2. Onam
Onam is the biggest and ancient festival
celebrated in kerela. It is the harvest
festival and also marks the beginning of the
year called chingam, which is the first month
in malayalam calender and falls between
august and september months. It is
celebrated for 10 days with huge and grand
activities all over the state of kerela.
3. History of Onam
Onam also marks the homecoming of Legendary King
Mahabali, who ruled kerela in ancient times. That
was said to be a Golden era of Kerela. It is believed
that Mahabali, got a boon from god that he can visit
the people every year.
4. Celebrations
Onam is celebrated for ten days - First day is
Atham and Thiruvonam is the last day of the
celebration. Pepole will put “Pookalam” in
front of their house and decorate the house
to welcome mahabali, and they wear new
dresses and youngers ones get blessings from
elders, special poojas will also be arranged
early morning in temples.
5. Highlights of Onam
Thripunithura athachamayam is the colorful start of onam, which is
the street parade with elephants, musicians, and many kerela art
forms. And the maharaja of kochi used to march from Tripunithura to
Vamanamoorthy Temple in Thrikkakara, where the onam festival is
originated.
Stage shows including classical and folk dances, art forms, drama,
handicraft fairs will be arranged in a grand manner.
Festival is not fully filled without food. Specially for onam, people will
prepare 21 curries dished up in banana leaf.
The Aranmula Boat Race is the most famous one, nearly 50 boats take
part in the race, which will get started after the ritual got complete
and the important thing which is focussed is tradition not the
competition.
Pulikkali Tiger play is another important celebration, where the people
will paint like tiger and dance and highlight the celebrations.
