2. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry Roeder
Introduction to Edition One
In the 1970’s my mother came up with the idea that I should explore my family,
travel to the places we lived, learn how ancestors comported themselves. The
focus was to be on American locations so that I could learn more about the
United States and what it is to be an American, an excellent proposal since some
of my family on my Scots-Irish side lived in the colonies prior to the American
Revolution.
I decided to expand the study to include my German relatives and ancestors in
Germany; and that has been fantastically rewarding. For one thing, I’ve found
wonderful German relatives and have discovered a rich, interesting history about
a quite normal Germany family. This only partly tells their story, and I do hope to
add to it in later editions

I'm not sure of the spelling of the last name. If Ravensdorf, there are no birth or marriage
records in the registers of Hamburg. In fact, she might not be from Hamburg. That might only
be the port of embarkation for the United States. See letter to LWR, Jr. Oct 5, 1981 from Olcay,

Cyriak Röder
Cyriak was a master shoemaker who saw service in World Wars One and Two,
and may have been in militia at the end of World War One or a veteran’s group.
Cyriak’s father was Friedrich (Friedrid) Röder (married to Bibliana Scheuplein).
Friedrich was the brother of Anton Bauer modo Röder, great grandfather of Larry
Winter Roeder, Jr, the author.

One has the sense of a man of civic duty, simply because of the many times
Cyriak served in uniform, as a teenager and in both World Wars. Photos also
convey the image of a happy man.
I’d like to explore his potential role in the militia at end of World War One. We
have no details on it, except for Photo 7 which hints at it, and it’s entirely possible
he did not belong to such a group.
What we do know is that Germany in 1919 was close to collapse. In late October,
1918 the Navy planned one last big battle with the British fleet; but sailors in
Wilhelmshaven and Kiel mutinied, setting up councils similar to Russian soviets.
Within days the revolution spread to the Western front and Germany’s major
cities and ports. This became known as the November Revolution. The Kaiser
then abdicated, followed by the King of Bavaria. Bavaria declared a socialist
Republic, though not in the Russian mold. Chancellor, Max von Baden, handed
power to Friedrich Ebert, the leader of the German Social Democrat Party (SDP).
Due to the revolution, the Council of the People's Deputies (Rat der
Volksbeauftragten) was then government (Nov 1918-Feb 1919).
Communists were heavily involved but unlike in the Russian revolution, an
accommodation was made to blend the aristocracy into the new Germany. The
Council organized a ceasefire on 11 November, 1918 and the election of a
National Assembly in December. The leading political party (SPD) also refused to
go the route of Russian soviets because of mistrust of the Bolsheviks. In
addition to all of this was the risk of a full scale armed uprising, and indeed there
was the Sparticist uprising, putdown by right-wing militia or Freikorps. Then on
August 11, 1919, the revolution ended with the establishment of the Weimar
15

Constitution. It was a time demanding much from the civic minded. We don’t
know if Cyriak was part of this; but would be interesting to learn.

Cyriak Röder 1915
Date: 1915 Location Unknown. Title: In Uniform Standing by Wall
Picture Description: (Front of a postcard) The uniform is an M1915 Tunic.
I was under the impression that
cross was an Iron Cross; but
according to one sources, Cyriak
was a reservist (hence the cross
on his cap in the 1915 dated
photo) (which means he would
not be sent to the front unless the
war went really bad) Reservists
guarded train stations, ammo
dumps etc.

Figure 10 Closeup of Cyriak's Head in Uniform
Cyriak may have won the Iron Cross. Is it possible he simply placed it in his hat?
I did a little research and did find an example of someone else doing this on
Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, “During WWI, approximately 218,000 EKIs,
5,196,000 EKIIs and 13,000 non-combatant EKIIs were awarded. Exact numbers
of awards are not known, since the Prussian military archives were destroyed
during World War II. “ But what about Bavarian archives?
An expert I consulted didn’t feel that the Iron Cross would have been worn in this
way. His comment was “At first glance, given the date of birth in 1874, the soldier was
serving with the Landsturm or Landwere, aka Home Guard, during WW1, and serving in
an active regiment in 1895-1897. He would have been 40 years old in 1914, and too old
for active or reserve units, but of the age for the Landsturm and Landwere.
23
24. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry Roeder
An able bodied German owed military service from the age of 17 to 41. At age 21, a
German would go into the active army for 2 or 3 years. Then there was a period of time
for the reserves. After the reserves was the Landsturm and Landwere, where those
younger than 21 and older than 30 would serve at times of great emergency, such as a
war. I need to check on the details of the Landsturm and Landwere.
They guarded rail road yards, prison camps and supply depot, generally in Germany,
but sometimes in the rear areas in occupied Belgium, France and Russia later in the
war. They made use of obsolete rifles and uniforms, as well as captured rifles. They
performed important military work, and the work they performed allowed younger men
to serve on the front lines. As the war went on, the ages for military service were
extended to 14 year olds, and any able bodied man of any age. At the very end, some
12 year old boys had been called up.
I will check some reference books tonight and see if I can get some more info for you.
I did not see any rank insignia, but will check more closely tonight. The iron cross was
never worn on the hat, only on the chest. It is possible that some of the photos were
from the early post war period, when there was a lot of chaos, and a number of
volunteer units of ex-soldiers and civilians did what they could to maintain order. The
ex-soldier units were loosely known as friekorps. (Reiley, 2012)”

Cyriak Röder With Veterans
Date: (not clear)
Location: Not clear. Description: Veterans or Civil Guard from World War One
(Front of postcard)
Cyriak was a Kriegsteilnehmer or Veteran of the First World War; but
whereas other photos showed him in real uniforms, this series shows
him is less formal dress, though with a weapon.
The handwriting on the back was hard to read, being in an old script;
but I asked a professional, and he told it indicated this is a group of
veterans making a souvenir shot of the Civil guard.

An expert informed that the script said “Erinnerung an die Lohnwache

Lohnwache {civil guard} to the war of the peoples 1914. Start 1
August End Oct. 1918. The word Lohnwache isn’t used any more and
can be Vigilante Service.
(Bartleby, 2012). The back of the card was written in Sütterlinschrift
(German pronunciation: [ˈzʏtɐliːnˌʃʁɪft], so I had to retain a
professional to translate. “Sütterlin script) is the last widely used
form of Kurrent, the old German blackletter handwriting. Graphic
artist Ludwig Sütterlin was commissioned by the Prussian ministry
for culture to create a modern handwriting script in 1911. His
handwriting scheme gradually replaced the older cursive scripts that
33
34. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry Roeder
had developed in the 16th century at the same time that book letters
developed into Fraktur. The word Sütterlin is nowadays often used to
refer to all varieties of old German handwriting, although this specific
script was only taught in all German schools from 1935 to 1941.

Ferdinand Röder became a master shoemaker in 1926 and married. I
met him through his sister Gusti via mail; but at the time, he was too
frail to write.
To become a master shoemaker, he took an exam and became an
apprentice. After seven years he became a journeyman, took another
examination and became a master, which is the level required to
teach an apprentice.3

Paul Hofmann (Bio)
Paul Hofmann (1900 - 1968)
Born March 6, 1900 and died Sept 13, 1968. Married in Bad Neustadt.
Children with Gusti Röder were Kurt and Ferdinand Hofmann. Height was
5'10".
Paul had siblings. His brother Max (born 1906) owned a laundry. His
sister Frieda was born in 1897 and his sister Else was born 1895-96 and
died in mid-fifties.
Paul Hofmann was a German soldier who trained for submarine duty in
World War One but saw no action, as he was only 18. After service, he
either owned or leased a Bierstubba, restaurant associated with a
brewery. Although it served fine food, the establishment failed by the
1920’s. Paul then stayed unemployed until 1930, when he began to work
for restaurants, essentially as an unpaid apprentice. He eventually rose
through the ranks and at the age 34-35 began to work in the great hotels
of Germany. Eventually he became a Chef and supervised several other
chefs. By 1938 he was working on the Isle of Norderney (North Sea) and
in the Winter in Oberwisenthal, Erzebirge in Saxonia as well as in other
towns, but developed back troubles which put him in a hospital until
August, 1939.
World War Two brought Paul back into military service in September, 1939
as a marine in a mine sweeper in the North Sea, serving from 1939 to
1945, and rising to the rank of Maat or sergeant. On May 8, 1945 he was
captured by British troops in Kiel; however, he was let go right away and
then made his way home, which he reached by the end of May. Because
the trains were out, he had to walk most of the way, though he was able to
grab a few trains for short rides.
129
130. Photo Album German Relatives of Larry Roeder
By September, 1945, the entire family was reunited, all in good
health, with no casualties. Of course, he had to begin to earn money,

Quittenbaum Connection
While in Hamburg in 2010, I was given a document dated 1881 by my relatives.
I’m not certain as to the connection between the people on this sheet and the
Roeder line; but I offer the photos for the use of future family historians.
The document takes us back to Johann Quittenbaum in 1772.

Chapter on the Bauer Family
Michael Bauer and Dorthea Barbara Hubner
Michael Bauer and Dorthea Barbara Hubner of Alsleben had as a child Johannes
George Bauer and were the earliest Bauers I know of; so this is a research project, to
move backward in time in that line.
Johannes George Bauer (Feb 3, 1770 - ?) and Anna Maria Zirkelbach
Johannes George Bauer (Known as George) was my great, great, great
Grandfather. He was born in Alsleben an der Salle as a peasant on Feb 3, 1770,
worked as a farmer and married Anna Maria Zirkelbach of Herschfeld on August 29,
1797. (Where is Herschfeld? Is it part of Bad Neustadt?)
Anna Maria Bauer and Franz Röder
Anna Maria Bauer was born October 10, 1803 in Neuhaus and married Franz
Röder. “To 10.10.1803 at 13:00 o'clock in NeuHaus was born Anna Maria
Roeder, Daughter of George Baur and of his wife. Anna Maria, born. Zirkelbach,
from Hershfeld. Godmother was Anna Maria, daughter of Anton Foerst,
inhabitant in Herschfeld.8 Neustadt, today Bad Naustadt an der Saale
(Postleitzahl 97616), Neuhaus (PLZ 97616) and Salz (PLZ 97616) are in north
Bavaria, because of the border of our diocese to the Catholic Nachbardioezesen
of Fulda and Erfurt. I don’t know what an Nachbardioezesen; but I assume it is a
form of Catholic district. The word doesn’t translate.
