Our Goals and Objectives
a) The goal and objectives are orientation of health care , creating of HIV/AIDS,STI &
poverty towards the most prevalent health needs and self reliance
    target area.

b) Control/Reducing of AIDS/STI and poverty existence by providing the necessary services
to this population i.e. awareness - education , counseling of the already affected people
/ their family and referring of those who have been infected to health and poverty
control institutions in addition to creating of employment and other self reliant
   options/measures among others.
Our Challenges
- Lack of Technical Support and capacity
  building for our members
- Lack of resources to empower the
  most vulnerable through sustainable
  projects.
- Lack of donor funding
The first step to good health is cleanliness and there is no way one can be physically clean where there
is no water. Water and sanitation (extreme poverty) have a direct relation with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

It is in this regard that we, Leo Community Development Network have realized the need to address
water and sanitation issues to help reverse the spread of this disease. As our mission partly states, that
we want to see an AIDS-free society now and in future, we want to contribute to this by ensuring that
each and every person has access to clean water.

We will not only have contributed to the fight against AIDS but also towards the realization of the UN
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

SITUATION BACKGROUND
Kiambiu slum in Nairobi,Kibera slum in Nairobi and Kogelo villiage in Siaya district in western Kenya,
they both have an area of 12 sq. kms in each with an overwhelming population of over 100,000 . They
are one of the densely populated areas in Nairobi and western Kenya. This population consists of
different communities from various parts of Kenya, majority of whom are jobless and those in
employment are lowly paid.

Due to widespread unemployment and low earnings among Kiambiu,Kibera and Kogelo village
residents, people here live below poverty lines, hence making it a slum area. As slums are not in the
Government and Local Authority plans, they do not benefit in the budgetary allocation and service
provision. Proper infrastructure is lacking thus leading to tough living conditions for an area with
congestion. The infrastructure is generally poor; no proper sanitation measures, no drainage system(s),
poor road network which becomes impassable during rainy seasons, and too dusty during dry spells.
Kiambiu,Kibera,Kogelo communities suffers numerous problems namely: -
i) Poverty
ii) Lack of infrastructure
iii) Diseases
iv) Ignorance on sanitation measures
v) Lack of civic education (semi-illiteracy)

i) Poverty
Most of Kiambiu Kibera,Kogelo residents live below poverty line. Evidence of marginalisation. Thousands
of school age children loiter on the streets, begging, scavenging or stealing for a living as their parents
cannot afford school fees. Some of them are orphans hence no one to bear the responsibilities. Most of
those affected by poverty are jobless youths either some of them have finished high schools and others
college.

ii) Lack of infrastructure
There is no infrastructure and whatever little there is, is underdeveloped and not serving the given
needs of the high population. But this report is confined to the basic infrastructure components which
are essential for promoting minimal health and environmental standards. These are sufficient water
supply, sanitation, drainage (systems) and solid waste disposal. Although we have water supply, it is not
sufficient to meet the daily needs of households. Due to these factors it has led people to be
incapacitated in their sanitation needs which affect their general grooming thus poor health.
Inadequate water supply is also facilitated by the habit of other landowners in rationing number of cans
one has to fetch. Sanitation is one area where there is general ignorance by the majority of the
community members. By this we mean that the people do not take into account the need for proper
sanitation measures. These is much evident in areas like latrines/latrines which are built near
roads/pathways and not well kept. Some residents relieve near roadsides and pathways resulting in
nauseating sights and foul smell. There is also lack of sufficient and proper drainage systems to deal
with drainage during the rainy seasons. The few which are available are poorly constructed and or they
are blocked thus beats the purpose of its construction. This has resulted to flooding on roads, pathways
and sometimes in houses because there is no outlet to the rainwater.

These has really hampered social stability and communication. The are produces tons of garbage
everyday and there is no dumping ground due to pressure on the existing land space. Also the City
Council has not provided plans or programmes to the collection of garbage. This has resulted to piles so
many feet high of accumulated garbage infested by worms and other vectors which pose health risk.

iii) Diseases
The health condition of the population has deteriorated due to the above-mentioned situation. These
has made aggravated by pools of stagnant muddy water which form the breeding grounds for disease
vectors like mosquitoes, bacteria, fungi and virus. Some of the most common diseases are malaria,
cholera, dysentery, skin diseases, etc. Also people contract waterborne diseases due to improper
measures of drinking water – the disease associated with this typhoid. The residents’ unhealthy habits
of alcoholism, drug abuse and gum sniffing (among teenagers) as well as pollution of the environment
adds to further complications. It has resulted to upper respiratory problems, weakness to the able-
bodied people and also high rate of dependency. The irony of it all is that most of the diseases can be
controlled by a clean environment and proper preventive measures.

iv) Lack of civic education and ignorance
There is a high rate of illiteracy and ignorance on sanitation measures. Also lacking is environmental
education and the ignorance of the surroundings. Parents’ inability to pay school fees has results in lack
of basic education needed to combat these situation of carelessness. Another issue is lack of institutions
which can provide the necessary education and try to eliminate the attitudes of ignorance amongst
residents and if they are, they are un-affordable to most people. Also lacking are trainers to sensitise
the community. To alleviate these pressing problems we must have qualified experts to deal with the
environment sanitation and related areas like the health sector.

  • 1. Leo Community Development Network (LECDEN-KENYA CHILDREN'S HOME) OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT WISH LIST Feed, Clothe & Educate the Poor, Imagine living in a squatter/slum/ village in a makeshift home constructed out of scrap metal and cardboard, with mud floors, and no electricity or water. Imagine raising your kids in this place with hardly any food to eat. This is the plight of squatters/slum/village in the in Kiambiu slum,Kibera slum and Kogelo village. No land, makeshift homes, little to eat, no work & no education for their children. Help make their lives a little brighter. 0ur Key Programmes/Actvities Key Intervention Strategies - Care & Support for families infected & - Counseling and Group Therapy Services affected with HIV/AIDS - Vocational trainings for older orphans - Care & Support for Children orphaned by - Home based care , Nutrition care , HIV/Aids and girl Child Capacity Building. Medical - Environment Awareness, Water & Care Sanitation Programmes (Slum Upgrading - Community Educational Programmes Initiatives) through capacity building - Poverty Eradication through income - Establishment of Community Based
  • 2. Generating Groups activities (I.G.A) for sustainable livelihood to sustain development agenda - Awareness Campaign on health & Drug - Community Mobilization & Advocacy Abuse Programmes - Youth & Population Awareness Programmes - Outreach Forums (Reproductive health). - Drama Programmes especially for the Our Goals and Objectives a) The goal and objectives are orientation of health care , creating of HIV/AIDS,STI & poverty towards the most prevalent health needs and self reliance target area. b) Control/Reducing of AIDS/STI and poverty existence by providing the necessary services to this population i.e. awareness - education , counseling of the already affected people / their family and referring of those who have been infected to health and poverty control institutions in addition to creating of employment and other self reliant options/measures among others. Our Challenges - Lack of Technical Support and capacity building for our members - Lack of resources to empower the most vulnerable through sustainable projects. - Lack of donor funding The first step to good health is cleanliness and there is no way one can be physically clean where there is no water. Water and sanitation (extreme poverty) have a direct relation with the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It is in this regard that we, Leo Community Development Network have realized the need to address water and sanitation issues to help reverse the spread of this disease. As our mission partly states, that we want to see an AIDS-free society now and in future, we want to contribute to this by ensuring that each and every person has access to clean water. We will not only have contributed to the fight against AIDS but also towards the realization of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). SITUATION BACKGROUND Kiambiu slum in Nairobi,Kibera slum in Nairobi and Kogelo villiage in Siaya district in western Kenya, they both have an area of 12 sq. kms in each with an overwhelming population of over 100,000 . They are one of the densely populated areas in Nairobi and western Kenya. This population consists of different communities from various parts of Kenya, majority of whom are jobless and those in employment are lowly paid. Due to widespread unemployment and low earnings among Kiambiu,Kibera and Kogelo village residents, people here live below poverty lines, hence making it a slum area. As slums are not in the Government and Local Authority plans, they do not benefit in the budgetary allocation and service provision. Proper infrastructure is lacking thus leading to tough living conditions for an area with
  • 3. congestion. The infrastructure is generally poor; no proper sanitation measures, no drainage system(s), poor road network which becomes impassable during rainy seasons, and too dusty during dry spells. Kiambiu,Kibera,Kogelo communities suffers numerous problems namely: - i) Poverty ii) Lack of infrastructure iii) Diseases iv) Ignorance on sanitation measures v) Lack of civic education (semi-illiteracy) i) Poverty Most of Kiambiu Kibera,Kogelo residents live below poverty line. Evidence of marginalisation. Thousands of school age children loiter on the streets, begging, scavenging or stealing for a living as their parents cannot afford school fees. Some of them are orphans hence no one to bear the responsibilities. Most of those affected by poverty are jobless youths either some of them have finished high schools and others college. ii) Lack of infrastructure There is no infrastructure and whatever little there is, is underdeveloped and not serving the given needs of the high population. But this report is confined to the basic infrastructure components which are essential for promoting minimal health and environmental standards. These are sufficient water supply, sanitation, drainage (systems) and solid waste disposal. Although we have water supply, it is not sufficient to meet the daily needs of households. Due to these factors it has led people to be incapacitated in their sanitation needs which affect their general grooming thus poor health. Inadequate water supply is also facilitated by the habit of other landowners in rationing number of cans one has to fetch. Sanitation is one area where there is general ignorance by the majority of the community members. By this we mean that the people do not take into account the need for proper sanitation measures. These is much evident in areas like latrines/latrines which are built near roads/pathways and not well kept. Some residents relieve near roadsides and pathways resulting in nauseating sights and foul smell. There is also lack of sufficient and proper drainage systems to deal with drainage during the rainy seasons. The few which are available are poorly constructed and or they are blocked thus beats the purpose of its construction. This has resulted to flooding on roads, pathways and sometimes in houses because there is no outlet to the rainwater. These has really hampered social stability and communication. The are produces tons of garbage everyday and there is no dumping ground due to pressure on the existing land space. Also the City Council has not provided plans or programmes to the collection of garbage. This has resulted to piles so many feet high of accumulated garbage infested by worms and other vectors which pose health risk. iii) Diseases The health condition of the population has deteriorated due to the above-mentioned situation. These has made aggravated by pools of stagnant muddy water which form the breeding grounds for disease vectors like mosquitoes, bacteria, fungi and virus. Some of the most common diseases are malaria, cholera, dysentery, skin diseases, etc. Also people contract waterborne diseases due to improper measures of drinking water – the disease associated with this typhoid. The residents’ unhealthy habits of alcoholism, drug abuse and gum sniffing (among teenagers) as well as pollution of the environment adds to further complications. It has resulted to upper respiratory problems, weakness to the able- bodied people and also high rate of dependency. The irony of it all is that most of the diseases can be controlled by a clean environment and proper preventive measures. iv) Lack of civic education and ignorance There is a high rate of illiteracy and ignorance on sanitation measures. Also lacking is environmental education and the ignorance of the surroundings. Parents’ inability to pay school fees has results in lack of basic education needed to combat these situation of carelessness. Another issue is lack of institutions
  • 4. which can provide the necessary education and try to eliminate the attitudes of ignorance amongst residents and if they are, they are un-affordable to most people. Also lacking are trainers to sensitise the community. To alleviate these pressing problems we must have qualified experts to deal with the environment sanitation and related areas like the health sector. DESCRIPTION OF BENEFICIARIES (BACKGROUND) LECDEN-KENYA started in 1998 formed of youthful community members who came together to identify, analyse, plan and mobilise the communities on issues of concerns. This shall be so due to the formation of the local grassroots co-ordination committee at the village level for over seeing the implementation process towards sustainability.. Lecden-Kenya real benefits to the community shall be: - i) Alleviation and prevention of the would-be diseases – malaria, dysentery and typhoid ii) Setting up of income generating activities related to environmental concerns like compost manure making and collection of recyclables wastes even engagement in recycling activities after the collection. iii) Improve drainage systems, iv) Provision of storage water in tanks in case of water shortage or rationing. v) Strengthen government relationship with the community for/ to be involved in the government development plan and other stakeholders. • 5. However, lecden-kenya is faced with some problems and challenges: - i) Lack of funds to implement planned organisational activities, mobilise the community on the upkeep of the environment. ii) Training of leaders and members in project management and necessary skills iii) Lack of income for lecden-kenya staff and volunteers iv) Lack of co-ordination centre v) Accumulation of uncollected garbage and continued lack of general sanitation vi) Lack of access to clean drinking water vii) Number of youths who are jobless loitering the streets. 1.
