Protons <ul><li>Positive charge </li></ul><ul><li>Found in the nucleus </li></ul><ul><li>Mass of 1 AMU (atomic mass unit) </li></ul><ul><li>The number of protons in an atom is equal to the atomic number of that element. This is always true. So an atom of oxygen always has 8 protons, no matter what else about that atom is different. An atom with 11 protons is always sodium. ALWAYS. </li></ul>

They have the same number of protons, the same charge, but have a specific atomic mass. </li></ul><ul><li>Isotopes can be identified with 2 different notations </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Hyphen notation: Carbon - 14 </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Nuclear symbol notation: 14 6 C (hard to type!) </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>To find the number of neutrons in an isotope, subtract the number of protons (atomic number) from the atomic mass. </li></ul>
