band playing in the Tithe Barn and the lights diming to finish the song.   Locations:   	The band performance will be shot in the Tithe Barn in Shiplake College. The filming in the house will be in Waltham-Saint-Lawrence, which is the bedroom and living room scene. The location of the field will also be in WSL, to show that he is alone and feels that way, when you break up from a long term relationship you feel alone most of the time. The scene were Tom is running though the mews and were we can see him running will be in Marlow since it has town houses and is close to where we are shooting our other scenes. Colour/Tone:   	The filming will be in colour to make it as realistic as possible since it talks about issues which most people can relate to and are very realistic issues which occur every day. The magazine CD advert will have the same colour scheme as the CD cover to imply continuity and consistency with the band’s image.
Treatment The Artist/ Style and Form:   	The colours warn by Tom will be black skinny jeans since black represents sadness. The jeans will be skinny since the stereotypical people who listen to “The Wanted” were that type of clothing as well as a chequered shirt since its indie style music. The shirt will be dark colours to symbolize angriness and darkness in his life. However it’s also a casual look since he is just coming back home on a regular day to find his lover cheating on him. The girl will be dressed in bright, happy colours when Tom is reminiscing in the field to show that they were happy together. In the bedroom neither of the actors have many clothes but the underwear will be black to show that they are doing something cynical and also because black in a seductive colour. We chose these locations since we don’t want to make the story more complicated, if he is living in a town it’s close to a field than if he was in a city. This would make the video look unrealistic since he won’t end up in a field next to a big city where he lives. The house is next to the locations therefore it will be easy for us to shot it without having to travel a long distance. In our music video will include flashbacks when he discovered that his girlfriend was cheating on him as well as flashbacks when they were in the lying in the grass together and she fades away. The house will show that the couple were serious since they lived together. The style of the video will be modern and up-to-date, however realistic. These characteristics are often what go into a conventional indie/hip-hop music video so we are going to follow them. For the CD cover the band’s name will be on it with an image of the band to show who they are and promote their image. They are an upcoming band, its better that they have their face on as many media platforms as possible to promote their image and popularity.
Treatment This will also consist of ratings which will be in the magazine advert as well as website links to their fan website. Record label details, tour dates and the release date of their CD will all be included in the magazine advert. The more information you give the public about them the popular they will get in a shorter amount of time.    Mise-en-scene:   	The town will symbolise the simplicity of their lives and how everything is merry. As well as the house, this is a nice simple house with a TV and ordinary household objects. The Field will represent his loneliness and how he feels after he finds out that his girlfriend is cheating on him. The Tithe Barn will be represented as a performance clip since the video is a mix between this and a narrative clip. This will be an area in which they are performing; however there is no audience just the band. The lighting will be outdoors and when the music video ends the lights will dim to represent how he feels and to show that the song has ended. The clothing will represent how the artist feels and the girl’s clothing will represent how she is, in a pretty outfit (leggings and a top) when she was with him, however she is only wearing black provocative underwear in bed when she is cheating on Tom, this will represent her being unfaithful and changed as a person because she is no longer innocent.
Treatment Target audience:   Our target audience are both males and females aged between 16 and 25. The reason why it can be for both genders is because we all feel more or less the same way when we find out that our other half whom we have had a long relationship with had been unfaithful. Between the ages of 16 to 25 is when people have the most break ups with relationships so they would relate to the video more. When you are younger than 16 you don’t really experience real love therefore it hard for them to relate to the video. The song will be for all ethnicities since most cultures can relate to it on some degree. Every type of culture would have related it to them in some ways weather it’s a friends who has been unfaithful to someone or the other way round, it could just be a movie you have seen therefore can understand what the person is feeling. The song will target people of all social classes from upper class to lower class. This is because no matter what class you are in the same problems can occur to everyone at any point in someone life. We have done a questionnaire on a website called “the student room” which will apply to all classes of people. The student room is for students finding answers and asking questions to other students that they don’t specifically know for help. We have also made a questionnaire to hand out to other members of the college between those ages to get an idea of what they think of the video. Since members of our school are more or less the same class of people, to get a good variety of answers we are going to hand them out to random people we come across. This will give us a wider range of social class and different groups of ethnicity.
Treatment Form our research we have discovers that people prefer a mix of narrative and performance clip as well as the story board to relate to the music video and not something random. We will have many conventional things in our video such as the location and the story line. So many indie/Hip-Hop songs are about love and people making or breaking up.

Audience ResearchQuestionnaire
Data Obtained from Questionnaire From the question: “Describe what you expect in a pop/rock music video?” people’s answerers were varied from: Lots of things happening such as sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Entertaining A band and hot girls Women in bikinis Performance with story line running along with it Singer performing to a story – singer to look sexy/attractive Screaming/ shouting Fast edits, special effects and atmospheric lighting Entertaining and lively A guitar Black being the dominant colour
Evaluation/ Analysis of Questionnaire From the results of the questionnaire we can establish that many people would prefer the story line to coordinate with the video. The target audience also prefer a mix of a narrative and performance video therefore we have decided to do the same in our music video. Our target audience also prefer a realistic music video with some abstract bits in it to make it more interesting. Therefore we are going to make our storyline realistic with many edits, we are coordinating it with the data obtained from the questionnaire. There is also going to be a guitar and the colour black in the video like the target audience wants. The black will symbolise sadness and impurities.
Research and planning After doing all our planning, once we came to actually shooting the scenes for the music video we did not use the exact story board. We no longer needed to use the tithe barn, we shot outside were we shot the rest of the video. This suited the video more since the lighting was the same.
Location Shots
CD Cover Drafts Here is my CD cover drafts, the first image is the band sitting on a fence with a field in the background which would be consistent with our video of “All Time Low” when the main singer is in the field singing about his heartache. It also has the barcodes on it to make it look like the shop has sold it to a customer. The second potential CD cover is the name of the band in big writing with some ratings of the album and the name of the most popular singles on it to attract people who like these songs.
CD Cover Draft I took the shaped of a CD cover and added all the information to it. I will then place the image of band on the white background. From the first draft I realised that the name of the album was not included so I added it to complete the CD cover. I kept the same theme of the magazine draft by keeping the writing in black.
Final CD covers I have asked my target audience which one they preferred out of the coloured CD cover and the black and white one. The results came out that 38% of the people I asked preferred the coloured CD cover and 62% preferred the black and white CD cover. From these statistic I have chosen to use the black and white CD cover as my final one.
CD cover draft I have inserted a barcode to make the CD look realistic. The barcode shows that the CD was sold from a shop since they would have to scan it to get the price. The name of the CD is “The Scandal” to make it dramatic and appealing to the target audience. I have kept the same black theme as the magazine cover since I believe its simple and effective and my target audience like it. The writing of the singles is at an angle to make the album look interesting as well as giving it depth. It makes it more visually interesting since there are a variety of fonts as well as angles and shadows. I have also changed my actors to people we used in the video so the CD cover and music video contain the same people. I used the same idea as previous with the type of clothes they have to were as well as the scenery. Here is my final CD cover.
Magazine Advert Drafts This is the drafts of the CD cover advert that will be placed in a magazine. I have drawn a couple to see which one I prefer as well as which my target audience prefer.
Magazine Advert Drafts These are two more CD advert which could potentially go into the magazine advert for my CD cover. I have inserted the websites and tour dates to make it look more realistic as well as having an image of the main singer on the page whether its on the CD cover or on the advert. I have also inserted the ratings given by different news papers and music channels.
Magazine drafts Here I have added where the ratings came from, inserting two popular names associated with top of the chart music. This will catch the target audience’s attention encouraging they to buy the album.
Magazine draft A step further I inserted a comment in red so it would stand out the most. I changed the font of the red quote to make it look like an official stamp. The angle of the quote is tilted which also makes it stand out more since the rest of the text is straight. My magazine advert is formal and effective since the white stands out on the black. Its simple and has all the necessary information. You look at an advert for an average of 4 seconds therefore its important that it catches your eye and leaving you wanting to buy the product. If the advert has to much information or is to busy looking reader will either ignore it or are not curious about the product.
Final Magazine Draft From the result that I got from my target audience I have placed the black and white picture on the magazine advert. It stands out since the CD cover is the main subject of this advert. The red writing is the most bold colour on this advert therefore it stands out. The red writing is a tag line which will be a unique selling point since people are eager to find out what the “Best British” band will be. I have changed its positioning to avoid it being on top of the writing on the CD cover. The star rating isalso going to help people want to buy the album since the are high – 5 out of 5 starts must mean it’s a good album, this is hopefully what the reader will think and encourages them to buy the album. I have also made the picture slightly larger since it’s the main point about this advert.

Digipak From these Digipak we can see that the artist is used for image of the front and back cover of the album. There is also lots of CD covers which do not contain the image of the band or artist. However I am going to put the image of my band therefore I researched the ones with the artist on it. From these Digipak we can see that the picture on the front cover is larger than the image on the back. They use a medium close up for the front cover and a long shot for the back cover.
Digipak This is my final Digipak, I used the same front cover as my magazine advert, for the back of the CD I took a picture of the band’s back. I thought this would look good as well as making sense since it’s the back of their album cover. For the inside panes I have used a nature theme to carry the same theme as I started of with which was a picture of the band in a field. Our music video also has the band singing in a field, therefore it is an ongoing theme. I have used a long shot for the from cover, and an extreme long shot for the back picture. The inside panes consist of a extreme close up and a medium shot of the tree.

My Life music video analysis

  • 1. A2 Media PRE- PRODUCTION
  • 2. 3 Music Video Analysis My life by The Game Ft. • 3. • 4.
  • 17. Treatment Form our research we have discovers that people prefer a mix of narrative and performance clip as well as the story board to relate to the music video and not something random. We will have many conventional things in our video such as the location and the story line. So many indie/Hip-Hop songs are about love and people making or breaking up.

[DIAGETIC] [NON-DIAGETIC] [MIX] WHAT IS THE BIGGEST FACTOR IN GETTING YOU TO BUY NEW MUSIC? [ADVERT] [ARTIST] [SONG] [VIDEO] HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS? [ ] DESCRIBE WHAT YOU EXPECT IN A POP/ROCK MUSIC VIDEO? [ ]
  • 39. Research and planning After doing all our planning, once we came to actually shooting the scenes for the music video we did not use the exact story board. We no longer needed to use the tithe barn, we shot outside were we shot the rest of the video. This suited the video more since the lighting was the same.

  • 44. CD Cover Draft I took the shaped of a CD cover and added all the information to it. I will then place the image of band on the white background. From the first draft I realised that the name of the album was not included so I added it to complete the CD cover. I kept the same theme of the magazine draft by keeping the writing in black.
  • 47. Magazine Advert Drafts This is the drafts of the CD cover advert that will be placed in a magazine. I have drawn a couple to see which one I prefer as well as which my target audience prefer.
  • 49. Magazine drafts Here I have added where the ratings came from, inserting two popular names associated with top of the chart music. This will catch the target audience’s attention encouraging they to buy the album.
