Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
We did the preliminary task to understand more about how to use some of the equipment
and how to shoot a film. We made our own short, simple film and then edited it. I found this
task very simple, I also helped me gain more experience using the equipment needed. I found
after using the equipment it gave me a lot of confidence for me to use more angles and
suggest a lot of shots when actually filming our sequence
I will now show you what I have learnt after doing the preliminary task and also how I applied
this to our production.
3. 180 DEGREE RULE
This rule basically tells us how we should be filming in order to keep the audience aware of
what is going on and where the characters actually are. The 180 Degree Rul, is a rule that
means there is an imaginary line connecting both characters. To be able to follow this rule
you cannot pass this line otherwise it is called crossing the line which will lead the audience
confused.
We did use this rule when doing our final task when Jake Fava is standing at the opposite side
of the bed. Elisha being on the bed. We shot through Jakes legs and kept the camera on the
next shots on the left hand side for Jake to walk past, so that we know exactly where in the
room he is and what is going on.
6. ESTABLISHING SHOT
This video shows exactly what establishing shots are. Establishing shots show the audience the
where the scene is taking place and who is to occur in the scene. In our sequence we used the
establishing shot right at the beginning where Elisha is in the shower. We also did the
establishing shot when Elisha was sat in the living room watching television. We first did the
establishing shot as a practice when doing our preliminary task, and we put it right at the
beginning.
7. ESTABLISHING SHOT
In the preliminary you can clearly see the appearance and the clothing of the characters in
the shot, whereabouts they are and what kind of environment they are in. By using this shot I
have learnt how critical it is for the audience to know exactly where the characters are and
the environment because otherwise the audience will lose interest and turn the film away.

8. CLOSE UP
Close up:
We used close ups in our preliminary task because we thought that they were such a crucial
part of what would be our film. This is because the close up shows the eye contact of the
characters and also the emotion on their faces. In our film we used this when Elisha is in the
shower and she lifts head. What I have learnt from this is when doing a close up; you need the
camera to be as still as possible. If there is a bit of movement it can distort the audience. So
during our preliminary we had to practice keeping the camera still and using the tripod as well
to keep the camera still. I also learnt from this that you should never say “cut” straight after
filming, you need to wait at least5 seconds before. We used the close up from the film “I spit
on your grave” and tried to make it as close as possible.
