We are seeing a transformation in how social capital is created and the impacts of it are going are global.
A preliminary presentation on early stages of research on this for my MBA MRE.
Social capital is not dead as Putnam states in article, they have moved to online, and I argue are providing social capital much more capable of CED The Benefits of Facebook "Friends:" Social Capital and College Students' Use of Online Social Network Sites, Nicole B. Ellison, Charles Steinfield . Cliff Lampe Online SNSs support both the maintenance of existing social ties and the formation of new connections. Putnam wasn't wrong, just didn't know, he couldn't see into the future, he saw a dead bear, dead flower, he didn't see a hibernating bear waking up or a perenial flower come back
Isn't that what CED is / should be – ALL inclusive without limitations?
Individuals do not just exchange information through on-line endeavors, they build relationships. Adrienne Lattery , From Bowling Leagues, BBQs, and Potluck Dinners to Bits, Bytes, and Motherboards Nicole B. Ellison, Charles Steinfield . Cliff Lampe a 2006 Pew Internet survey reports that online users are more likely to have a larger network of close ties than non-Internet users, and that Internet users are more likely than non-users to receive help from core network members ( Boase , Horrigan , Wellman, & Rainie , 2006). Online social network tools may be of particular utility for individuals who otherwise have difficulties forming and maintaining both strong and weak ties.
Bridging social capital might be augmented by such sites, which support loose social ties, allowing users to create and maintain larger, diffuse networks of relationships from which they could potentially draw resources ( Donath & boyd , 2004; Resnick , 2001; Wellman et al., 2001). Donath and boyd (2004) hypothesize that SNSs could greatly increase the weak ties one could form and maintain, because the technology is well-suited to maintaining such ties cheaply and easily.
“Were it not for the Internet, Barack Obama would not be president. Were it not for the Internet, Obama would not have been the nominee.” said Arianna Huffington, editor in chief of The Huffington Post. Not just about politics, but it is about finding leaders, community leaders and giving them a voice
Nicole B. Ellison, Charles Steinfield. Cliff Lampe Nie (2001),argued that Internet use detracts from face-to-face time with others, which might diminish an individual's social capital. strong criticism (Bargh & McKenna, 2004). Moreover, some researchers have claimed that online interactions may supplement or replace in-person interactions
to assess the full impact of the Internet on social capital, researchers need to develop new forms of measurement to harmonize with existing ones ( Quan-Haase & Wellman, 2002). Not obviously measurable, but it will become measureable – technology and systems are already there It's not measured on 'success' it's measure on action which is what ced is and it's has learning opportunities because it's in a open accessible format – even the failures, not just success like a local club activity would be, everyone ced org can now learn and improve upon other ced activities --- and get inspired into action
I will look at how ced works from this
To this
And how do we measure it. My research and essay are sending me in the direction to answer two things not yet discussed: Although research does say that social capital can be created through SNS, minus a few nay- sayers , it doesn’t talk about how social capital is changing because of SNS. I challenge that the biggest impact SNS are having on SC is t he impact of social capital is moving from local to global. And to this point in time, there is still no way of proving how social capital exists and it’s impact through SNS, so I work to develop a way to measure the extent of SC created through SNS.
