3. Intro – why plastic?
Everywhere around us we can see, use and
consume plastic
Most foods bought, products, etc.
“It costs US$ 4,000 to recycle 1 ton of plastic bags
and you get a product that can be sold on
commodities market for US$ 32. We must stop this
use because recycling is not viable. […]
Every year, 6.4 million tons of plastic are dumped
into the ocean. This is the same as an extension
of 3,200 kilometers of trucks fully loaded with
garbage.” – Ocean Crusaders
Our primary focus on cups and bottles
11. First Issues
Bad luck Brian
Water fountains take too
long/unpractical
Graded bottle doesn’t fit
underneath any water
machine at Graded
Took out plastic on hottest
days of São Paulo
13. New Problem
Ideal machine (Brastemp)
Subscription
Graded administration prefers a single, upfront
cost, rather than an ongoing monthly cost
New proposal - research
Option 1 Option 2
14. 1st Step
Bring in 2 units for testing of Option #2
New Issues
Water button doesn’t stop correctly
Water falls on floor and makes a mess
(if not used properly)
16. Fail – only minor improvement
Reconsider solutions
Bucket underneath
Rug
Cut the water exit
Buy machine Option #1
Buckets aren’t aesthetically
pleasing
Modifying machine wasn’t
approved
Option #1 wasn’t judged
practical
SOLUTION
Graded rugs underneath
Are currently working well
17. More Problems
Sparkling water
Can’t be sold in snack bar because of plastic bottle
Solution #1
Turn water into sparkling water in seconds
Can be made into soda pop if added with flavor
18. Solution # 2
Glass bottles for sparkling water
Expensive
Had to have special
disposable place around
school in order to recycle
its glass
Small children could
possibly get hurt with these
bottles
19. More problems
Gatorade/Powerade is sold in plastic bottles
Not easily accessible in São Paulo (refills)
Students would need to either have to use
the same bottle for Gatorade and water,
or have a spare bottle
Unpractical
Gatorade still is sold in snack bar until
further changes are implemented
Solution
20. Disposable Cups Issue
When visitors come around, they don’t have the
obligation to always have water bottles
We can’t have disposable plastic cups
Could make available reusable plastic cups
But quantities wouldn’t be high, and we’d have to
wash them constantly
21. Solutions
Water fountains
Don’t need any cups
Eco-friendly disposable cups
Paper used in fabrication come from reforested
wood and is produced with 100% of virgin fibers
Has brownish color because it dispenses whitening
chemicals that are bad for ones health
22. Progress so far
Remove plastic cups from campus
Bring in practical way of filling in water
Disposable cups for visitors who don’t have bottles?
In progress
Stop selling plastic bottles in snack bar
Gatorade?
Still being sold
Sparkling water?
In progress
23. Quick activity
3 volunteers
Try your best to compress a plastic bottle into a
small piece
Roughly find area
Now imagine this, times 564 billion
Assuming an average bottle has a 3.5 cm radius
and a height of 20 cm, the space taken up of
ONE bottle could be up to 770 cm3
770 cm3 x 564 billion bottles a year = A lot
434,280,000,000,000 cm3 or 434 TRILLION cm3 of
an extension of plastic used only in bottles per
year
24. When we say “exterminate
plastic…”
Ok, so now you guys and girls get a rough idea of what NOT to do
On a more serious note…
25. Repercussion
Initially, ideas might be rejected when presented
Gradually are accepted by our community
Still had some repercussion
Our duty
Make people understand the reasons
Why are we showing all these methods?
So you can apply them and create a better
community that surrounds you
26. Our goal
“Be the change you
want to see in the
world.”
Think globally, act
locally
Contribute your drop
We can do this, but
most importantly, you
can do this
Each person says their own nameYes, this is the one and only plastic man
PauloLose quality when recycling plastic: one level down
1.36 billion kilos of plasticLeoKevinExercize: ask for 1/5 of people to stand up; then 4/5 to stand up; talk about how much waste we generate just with plastic bottles

AnniepolloWe want to further more increase the green line and decrease the blue and red lines
LeoHad idea, perfected it by seeing in another schoolEach month the snack bar uses more or less R$960.00 in water bottles, that’s R$11,520 per year. The plastic cups located all over campus have a price of R$4,750.00 per semester. That’s a lot of money we could save.

LeoGood material but not too expensive, we were looking for something like thisEach month the snack bar uses more or less R$960.00 in water bottles, that’s R$11,520 per year. The plastic cups located all over campus have a price of R$4,750.00 per semester. That’s a lot of money we could save. There are around 1,600 people on campus, which means we either buy 1500 bottles or 2000. The price for 1,500 Aluminum Bottles costs from R$14,000.00-R$16,000.00, and the prices are subject to changes depending on when we buy it, while the price for 2,000 bottles is from R$18,500.00-R$19,100.00, also subject to change. This may seem like a load of money but if you think about it we would actually save money. Without the water bottles at the snack bar and no plastic cups that’s around R$21,020 per year. We would save at least R$2000 by buying the bottles, and this is just in the first year. In the next years we would only need to buy about 200 bottles for the new students, staff, and faculty members at Graded. Imagine how much money we would have after just the first year; over R$20,000 to use to help improve other parts of the school.
PolloConvenient bottle, little hanger, thermal (talk about cold), color red, eagle, final design looked pretty appealing
PauloBut was implemented in hottest day of saopaulo
kevinWe wanted to replace these water gallon machines into machines that could fit the graded water bottle, and other ones, too. Also, we found out that in some cases, the plastic from the gallons could make the water taste differently, making it impure. The best thing to do was to find a good water purifier, with good size, replace these.
paulo
PolloCouldn’t rely on people making a mess, had to take action (enrola, enrola, enrola, dig deep)
annie
paulo
pauloNot practical because people would theoretically take long to do it and could potentially make a mess.
LeoSófala ascoisasque a gentetentoufazer, e como voce foiatras e quefoiaprovadoporvariaspessoas mas no final naodeixaram
KevinAthletes need gatorade/power ade; picture this after game, etc. etc. etc.
TanayThe way cafeteria washes cups involves waters at high temperatures and a lot of effort to make them available every day in lunch
LeoWe are replacing/putting new water fountains that are accessible for for those with special conditions or disabilitiesCould leave only water fountains, but some people would prefer the water from the machines, so we bring e-coposAlthough graded water is all filtered and water fountains taste perfectly fine, we wanted to make more things available.
PolloTouch on key elements we cited

KevinGet people to feel it man, make it profound so I can lead up with our kick ass closing thought
Paulo flecha(by the way, I had done this presentation before we’d heard people using this quote the whole day of yesterday)Listen. First of all, I want to make something clear. When you, yourself, yes, you, recycle a water bottle, or restrains from buying plastic cups, or do anything related to what we are saying here, honestly, you’re not actually saving the planet. Don’t be convinced that by buying a reusable water bottle you’ll make the ocean stop having an area of plastic bottles that could cover twice the size of texas entirely. That’s not what we’re trying to promote here. But what we are aiming for is something much greater.First, as a brilliant man would say, be the change you want to see in the world. Take this seriously. Don’t see this as a quote. When you make a choice, a simple choice, of doing one of these things, no matter how insignificant it might appears to you, you’re doing much more than it seems. For example, when you implement reusable aluminum bottles in the place of plastic for yourself, after what you’ve seen in the presentation, for a start, it is already good. And we are aiming so that when you walk out of that door, you feel motivated to do so, because by acting on your own and being the change you want to see in the world, you will influence those around you.I’m not concerned with how many plastic cups you’re able to keep yourself from buying. But what I’m really concerned with is how, by acting a certain way, you’ll take this back to your school, maybe even change around the minds of your friends and lead them into trying one of these ideas, that maybe will even go to the head of your school or institution so THEY can implement these ideas, and kids who start helping out can influence their families, and households, and so on and so forth. So my final message to you is: don’t be concerned whether or not you are saving the world. But do make sure that you do your part, and you contribute your drop to the global effects we are fighting against. Thank you for your time. We are graded gin’s plastic group.
