The document discusses sins that cripple the church. It lists several sins mentioned in scripture passages: absenteeism, indifference, worldliness, unfaithfulness, selfishness, neglect, compromise, contention, ignorance, and apathy. These sins keep the church from being as effective as it could be in accomplishing its mission and spreading the gospel. By separating themselves from sinful influences and overcoming these sins, churches can grow in unity and holiness.
2. Ephesians 4:11-16 And He Himself gave some to be
apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and
some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of
the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of
the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of
the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to
a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be
children, tossed to and fro and carried about with
every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the
cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but,
speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things
into Him who is the head--Christ-- 16 from whom the
whole body, joined and knit together by what every
joint supplies, according to the effective working by
which every part does its share, causes growth of
the body for the edifying of itself in love.
3. SIN
A. GOD WANTS US TO BE HOLY AND WITHOUT SIN - 1
Peter 1:13-19 Therefore gird up the loins of your
mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the
grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation
of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not
conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in
your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy,
you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is
written, "Be holy, for I am holy." 17 And if you call on
the Father, who without partiality judges according
to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout
the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that
you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like
silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received
by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot.
4. SIN
B. SIN IN THE CHURCH SPREADS TO OTHERS -
Galatians 5:7-9 You ran well. Who hindered you from
obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion does not come
from Him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the
whole lump.
C. WE MUST SEPARATE OURSELVES FROM SINFUL
INFLUENCES - 1 Corinthians 5:4-7 In the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered
together, along with my spirit, with the power of our
Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for
the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be
saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying
is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven
leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the
old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you
truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our
Passover, was sacrificed for us.
5. SIN
D.Sin cripples the church and keeps it from
being as effective as it could be.
E. Crippled, handicapped, dis-advantaged.
F. Some handicapped people do amazing
things but there are still some things they
can’t do.
G.Some churches accomplish great things
in spite of being crippled by sin. But there
are things they cannot do because of their
dis-advantage.
6. ABSENTEEISM
Hebrews 10:23-27 Let us hold fast the
confession of our hope without wavering, for
He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us
consider one another in order to stir up love
and good works, 25 NOT FORSAKING THE
ASSEMBLING OF OURSELVES TOGETHER, as
is the manner of some, but exhorting one
another, and so much the more as you see the
Day approaching. 26 For if we sin willfully after
we have received the knowledge of the truth,
there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment,
and fiery indignation which will devour the
adversaries.
7. INDIFFERENCE
Revelation 3:14-18 "And to the angel of the church
of the Laodiceans write, 'These things says the
Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning
of the creation of God: 15 I know your works, that you
ARE NEITHER COLD NOR HOT. I could wish you
were cold or hot. 16 So then, BECAUSE YOU ARE
LUKEWARM, AND NEITHER COLD NOR HOT, I WILL
VOMIT YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH. 17 Because you say,
'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of
nothing'--and do not know that you are wretched,
miserable, poor, blind, and naked-- 18 I counsel you
to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may
be rich; and white garments, that you may be
clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not
be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve,
that you may see.
8. WORLDLINESS
1 John 2:15-17 DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD
OR THE THINGS IN THE WORLD. If anyone
loves the world, the love of the Father is not
in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust
of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the
pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the
world. 17 And the world is passing away, and
the lust of it; but he who does the will of God
abides forever.
9. UNFAITHFULNESS
Revelation 2:4-7 Nevertheless I have this
against you, that YOU HAVE LEFT YOUR FIRST
LOVE. 5 Remember therefore from where you
have fallen; repent and do the first works, or
else I will come to you quickly and remove your
lampstand from its place--unless you repent.
6 But this you have, that you hate the deeds of
the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has
an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches. To him who overcomes I will give to
eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of
the Paradise of God." ‘
10. SELFISHNESS
Philippians 2:1-4 Therefore if there is any
consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love,
if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection
and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-
minded, having the same love, being of one
accord, of one mind. 3 LET NOTHING BE
DONE THROUGH SELFISH AMBITION OR
CONCEIT, but in lowliness of mind let each
esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each
of you look out not only for his own
interests, but also for the interests of others.
11. NEGLECT
Hebrews 2:1-3 Therefore we must GIVE THE
MORE EARNEST HEED TO THE THINGS WE
HAVE HEARD, LEST WE DRIFT AWAY. 2 For
if the word spoken through angels proved
steadfast, and every transgression and
disobedience received a just reward, 3 how
shall we escape IF WE NEGLECT SO GREAT
A SALVATION, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us
by those who heard Him,
12. COMPROMISE
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Do not be UNEQUALLY YOKED
TOGETHER WITH UNBELIEVERS. For what fellowship
has righteousness with lawlessness? And what
communion has light with darkness? 15 And what
accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a
believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement
has the temple of God with idols? For you are the
temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will
dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their
God, And they shall be My people." 17 Therefore
"Come out from among them And be separate, says
the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will
receive you." 18 "I will be a Father to you, And you
shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD
Almighty.“
13. CONTENTION
1 Corinthians 1:10-13 Now I plead with you,
brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that you all speak the same thing, and that there
be no divisions among you, but that you be
perfectly joined together in the same mind and
in the same judgment. 11 For it has been
declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by
those of Chloe's household, that THERE ARE
CONTENTIONS AMONG YOU. 12 Now I say this,
that each of you says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of
Apollos," or "I am of Cephas," or "I am of
Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified
for you? Or were you baptized in the name of
Paul?
14. IGNORANCE
Acts 17:29-31 Therefore, since we are the
offspring of God, we ought not to think that
the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or
stone, something shaped by art and man's
devising. 30 Truly, these TIMES OF
IGNORANCE God overlooked, but now
commands all men everywhere to repent,
31 because He has appointed a day on which
He will judge the world in righteousness by
the Man whom He has ordained. He has
given assurance of this to all by raising Him
from the dead.”
15. APATHY
Ephesians 4:17-24 This I say, therefore, and testify in
the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest
of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 having their understanding darkened, being
alienated from the life of God, because of the
ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness
of their heart; 19 who, BEING PAST FEELING, have
given themselves over to lewdness, to work all
uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you have not so
learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and
have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct,
the old man which grows corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your
mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was
created according to God, in true righteousness and
holiness.
