• One of the challenges the working group has raised is what part
does L&D get to play in MOOCs for Learning. The answer may turn
out to be very different to what we do now.
• Currently MOOCs are predominantly available for certain topics ie
IT, Management, Science which only meet part of organisational
needs.
Some FAQs
• What about quality - See ratings
and reviews
• How will we capture learning -
Employees will self report with
completion certificates;
• Messages may be different from
company messages - No one is
saying it will be a company specific
course. Employees don't have to
spoon fed.
• How will employees find courses -
Search engines.
• What if the MOOC is discontinued -
Find another one or go back to the
usual way you plugged gap in the
current state.
• We cant get into our reporting -
Maybe . Is it that more important
than learning.

How big is the typical MOOC? -
while enrollment has reached up to
~180,000, 50,000 students enrolled is
a much more typical MOOC size.
•How many students complete
courses? - completion rates can
approach 20%, although most
MOOCs have completion rates of less
than 10%.

  • 1. Learning Cafe Call MOOCs in Corporate Training 23 July 2013 • MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses) can be a mainstream employee learning option. It offers cost effective solutions for organisations with the benefits far outweighing the challenges. L&D/HR need to be proactive in exploring and including MOOCs in learning strategies. 1

  • 19. Questions to Discuss • One of the challenges the working group has raised is what part does L&D get to play in MOOCs for Learning. The answer may turn out to be very different to what we do now. • Currently MOOCs are predominantly available for certain topics ie IT, Management, Science which only meet part of organisational needs.

Some FAQs • What about quality - See ratings and reviews • How will we capture learning - Employees will self report with completion certificates; • Messages may be different from company messages - No one is saying it will be a company specific course. Employees don't have to spoon fed. • How will employees find courses - Search engines. • What if the MOOC is discontinued - Find another one or go back to the usual way you plugged gap in the current state. • We cant get into our reporting - Maybe . Is it that more important than learning. 20 How big is the typical MOOC? - while enrollment has reached up to ~180,000, 50,000 students enrolled is a much more typical MOOC size. •How many students complete courses? - completion rates can approach 20%, although most MOOCs have completion rates of less than 10%.
