The Cold War - Episode 1 - Segura
1. ● 1917 to 1945
● At Potsdam outside Berlin, the big three met to settle the post-war order
● Churchill - Britain
● Stalin - Soviet Union
● Truman - USA
● Stalin was a day late since he had some kind of heart attack and apologized for it
● Woodrow Wilson's peace settlement excluded Russia ¿Why did he do this?
● People in America were now relaxed and seeking a much more peaceful life with no
more foreign entanglements.
● in 1929 - Wall Street crashed and the great depression began. Suddenly the richest
nation on Earth faced destitution.
● Roosevelt promised a new deal for Americans.
● Stalin's industrial drive soon attracted American experts, some brought their families.
● Heavy industries output doubled in ten years
● Stalin believed that in order to get public support for the things he was doing which
were very harsh policies he had to convince a great many of the people the common
people and the party members that Russia was confronted with a conspiracy on the
part of the major capitalist powers to undermine the Soviet Unión government by
espionage
● Even in America, thousands stayed loyal to the communist dream
● 1930s - Moscow called for a popular front of the left against Hitler and fascism
● Roosevelt was actually seeking to keep out of any European war.
● September 1938 - Chamberlain flew to Munich, war seemed close as Germany
prepared to invade Czechoslovakia, but Chamberlain went determined to appease
Hitler. ¿What does 'appease' mean?
● The fascist and communist archenemies we're about to embrace
● On June the 22nd, Hitler invaded the Soviet Unión.
● America declared war on Japan, with the veil marked at the gates of Moscow, Hitler
rashly declared war on the USA, making Russian and Americans allies.
● ¿What was considered the "straw that that broke the camel's back" for the cold
war?
● Germans were trapped and forced to surrender, the tide of war was turning.
● A photographer was so traumatized that till that day he was able to hear the noises of
war and see the flashes bullets made, as well as people screaming.
● 4000 thousand polish officers had been murdered by the soviet unión, as Germany
revealed. Britain and America decided to ignore those methods that were used by
Stalin.
● 1943 - The Big Three prepared to reunite in Tehran, in Persian.
● The allies agreed that post-war Eastern Europe would be a Soviet zone of influence.
Stalin would annex eastern Poland, and as compensation the poles would get a slice
of eastern Germany, Poland was offered no choice. The Big Three mapped out the
future.
● D-Day, 6th of June of 1944, the biggest seaborne invasion in history lands in France.
● On the eastern front, Russian armies continued to advance. They eventually reached
Wa…… (?) and conquered it.
2. ● 1945 - In Franklin Roosevelt’s memorial the guards put him inside of a train’s wagon
and eventually drove him around the states of USA, where people stood silently just
showing their emotions to who had move their hearts.
● As he was buried, the las battles in Europe were ending.
● American and Russian troops would meet, aiming for and end of war.
● Despite the fact that they were from different types of armies, the US soldiers had
very friendly expressions when they found the Russian soldiers across the river.
● For the Russians, now that they had met the Americans, the war was over. They met
in the Elbe River, where they ran a meeting of ordinary soldiers.
● The capture of Berlin was left for the Russians.
● April 1945 - The red army launched their last offense in Berlin, which cos 27 million
lives of innocent germans. The red flag waved over the reichstag, a handmade flag.
● As Hitler’s reich fell apart, hundreds gathered in san francisco to found the UNO, the
soviet delegation sign was left to molotov, who was very nervous for it.
● As this meeting continued, news came from Germany surrendered to the United
Nations.
● The soviet front line had cut europe in two.
● The war in the pacific went on however, American marines had stormed Iwo Jima, it
was a foretaste of how difficult and bloody the final invasion of Japan might be.
● Truman declared officially and quite sharply that the declaration on europe adopted
at Yalta is not been carried out in some countries. Governments were being set up
which the united states would not recognise.
● The Potsdam conference was a very bad-tempered conference overall.
● Stalin confirmed that his troops were ready for war with Japan, but the day before the
conference America had already tested a successful atomic bomb.
● The world saw that the allies were still united through a photo call, on August the 2nd
the conference ended and the Statesmen went home, 4 days later America dropped
an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan, three days after that, another one was
dropped on Nagasaki. From then onwards, everyone was scared that an atomic
bomb would be dropped on them if they got into a serious argument with any of the
main powers.

3 things I’ve learnt
I don’t know what to start with, I have learnt lots of things and now I have lots of new
information. However, it was very shocking to see how the Russian and American troops met
on opposite sides of the Elbe River, if I was them I would’ve probably shoot them by reflex.
Another shocking thing I learnt was the fact that in a period of time of 6 days USA dropped
not only one but two atomic bombs on Japan, completely destroying them and making a very
seriou rivalry between both countries. And lastly, it was very shocking to see how cold the
big three was as regards as feeling absolutely no empathy for their enemies at all.
2 things I have found interesting
To begin with, it was very interesting to see how out of the blue USA bombarded Japan.
Also, I found it very interesting to see how the American army improved overall ever since
the previous wars she was involved in.
3. 1 question I still have
I am still wondering where US took the resources to make two atomic bombs in less than a
week without being suspicious about it, as well as how they dropped them on Japan and
from which altitude they did so.
