3. OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to create a symbol of their
assigned plant or animal, and write a public service
announcement (PSA) that uses their symbol to
inform people about the Amazon and whether it
should be saved.
4. PART I: GIVING VOICE
After finding an illustration of your Amazon
plant/animal, use what you have learned to create a
symbol that represents that plant/animal. To create
an effective symbol, complete the following.
5. AN EFFECTIVE SYMBOL SHOULD:
• attract positive attention from people
• accurately represent the plant or animal you
researched
• have a name that makes people think of
the Amazon rain forest
• be colorful
• be neat
6. TO CREATE YOUR SYMBOL, CONSIDER THE
FOLLOWING OPTIONS.
• a two-dimensional political cartoon
character for use in print media
• a two-dimensional graphic character for use in
electronic media
• a three-dimensional representation for use
in video media
7. AFTER CREATING YOUR SYMBOL, WRITE A
SUMMARY THAT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:
• the name of the plant or animal on which
your symbol is based
• the name you have given your symbol
• a statement of intent that describes how your
symbol will be used to convince people of whether
the Amazon rain forest should be saved.
8. PART II: WRITING A PUBLIC SERVICE
ANNOUNCEMENT
Use what you have learned about the Amazon rain
forest and your symbol to create a public service
announcement (PSA) that informs people about the
Amazon rain forest and whether it should be saved
using the following format.
9. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS MUST
INCLUDE:
1. A script: A script shows each character’s dialogue
and actions. For this PSA, your symbol will serve
as a character.
2. Statements that describe the importance of the
Amazon rain forest and whether it should be
saved.
3. A description of the consequences of saving or not
saving the Amazon rain forest.
Use the model below to write the script for the PSA.
Setting: A description of where the character is during the PSA.
Character name: Dialogue (what the character says).
13. YOUR REFLECTIONS UPON THE ASSIGNMENT. HOW DID
THIS ASSESSMENT TOOL COMPARE WITH A
STANDARDIZED TEST, FOR EXAMPLE? WHAT DID YOU
LEARN BY THE EXPERIENCE?
The assignment really brought out the creative side
of all the students. They wrote great script that
displayed mastery of the animal researched and of
the value of the Amazon Rain Forest to the entire
human population. The objective was reached. The
only draw back was the amount of time spent on
the research. This was small price to pay for the
enjoyment and ownership for the their learning that
the students displayed. This assessment involved
the other forms of intelligence that we have forgot
that exists. I feel empowered that the students were
being assessed and were actually enjoying it.
14. RUBRIC FOR THE PRESENTATION
