Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent
most of her poverty stricken childhood in Baltimore. Lady Day, as she was named by
Lester Young, had to overcome many tragedies in her lifetime and yet still became one of the most
popular jazz–blues vocalists of all time. Billie's Parents, Sally Fagan and Clarence Holiday, were
both born in Baltimore. They married as teens and soon Sally gave birth to Eleanora Fagan. Shortly
after the birth, Clarence
Holiday deserted his family to tour with Fletcher Henderson's band. Billie saw little of her
immediate family and she essentially grew up alone, feeling unloved and gaining a lifelong
inferiority complex that led...show more content...
But even with the new marriage the marital and drug abuse continued. She was given a chance to
be in a movie with one of her early idols, Louis Armstrong in 1946. On top of the being disgusted
at the fact that she was stuck playing a maid, she was again feeling the effects of racism, but still
she could not pass up the chance to work with a great like Armstrong. Billie Holiday's story from
1950 on is a gradual down slide. She was arrested several times on drug charges and was divorced
then remarried for a third time. In 1951 she met and married Louis McKay, who similar to her other
two husbands, turned out to be abusive as well.
Although her recordings, which started up again in 1952, placed her once again with all–star jazz
musicians, her voice was slipping fast. Her unhappy relationships distracted her, the heroin use and
excessive drinking continued and by 1956 she was way past her prime. Holiday's 1958 album Lady
in Satin found the 43–year old singer sounding old and worn out and the following year she
collapsed. On the summer day of July 17,1957 Billie Holiday's problems finally caught up with
her. She died at the early age of 44. Holiday rarely sang traditional blues, but her reputation rests on
her ability to transform popular songs into emotionally profound pieces. The recordings that I
decided to listen to were on a cassette titled Billie's

My Favorite Holiday Essay
When I was younger we used to have a party with my dad's side of the family every year on
Christmas. It was always my favorite holiday because of the family time that came along with it.
That was until christmas came when I was eleven years old. There had been some family issues but
everyone thought it would get pushed aside for the sake of the party. That wasn't the case and what
went from being my favorite holiday is now something that brings anxiety and stress for my whole
family because now every get together is awkward and full of tension.
The party started like any other one with high energy from all my cousins and loud conversations
from all the adults. This Christmas fell on a Sunday and my mom had to work the next day, so as
the night dragged on and it got to be 8 o'clock and we still didn't open any presents my mom
simply asked "Could we get started on presents?" Little did we know that small statement would
lead to the biggest blow up imaginable. After she said that my uncle started screaming at mom
saying "You're in my house and if you don't like it leave now!" This led to even more yelling but
for me the whole argument seemed to go over in slow motion and everything started to play over
in my mind. It starting with how confused I was over how this got so out of hand so quickly and
how adults couldn't get along for a night for the sake of the party. The argument ended only a

speaking countries. Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Spain are a few for example. Every
country celebrates this holiday in a unique way. This holiday usually lasts for one week starting
from Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) through Easter Sunday (Pascua). During the week, there

"There are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church (in order); Baptism, Penance/Reconciliation,
Eucharist, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick" These
sacraments help build up the body of Christ, make people holy, and to give worship to God.
Baptism is the very first sacrament and the first step towards a lifelong journey of commitment and
discipleship. People usually get baptized as babies but it does not have any age limit. When babies
get baptized, the priest sprinkles holy water upon your forehead but sometimes when you're older,
you put in your whole body. "The very last sacrament is the Anointing of the Sick, administered to
bring spiritual and physical strength during an illness, especially near to the time of death."
During Semana Santa, there are many celebrations that go on. People honor their local saints, wear
unusual costumes, and throw parades. A local Spanish saint was St. Teresa of

Thanksgiving is the holiday for family gatherings. Air travel analysts have coined it the "most
traveled holiday" of the year. People may head to the mountains or the beaches at christmas but
gathering at grandma's for that coveted feast of thanks is high on the family priority list. But not all
is as blissful as the famous Norman Rockwell portrayed. Family can equal stress, lots of stress. All
that traveling makes for weary, cranky guests. Then there is the overcrowded accommodations,
unequal division of chores and the dreadful family gossip. So many aspects of this holiday can leave
one overwhelmed and contemplating the true meaning of giving thanks.
Packing for the holidays away from home can be a chore within itself. Many things need to be
taken into consideration. One needs to be informed of the weather conditions to assure proper
attire. Many times there are also children and others in the family that need assistance with this.
Also you need to consider if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. If your family plans a
black friday shopping trip you could find yourself in long lines out in the cold morning air. Perhaps
Grandma will be sending you out to fetch the christmas tree or assist in the delightful chore of
outdoor holiday house decorating. In any case, obviously a great deal of thought needs to go into the
packing process.
Next comes the dreaded chore of carrying the luggage and family to ever pleasant airport. The day
is filled with all the wonderful

The breathtaking scenery just swept me off my feet. The pavements, trees and even the vehicles
by the roadside were covered under the thick layer of snow. As I walked down the streets, the
refreshing winter breeze blew against my face. It was like a dream come true. I was in Japan, the
country I have wanted to visit all my life. That December holiday, my parents finally decided to
bring the family for a holiday in Japan.
When we arrived there, the first thing that struck me was the scenery, it was just unbelievably
beautiful. It was winter already and I clung tightly onto my winter jacket as we waited for the coach
to the ski resort. I never thought I could ever experience winter and witness such gorgeous landscape,

We then set out to the ski mountain, sadly, till then we had not seen thesnow falling. Nonetheless,
my siblings and I were still excited about the skiing experience. It was something we had wanted to
try since young.
When we first got onto our skis, we could not really balance and went sliding down the slope
involuntarily. Luckily we started at the bottom of the beginners slope thus it was not that steep. It
was another agonizing task to try standing up after falling down. It was entirely different from
how I imagined. I thought we could just stand up the way we usually do after a fall but it was 10
times harder on skis. Of course, we all learn through experience and by dawn, we were already
skiing down at a speed we never thought we could achieve. To have conquered, the beginners'
mountain without lessons within a day was an achievement that we were all proud of.
As the days ends earlier in Japan, it was dark by the time it was 5pm. We had no choice but to stop
for the day. We went back to our Japanese stylehotel rooms which had individual "onsens" which
means hot springs in Japanese. As we walked down the street for dinner, there were brightly lit
Christmas decorations as well as the little snowmans built by passers–by.
Then, a snowflake fell. It was finally snowing! I jumped up in excitement and started hopping around
in joy. The sight was indescribable.

Holiday Spending Hangover Essay
The holiday season was designed to bring joy and excitement to the masses after a busy year of
trial and tribulations. While for many people it does just that, there is still many others who end up
creating debt problems related to the holidays. These debt problems not only put a damper on the
season to be jolly, but they also make the subsequent months and years more difficult to handle
financially.
The Holiday Spirit
For better or worse, the holiday spirit drives people to what could be considered excessive
generosity. People love to give gifts and host parties during the holidays as a means of bringing
family and friends together to perhaps make up for lost time during the year. The stores are all

However, it doesn't stop most people from trying. The most common way people deal with any
monetary restriction is to pull out the plastic and let the credit card companies temporarily foot the
bill. In the short term, it feels good to be generous and show caring to others. It feels good all the
way up to the point the credit card bills start coming in the door. It's then that the "holiday spending
hangover" sets in and people start to see and feel the error of their ways.
Dealing With the Holiday Hangover
When you drink too much alcohol, you wake up the next day with a hangover. There isn't much
you can do about it except drink some water, take a couple of pain killers and work you way
through it. A holiday spending hangover is much the same thing. You feel bad, but there isn't much
left to do except start figuring out how to pay the associated bills. Depending on how far overboard
you go, there will be some amount of financial pain for you to endure.

As far has holidays go, the Navy likes to celebrate them early to gather everyone together before
we each take leave (vacation time). They were throwing a holiday party in early December. I'm

My Winter Holiday Essay
Like last winter holiday, I did a part–time job for a month in order to experience social life and earn
some extra money. After seven days when I stayed at home, I went to a local supermarket and
found a job which to promote the products. It was good for me because I just had to spend 6 hours
per day to work outside. Nevertheless the biggest shortcoming is that during the work time I had
no time to play with my friends and relatives. Thus, I didn't do anything fun until Feb.20. At the
end of the holiday, I went to see a midnight movie and ate BBQ with my friend. I did feel happy
when I could have fun with old friends and spend time earning some money. All in all, I enjoyed my

My Favorite Holiday Is Christmas Essay
I don't know about you, but my favorite holiday is Christmas; there's nothing better than waking up
on Christmas morning to see what presents your parents had gotten you. This was my favorite part
of Christmas and if you asked other kids they would say the same thing. Christmas was a time for
opening gifts and enjoying time with family. Luckily for me, I went to my grandma 's on my
mother's side. One year we go to my mother 's side and the following year we go to my father 's

holiday; spending time with your family, friends, and remembering Jesus Christ are important too.
On the morning of December 25th, 2010, I was a twelve–year old boy. Waking up on Christmas
morning was something I had been looking forward to for a few weeks. I was beyond excited to
see what presents I had gotten from my parents. There was nothing better than getting to see what
new toys I would have to play with. I woke up around 7 A.M. and ran into my parent's room to
wake them up so we could open our presents; while I was jumping for joy, they were half awake
and trying to get out of bed before I pulled them out myself. After they finally got out of bed we
went into the living room. This is where we have always opened presents on Christmas Day. In my
family, it has always been a tradition to open all of our gifts on Christmas morning. I sat on the

The 7–day stay in Zermatt, Switzerland was my favorite trip to date. The crisp, chilly air. The

The celebration of Christmas is a special moment itself.
I enjoy the process of preparing for the holiday very much. Our whole family participates in the
process. For many years I am responsible for the decoration of the house. I like putting the
Christmas toys on the tree and lighting the candles. Also I go outside the house and see what can be
decorated there.
Especially I like when it snows outside. The snow is a symbol of the Christmas; to me it is also a
symbol of the renewal and cleanliness of the upcoming event. In addition the streets are simply
decorated already when it is snowing outside. In conclusion I would like to summarize the factors
that make Christmas a particularly interesting and great holiday.
First of all, I enjoy the unique atmosphere of the holiday. The feeling that is present in the air at
those days cannot be compared to anything else. The feeling of Holy joy and happiness arises every
living thing to do good and kind things. The second thing that attracts me the most about the holiday
is that during these days every person somehow goes back to the childhood. The presents under the
Christmas tree along with congratulations from everyone in the street allows the person to feel
himself young and full of strength, like in the days of youth when everything was possible and no
worries could frighten him. The last but not least thing about

their own option way to choose. in what kind holiday they will take. And why it has actually

Unusual Holiday Essay
Unusual Holidays Celebrated Around the Country "Halloween is the beginning of the holiday
shopping season. That's for women. The beginning of the holiday shopping season for men is
Christmas Eve." The day where we are encouraged to spend time with other people...Independence
Day. These are holidays everyone is familiar with. But what about some more unusual holidays? The
first holiday I'm going to talk about, I'm almost positive was introduced by my 5th grade English
teacher. It's the holiday that no student ever celebrates. The holiday that lets grammar nerds and
language bullies unite. Punctuation Day– September 24th. This holiday is described as "a celebration
of the lowly comma, correctly used quotation marks, and other proper uses of periods, semicolons,
and the ever–mysterious ellipsis." This holiday was created by a man named Jeff Rubin, who is a
professional speaker. Next, is National Weatherperson's Day–February 5th. Now this day marks the
birth of John Jeffries in 1774, who was one of the first weather observers. It's celebrated mainly in
the United States. Imagine how hard predicting the weather was back in 1774; and you thought
our meteorologists, today struggled. Makes me wonder if they even predicted the right day to
celebrate this holiday. Can anyone guess what the next holiday is? Here's a hint. This holiday
comes after New Year's Eve and is on January 1st. Nope, it's not New Year's Day. It's the night after
one of the biggest drinking nights

  • 1. Billie Holiday Essay examples Billie Holiday Billie Holiday was born Eleanora Fagan on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent most of her poverty stricken childhood in Baltimore. Lady Day, as she was named by Lester Young, had to overcome many tragedies in her lifetime and yet still became one of the most popular jazz–blues vocalists of all time. Billie's Parents, Sally Fagan and Clarence Holiday, were both born in Baltimore. They married as teens and soon Sally gave birth to Eleanora Fagan. Shortly after the birth, Clarence Holiday deserted his family to tour with Fletcher Henderson's band. Billie saw little of her immediate family and she essentially grew up alone, feeling unloved and gaining a lifelong inferiority complex that led...show more content... But even with the new marriage the marital and drug abuse continued. She was given a chance to be in a movie with one of her early idols, Louis Armstrong in 1946. On top of the being disgusted at the fact that she was stuck playing a maid, she was again feeling the effects of racism, but still she could not pass up the chance to work with a great like Armstrong. Billie Holiday's story from 1950 on is a gradual down slide. She was arrested several times on drug charges and was divorced then remarried for a third time. In 1951 she met and married Louis McKay, who similar to her other two husbands, turned out to be abusive as well. Although her recordings, which started up again in 1952, placed her once again with all–star jazz musicians, her voice was slipping fast. Her unhappy relationships distracted her, the heroin use and excessive drinking continued and by 1956 she was way past her prime. Holiday's 1958 album Lady in Satin found the 43–year old singer sounding old and worn out and the following year she collapsed. On the summer day of July 17,1957 Billie Holiday's problems finally caught up with her. She died at the early age of 44. Holiday rarely sang traditional blues, but her reputation rests on her ability to transform popular songs into emotionally profound pieces. The recordings that I decided to listen to were on a cassette titled Billie's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Favorite Holiday Essay When I was younger we used to have a party with my dad's side of the family every year on Christmas. It was always my favorite holiday because of the family time that came along with it. That was until christmas came when I was eleven years old. There had been some family issues but everyone thought it would get pushed aside for the sake of the party. That wasn't the case and what went from being my favorite holiday is now something that brings anxiety and stress for my whole family because now every get together is awkward and full of tension. The party started like any other one with high energy from all my cousins and loud conversations from all the adults. This Christmas fell on a Sunday and my mom had to work the next day, so as the night dragged on and it got to be 8 o'clock and we still didn't open any presents my mom simply asked "Could we get started on presents?" Little did we know that small statement would lead to the biggest blow up imaginable. After she said that my uncle started screaming at mom saying "You're in my house and if you don't like it leave now!" This led to even more yelling but for me the whole argument seemed to go over in slow motion and everything started to play over in my mind. It starting with how confused I was over how this got so out of hand so quickly and how adults couldn't get along for a night for the sake of the party. The argument ended only a couple minutes later with my older sisters and I crying and my aunt coming over to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Spain are a few for example. Every country celebrates this holiday in a unique way. This holiday usually lasts for one week starting from Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) through Easter Sunday (Pascua). During the week, there are daily mass services in the Catholic Church. The seven main days are: Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. Moses and Apostle Paul were the two main contributors in writing the bible. "There are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church (in order); Baptism, Penance/Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick" These sacraments help build up the body of Christ, make people holy, and to give worship to God. Baptism is the very first sacrament and the first step towards a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. People usually get baptized as babies but it does not have any age limit. When babies get baptized, the priest sprinkles holy water upon your forehead but sometimes when you're older, you put in your whole body. "The very last sacrament is the Anointing of the Sick, administered to bring spiritual and physical strength during an illness, especially near to the time of death." • 5. Persuasive Essay Holidays Thanksgiving is the holiday for family gatherings. Air travel analysts have coined it the "most traveled holiday" of the year. People may head to the mountains or the beaches at christmas but gathering at grandma's for that coveted feast of thanks is high on the family priority list. But not all is as blissful as the famous Norman Rockwell portrayed. Family can equal stress, lots of stress. All that traveling makes for weary, cranky guests. Then there is the overcrowded accommodations, unequal division of chores and the dreadful family gossip. So many aspects of this holiday can leave one overwhelmed and contemplating the true meaning of giving thanks. Packing for the holidays away from home can be a chore within itself. Many things need to be taken into consideration. One needs to be informed of the weather conditions to assure proper attire. Many times there are also children and others in the family that need assistance with this. Also you need to consider if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. If your family plans a black friday shopping trip you could find yourself in long lines out in the cold morning air. Perhaps Grandma will be sending you out to fetch the christmas tree or assist in the delightful chore of outdoor holiday house decorating. In any case, obviously a great deal of thought needs to go into the packing process. Next comes the dreaded chore of carrying the luggage and family to ever pleasant airport. The day is filled with all the wonderful Get more content on HelpWriting.net

As I walked down the streets, the refreshing winter breeze blew against my face. It was like a dream come true. I was in Japan, the country I have wanted to visit all my life. That December holiday, my parents finally decided to bring the family for a holiday in Japan. When we arrived there, the first thing that struck me was the scenery, it was just unbelievably beautiful. It was winter already and I clung tightly onto my winter jacket as we waited for the coach to the ski resort. I never thought I could ever experience winter and witness such gorgeous landscape, that I could only once...show more content... We then set out to the ski mountain, sadly, till then we had not seen thesnow falling. Nonetheless, my siblings and I were still excited about the skiing experience. It was something we had wanted to try since young. When we first got onto our skis, we could not really balance and went sliding down the slope involuntarily. Luckily we started at the bottom of the beginners slope thus it was not that steep. It was another agonizing task to try standing up after falling down. It was entirely different from how I imagined. I thought we could just stand up the way we usually do after a fall but it was 10 times harder on skis. Of course, we all learn through experience and by dawn, we were already skiing down at a speed we never thought we could achieve. To have conquered, the beginners' mountain without lessons within a day was an achievement that we were all proud of. As the days ends earlier in Japan, it was dark by the time it was 5pm. We had no choice but to stop for the day. We went back to our Japanese stylehotel rooms which had individual "onsens" which means hot springs in Japanese. As we walked down the street for dinner, there were brightly lit Christmas decorations as well as the little snowmans built by passers–by. Then, a snowflake fell. It was finally snowing! I jumped up in excitement and started hopping around in joy. The sight was indescribable. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Holiday Spending Hangover Essay The holiday season was designed to bring joy and excitement to the masses after a busy year of trial and tribulations. While for many people it does just that, there is still many others who end up creating debt problems related to the holidays. These debt problems not only put a damper on the season to be jolly, but they also make the subsequent months and years more difficult to handle financially. The Holiday Spirit For better or worse, the holiday spirit drives people to what could be considered excessive generosity. People love to give gifts and host parties during the holidays as a means of bringing family and friends together to perhaps make up for lost time during the year. The stores are all dressed up in its holidays best, the holiday music is playing, and a festive atmosphere seems to permeate everything going on in the country. The most common way people deal with any monetary restriction is to pull out the plastic and let the credit card companies temporarily foot the bill. In the short term, it feels good to be generous and show caring to others. It feels good all the way up to the point the credit card bills start coming in the door. It's then that the "holiday spending hangover" sets in and people start to see and feel the error of their ways. Dealing With the Holiday Hangover When you drink too much alcohol, you wake up the next day with a hangover. There isn't much you can do about it except drink some water, take a couple of pain killers and work you way through it. A holiday spending hangover is much the same thing. You feel bad, but there isn't much left to do except start figuring out how to pay the associated bills. Depending on how far overboard you go, there will be some amount of financial pain for you to endure. Avoiding the Holiday Spending Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. American Holidays HOLIDAYS AND CUSTOMS American Holidays People in every culture celebrate holidays. Although the word "holiday" literally means "holy day," most American holidays are not religious, but commemorative in nature and origin. Because the nation is blessed with rich ethnic heritage it is possible to trace some of the American holidays to diverse cultural sources and traditions, but all holidays have taken on a distinctively American flavor. • 10. Descriptive Essay About A Holiday As far has holidays go, the Navy likes to celebrate them early to gather everyone together before we each take leave (vacation time). They were throwing a holiday party in early December. I'm new. I want to meet more people. I want to win a prize. So, I buy tickets. Me and a few of my friends are going to go if for no other reason than to maybe win a new xBox. The party itself was fun. We got to see everyone outside of their uniform which may surprise you. I, on the other hand, was less focused on people and more on extending these festivities. One of my friends that I work with invites me to a house party. I walk in the house. There's music being played off someone's iPhone, an indoor and outdoor beer pong table, shot glasses sticky with the aftermath of drunk toast with strangers, and a shit ton of people. I find my friend, ECK, and he hugs me with a beer pong ball in his hand. "There's someone I want to introduce you to." He guides me towards the couch. "This is Kyle," he points. I take one look at Kyle and turn into a puddle of mush. He gets up to shake my hand, but I just hug him instead. What can I say...I'm a hugger. We both nervously laugh and I force myself to walk away. People approach me to say hello and catch up on work, but something about our innocent conversations and actually seeing him has me peering over people to see what he's doing. • 11. My Winter Holiday Essay Like last winter holiday, I did a part–time job for a month in order to experience social life and earn some extra money. After seven days when I stayed at home, I went to a local supermarket and found a job which to promote the products. It was good for me because I just had to spend 6 hours per day to work outside. Nevertheless the biggest shortcoming is that during the work time I had no time to play with my friends and relatives. Thus, I didn't do anything fun until Feb.20. At the end of the holiday, I went to see a midnight movie and ate BBQ with my friend. I did feel happy when I could have fun with old friends and spend time earning some money. All in all, I enjoyed my winter holiday! Warm–up #2 If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? If I can go to any place in the world, I want to go to Finland most. The idea comes from a variety show. It shows me a beautiful Finland. Snow gleams white there, like a kingdom that is covered by snow. • 13. My Favorite Holiday Is Christmas Essay I don't know about you, but my favorite holiday is Christmas; there's nothing better than waking up on Christmas morning to see what presents your parents had gotten you. This was my favorite part of Christmas and if you asked other kids they would say the same thing. Christmas was a time for opening gifts and enjoying time with family. Luckily for me, I went to my grandma 's on my mother's side. One year we go to my mother 's side and the following year we go to my father 's side. Even though I love getting presents on Christmas, it is not the only great thing about the holiday; spending time with your family, friends, and remembering Jesus Christ are important too. On the morning of December 25th, 2010, I was a twelve–year old boy. Waking up on Christmas morning was something I had been looking forward to for a few weeks. I was beyond excited to see what presents I had gotten from my parents. There was nothing better than getting to see what new toys I would have to play with. I woke up around 7 A.M. and ran into my parent's room to wake them up so we could open our presents; while I was jumping for joy, they were half awake and trying to get out of bed before I pulled them out myself. After they finally got out of bed we went into the living room. This is where we have always opened presents on Christmas Day. In my family, it has always been a tradition to open all of our gifts on Christmas morning. I sat on the couch with my mom, my two dogs with us, and my dad sat in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

These are holidays everyone is familiar with. But what about some more unusual holidays? The first holiday I'm going to talk about, I'm almost positive was introduced by my 5th grade English teacher.
